you guys need to get over your sharpie buzz. go get a r200 for 70 bucks. best money you can spend. i use TY hub printables and find the dvd label online. these things look amazing after you make a few. I even use some krylon spray to protect against smudges and water. it even adds a little gloss. anyone who still uses sharpies needs to think about this.

Why spend the $$ on a printer and ink? My backups are for personal use only {I'm no pirate} and all I need is a way to distinguish between my discs ...

Because I'd rather spend my dinero on discs and cats, Mort. After all, I AM a catfreak and the only Epson printer I ever had (years and years ago) was a POS

I really like my R200. Not only for printing on media but also for photos and as a general all purpose printer. You want to talk about a POS, I had a lexmark X73 and it was pure junk. One cartridge (it had one black and one color cartridge) cost more than the whole set for my R200 (6 cartridges total). It took 3 times longer to print and the print quality sucked.

I agree with you Mort81. Got an X73 basically for free and gave it to my son. Didn't work worth a damn and to this day, I can't get that POS completely cleared out of his computer. some part of the installation software just won't delete.

Whoa, whoa. You can NOT print on THERMAL printable DVDs with an ink jet. Trust me. I ordered 100 of the silver (supposedly ink jet printable) DVDs from an unnamed location, and got the thermals instead. Since I was lazy, I just decided to keep them and try it. Well, you can print on them, but it rubs off immediately. It won't dry, and does not work.
Ref. stick-on labels vs printing. I have done some fairly extensive tests on the stick-on labels and the problems they cause. No matter what system you use - and I've used many of the label systems that supposedly center it for you, etc - they will eventually cause problems. I'm still not sure if it is heat causing problems with the glue, but I can tell you it is not a PERMANENT problem. If you remove the label, and all the glue (i.e. use Goo-be-gone or some such) your DVD will work correctly again. You can even do before and after bit error testing. before the label goes on, BER is low, after it is on, it often jumps up markedly, and then once removed it is low again. Perhaps it affects the reflectivity of the DVD...hmm.
