You have to remember that many burners are very picky about media. Therefore what works well for one person doesn't work for others. Consider the good old Memorex blanks. 90% of the members on here know they are junk but the other 10% think they are great and keep burning them. I have burned over 300 Ritek GO4 in the last year and now switched to GO5 blanks. Not one defective blank or bad burn and they play in every player they go into. TY's are excellent but almost twice the price. Why would I pay extra for them when my Pioneer burner loves the Ritek blanks. I had one member on here say Ritek were junk. So everyone has a different outlook on their blanks. I always say once you find a winning combination of burner, blanks and software, don't change. If it works for you and plays well thats all you can ask for. Quality lists are sometimes misleading because some companies PAY to get their product rated high and placed at top end.

I had a Sony DVD-RW that I was using for testing different software. It burned 5 times then died. Same problem with a few CD-RW's by Sony. I'm not sure if their write once blanks are any better but the RW's don't have my vote.

I am using Verbatim and Sony DVD-R right now, and i can vouche for the quality of the Sonys, excellent. Not a problem yet. As for the RW, i did have problems after a couple of burns with those, but i hardly use RW anymore so hopefully they have improved.

>>>> have burned over 300 Ritek GO4 in the last year and now switched to GO5 blanks. Not one defective blank or bad burn and they play in every player they go into.<<<<

I have also burned hundreds of Riteks, but I no longer purchase them. The quality of SOME of their media has taken a nose-dive. They made some changes, for the worst, just at the time they were introducing the GO5 discs. Just as a few people began to experience problems, this article appeared, which is an interview with Tim Smith, Sales and Marketing Manager for Ridisc. In it, he acknowledges that Ritek had done some (bad) things which forced Ridisc to try to make some changes.

Note this snippet from the article:

"Question: Tell us why the Original Ridisc GO5 was discontinued so quickly?"

"Answer: The original success of the Ritek dye (proliferated by the success of RiDisc) wasn't unnoticed by competitors, and other brands started to jump on the bandwagon. Very soon Ritek DVD of every grade possibly was flooding into the market. Media of B quality, C quality, and even worse, was all being sold as Grade A Ritek media and very soon, customers began to lose faith in the dye and the brands that carried the codes G04 and G05.

"It didn't help that even Ritek themselves knowingly sold discs of lesser quality (even with their own brands) into the market to customers that didnt care about quality just as long as they made money. Even Ritek's European Branch office, Conrexx Technology BVBA, was held responsible for introducing the notorious 'Down Grade' disc into Europe.

"In an email to our DVD Recordable's guru Flash, Ritek Taiwan remarked:
'We have same feeling that this should be a dumped DVD-R material, should be scrapped and would have no possibility to re-ship to market.'

"As a result, the customers who had once trusted the codes G04/G05 began to look elsewhere for an alternative, as they no longer had faith in the Ritek dye. In a sense, Ritek and RiDisc became victims of their own success."

=== End of Snippet ===

It is important to read the entire article, to fully understand the issues that were involved and the context. Here is a direct line to the article, published originally at CDR.info.com, from Feb. of 2005:

You can have a bad batch of any product with any name. Until I personally hit some of those bad ones I will still use Ritek. My latest bundle of GO5's are about 2 weeks old. Still as good as ever. There were some fake/bad TY's out there also. That doesn't make them all bad. Like I said before the choice is yours.
