I would say that Sefy wins the argument if only based solely on the fact that he is able to spell and type coherently. And ripping is not the "whole" process. The whole process could be anything. It could be conversion to VCD, SVCD, DVD, Divx, Xvid, DVD-R, etc. all of which take varying amounts of time.

POO!

TEN years? I built my first system about 27 years ago, before Microsoft,Dell and most other computer giants! It was a Z80.My first pc with a hard drive was a Motorola with 8" floppy and 5 meg hard drive. My first cd rom drive was $1000.This was a 1x read only drive.I installed over 200 systems in the past 2 years.
As far as your guides, that may have been uncalled for,as I never read any of your "guides".
Dirty, just what is wrong with my spelling?
Ripping a CSS encoded DVD,is the writing and De-CSS ing to have a workable file,on your hard drive! As for the ripping vs. reading thing,Pioneer lists the 05s ripping at 2x,it rates its reading single layer media at 12x and two layer at 8x.So you see at least Pioneer agrees that reading is not the same as ripping! But those guys are just quacks, right? As I said before, after you get rid of CSS,or it is not css encoded, you can "copy" at a higher speed. Most people ARE ripping retail videos.
One last thing Sefy,I can provide proof I worked as a programmer for Quarterdeck up until they sold out,a total of 4 years.I can also prove my claims of the systems installed.
I was going to just let this crap die,but it seems you don't want that.I was inclined to say it was just a matter of symantics, your definition of ripping is not the same as mine,or several software companies such as Ahead!

"May" have been uncalled for ? atleast I got more manners then you do, so not only you accused me of theft, you didn't even bother checking what it is you are accusing me of!

As for my experience, I can also prove it, but I doubt it will help you, since I'm from Israel and not from the US, so you propably didn't hear of any place I worked with, so skip the show off section ok ?

As for Ripping a DVD, you want me to post pictures of it ? will that make you see how wrong you are ? or you don't believe what your eyes show you, oh wait, you'll propably blame me for altering the pictures, silly me!

I would like to see this Pioneer "ripping" as you say, cause as far as I recall, it's illegal, and I find it hard to believe a company will officialy declare ripping as part of it's status on it's drives.

PS: I've got a Pioneer 106S drive, i'm not talking about the DVD-RW drives, i'm talking about regular DVD-ROM drives.

Oh yeah, and i'm sure Ahead developes DVD Ripping solutions, right ? and they also use the same ripping programs everyone else use, which are basicly illegal, cause last I recall, ripping a DVD is not something a company will be proud of, but hey, that's just me thinking like that.

no one was arguing about the difference between ripping and reading. perhaps some of the words were interchanged, but everyone knew we were referring to ripping. you just came in and wanted to be all clever and show everyone that there was a little technicality and look at how smart you are. no one cares. i suggest a mod shut this thread down simply because it has degenerated into an I'm better than you fest.

And jeepers, i should have said your punctuation/typing skills. For someone who invented computers you don't have the best command of the keyboard.

Dirty,I agree this has gone on to long.As for my punctuation,I typed this after working 10 hours. If you read more posts, you will see I am not as bad as a good percentage of posters. This is not a legal letter,I don't worry that much about spelling or punctuation.
Sefy, lets just let it drop! You and I are both too hard headed.I was about to post a link to the Pioneer stats I refered to,but I agree it is time to drop this.I am much too busy to go on with this.Good luck with your guides.
Dirty,I just wanted to say,I know my skills as a typist are not the best. When I attended high school,in the 60s,we didn't have computers, and typing was offered to girls only!Seems kind of sexist now, doesn't it?

@jeepers94, The only quarel I had with you is regarding the insult of me for stealing someone elses guides, and the disgusting remark of "crap for brains" which was out of line.

I can have debates and arguments, but I stay professional also in behaviour, but those who don't give respect, don't deserve it, and you made a personal attack at me for absolutly no just reason.

I did apologize for that.Like I said I never read your guides.I do know the few guides I glanced at were just the same guide with very few literary changes. It is clear to me,MOST guides are pretty much copies of others, with the so-called author taking credit for someone elses work. That is the main reason I do not read guides by people I do not know! I know I helped develope a well known piece of software. It has been around for almost ten years, with few changes. My name is no longer on the product, others have taken credit, and that burns me up everytime I see it on the shelves. If you can say,you did not "copy",or is it "rip"off another author,I will check out your guides.Again I am sorry if I mislabled you!

I've never copied anyone elses guide, and you can see it immediatly by how my guide is designed. I understand how you feel by seeing someone else copying your stuff and removing your name, there was a company that took one of my old guides without permission and sold it! I was furiated when I saw that.

Anyway, you check my guides, and tell me your honest opinion, if you saw any other guide like it (which doesn't have my name on it) anywhere on the net that is even half similar to mine, do note, my guide is hosted on 8 places, here is main link:

http://www.sefy.dtdns.net

The only difference in all the links you will see, is how fast the host updates to the latest revision.

Are you guys having fun or what?!

I think the solution to the problem has been suggested: get a second DVD Rom drive for reading ($40) and use the burner only for burning. That's what I did and it works fine.
(I have a DRU500A...very satisfied). However, don't ask me at what speed it "actually" reads at since I am truly a newbie! Fast enough for me though! I can burn 3 movies in 2 hours or less...so what's the rush. I use XCopy. I configure it to copy, then walk away. Presto! It's like magic! Augh, we morons are so easy to impress.

Use XCopy ? and the movies work on your DVD Player ? I Don't know why, but if it was that easy, you'd think people wouldn't need to use all the ripping and encoding and authoring programs out there :-/

The store where I buy my computer equipment from has a 10 day return policy. That way if I don't like something, I have 10 days to return it for a full refund. Also, are the DVD rom drives sold in Israel different from the ones in the US? If so, the lite-on drive you have might rip at 16x, but the american one might rip at 2, because of the copyright limitations.

I Doubt it, all the equipment that comes to Israel, including 90% of the movies, are from the US, we just don't have the return policy ;-)

Hello, I endedup buying the Liteon 166s. The drive rips single layer movies (including dvdr and other NON encrypted dvd's) at approxamately 8x, with spikes up to 11x, and as low as 3x. Dual layer movies rip at an average of 4x, with spikes up to 6x, and low as .5x. Also, this DVD-rom can EAISLY be made region free. It only took about 5 min on google, and I got everything I needed. If anyone else finds a faster ripping DVD-ROM, please post and let me know.

Ripping speed depends on how the movie was authored to the DVD media, average ripps will be around 6x to 8x, but on some movies you can get upto 10x to 14x and of course on others you can get as low as 2x to 5x.

Sefy, any other known DVD-ROMs that haven't been "fixed" by MPAA? I'm coming up short on searching for retailers selling the ones you mentioned. My current setup is a Pine 16X DVD-rom and the sony dru-500a(x).

When i used smart-ripper and saw the 1.5x speed on both drives, i thought they were dying until i came here.

I've basicly mentioned 3 drives: AOpen, Lite-On and Pioneer

But you can also try AsusTek DVD's, although i'm not a big fan of Asus myself, some people consider them to be a good manufacturer.
