I use Sharpie too. Fine tip. A different color depending on the source of the movie.

josephga,
If the labels you are useing are inkjet printable stick on labels then they will most likely cause you problems down the road. I tried the neato labeling system in the past prior to useing printable media and the stick on labels caused playback problems over time. I recommend printable media or a sharpie.

I think the stick on label problem is due to the label throwing off the weight, balance, and thickness of the disk, along with the label/adhesive coming off over time among other things. Kinda like the wheel weights on vehicle tires. Just a theory, not a real educated theory though.. Feel free to correct me if i am wrong.. I wont get offended.
I have spent the last 10 years working as a technician in a major semiconductor wafer manufacturing plant, where i work in the lithography department. We use silicon disks and spin on photo resist to make computer chips. Our spin speeds are probably higher than what a DVD spins at. Just my 2 cents.. I always use a SHARPIE fine point, and I like the black color best. I too have been putting codes on my backups letting me know what program I used to back up the disk.
Happy Burning to everyone!! :)

http://www.cdcovers.cc I use an Epson R300
main media is maxell as it can print closer to the hub (12% more print area). Use EPSON print CD sofware that came with printer and occasional editing using Adobe.

Everyone keep saying that the paper CD/DVD labels will cause "problems down the road". I've noticed that some of my DVD copies are now having playback/pixellation problems that they didn't have originally. Could this be one of the "problems down the road"? What about hub labels? Also, I'm curious about those Avery DVD labels that aren't paper. Anyone have any input?

The Neato system is an inkjet system that prints on paper labels that get stuck onto the disk if I'm not mistaken. If so, they are NOT ok. Paper labels that are stuck onto the disk may play ok at first, but after a period of time, for some reason, they stop working properly. By inkjet system, the poster meant to print by inkjet directly onto inkjet printable disks. IMHO, this is the best way to go. I've done over 450 disks this way and they work great.

@fincab
The playback pix problem you talked about is probably due to the dye breaking down in the media used, if it is an inferior brand of media, and assuming nothing abusive happened to the disc to cause this. Usually if you burn too fast, you will see the problem on playback right away. Something that was fine before, but now freezes, or pixes... usually bad media. You could also try a lens cleaner on your DVD player, just in case the lens is dirty. The going recommendation around here is best media: Verbs, Tys,, and other favorites. As you can see from my sig line, CMC is one of the worst media you can buy.

Max Burn:
When you say the dye breaks down in the media, do you mean that the dye used on the label can destroy the media? or is there some dye used in manufacturing the media?

no, he meant the dye in the media itself. labels are another story, and no recommended. the dye is said media (memorex) will break down in time, sometimes quickly. dye in better quality media, such as verbatim or taiyo yuden, does/will not. best buy has fuji 50 packs on sale this week and also verbatims. going for under 20 bucks.

I had problems playing my backups until I realized it was my stick-on labels. Nothing but sharpies for me, I like dark blue; they show up well.

Sharpie comments were funnier than hell...LOL!!!
Anyways...I use a disc labeler...I get about 100 labels for every dvd that I have burned. So it last awhile. I never had any problems with my sticker labels playing in any of my DVD players.
I used a Sharpie before, but since my handwriting is atrocious to begin with, I decided that I would just use a labeling machine.
:P

Yeah...you know me...never left, but do lurk around, so you'll never know when I'll pop up. ;)
Been seeing some familiar names and faces starting to make the rounds here on aD more and more, congrats.
And at the comments...they still make me laugh...I still got PLENTY of jokes to throw back...and I STILL use Memorex! LMAO!!!
Anywho...just a side note, was thinking of getting a dual layered w/light scribe, but don't think it is worth the money. Printed on labels and non handwriting ability are kinda stale for me, so figured I would try another option. If anyone has any suggestions, that would be good. Just PM me with any links or what have you.
