Hi. In October I bought a Sony DRU 500A and have just now started backing up some of my dvd's with the advent of dvd2one. I am getting pretty annoyed though that smartripper and DVD decrypter are only ripping at 2x. This takes forever and when I used to rip straight from my old DVD-ROM drive that came with computer I would get 16-18x rip speeds. I have Force ASPI installed. Anyone know how I can speed these long rip times up?

I don't have the exact answer for you, but I have the same problem with the same burner. It has something to do with the DMA mode settings. It just won't let you go any faster than what you're at. I'm at the same speed as you.

Sony rips DVD's only at 2x. Deal with it. There is no way of fastening it. Maybe with new firmware.

DMA is enabled first from motherboard bios and then from Device Manager -> IDE controller (properties) -> Advanced settings or something.

That's why many users use a second dvdrom drive to do the ripping, not the burner itself.

Three DVD-ROM drives I strongly recommand, especialy for the ripping process: AOpen / Lite-On and Pioneer.

I've personaly tested all of them and they worked great and extremly fast, i've even reached 14x on my Pioneer 106S which is now a very old (and abused) drive.

no, it turns out the movie was unencrypted no CSS or anything, but it was a three volume set and the other two only ripped at 2.000000x so i dunno. i was excited though.

no no, it's not a problem. from what i can tell the manufacturers hard wired the 2.0x read speed into the drive so that's all you can get. i was just surprised that one disc ripped at faster than that. the only reason i mentioned it is because i thought that is that was possible someone might be able to devise a way around it.

Do yourself a favour, get a different drive if you can, AOpen / Lite-On or Pioneer, they are the best!

What do you mean make your old DVD drive an External ? and I don't think external (Parallel or USB) will beat the speed of an Internal IDE drive.

Most DVD burners RIP at 2X,including the Sony 500 and Pioneer 05.Like stated above, buy a $40 reader. If someone claims to RIP dvds at 16x,on ANY drive, they are wrong! You might get an 8X rip on a 16x dvd drive,if lucky!

Says who ? who are you to tell those who rip at 16x that they are wrong ? you want a picture of the ripping while it happens ?

Although it only happened to me twice, I did get a 16x ripping on my Pioneer 106S DVD-ROM drive.

You can RIP audio at 16x,you can not rip VIDEO at 16X! The 16x rating on a drive,is the READ speed NOT RIP speed! You must be real new to burning, not to know that!

I guess I should make this clear.A CSS protected dvd will not rip at the stated speed. After the movie has been backed up,it is no longer CSS protected, thus can be backed up like a normal data disc! Most original dvds are CSS protected!

jeepers94, i'm new ? you got any idea who I am ? I wrote the guides on ripping, using every program that exists!

I know full well what the numbers on a CD an DVD Drive mean, and what do you think ripping is ? writing to a CD ? no, Ripping is READING, since is it READING the data from the DVD!

I think you BETTER do a little READING before you write any more guides!

I Think you better get some more and ALOT more experience in ripping before you know what you are talking about!

I've already ripped movies at 14x, and i've hit 16x a few times as well, using Smart Ripper and DVD Decryptor, and all the movies I have use CSS protection.

So unless you can call ripping something other then reading the Data off the Media, protected or not, that's what reading is, the CSS is being done in CPU, ripping is reading which is what is being done from the DVD to your HDD.

I will bet I have more YEARS of burning than you,let alone more knowledge of the facts.Just because you copy another persons guides, does not mean you know S..T! Ripping is the WHOLE process. If you believe you are right,so be it,but you are WRONG! I won't bother reading this post anymore, some people named Sefy have crap for brains!I was going to provide links to several software companies faqs on RIPPING!

Excuse me ?? I haven't copied ANYONE'S guide! and when you have 10 years experience with PC's, then we will talk!

Learn to behave, and make sure you know what you are saying, and better check your facts before you make idiotic accusations which are FALSE, and anyone who already emailed me KNOWS i'm the author of the guide, and i've started it 3 years ago on VCDhelp, so it would be an honour NOT to read your posts.
