O.K. thanks for the reply arnie...now which firmware do I download...the latest one? And how do I do it. I've read the disclaimer about damaging your drive and just because I like my new NEC drive doesn't mean I'd like to replace my I/O magic with one 'cause I ruined it (actually I would if my wife wouldn't find out). LOL

Thanks in advance.

I am not the best one to give you advice on this drive, as you can see in my post on page one, the I/O that I had was a BTC and gave me nothing but problems, especially in the area of media recognition. There are about 8 updates after yours, take your pick. But with that amount of updates no wonder you are having disk problems. I will tell you this once you flash this drive you will not be able to flash it back to a previous version. You can do this with some drives but not with a BTC. You can do a google on the drive and see what worked for other people and go accordingly. Just my take on it.

Moser bauer printable dvds: I haven't encountered that printable media.I haven't even seen any Nero logs with that MID code!

I/O magic 16x:Benq 1620,EMPA-WTF,and BTC. A good example of a brand name outsourcing their drives. I wander how many other different brands I/O uses on their 16x DVD-RW drives?

Give that firmware update a shot like arniebear posted.That media is probably a newer type so that MID code isn't listed for it to burn.Maybe there is a newer update so you can fix it?

If you want some high quality full hub printable +8x,then check out the verbatim data life plus and maxell.Mcc-003 and Maxell-002-00 on those babies!

Thanks guys...

@Arniebear

I'm not having problems with the drive...never have, it's only that the DVD Identifier prog that Saugamon suggested didn't recongize it. It was at that point he recommended a FW update. Maybe I will and maybe I won't...seeing as though I'm not having probs I probably won't. I'd hate to ruin a perfectly good drive (I'm a cheap bastard).

@saugamon

I'll give those Verbs a try when this spindle is dry(rhyme). Verbs are what I normally use.

Again thanks for the help guys.

Hi all,
I've been following this thread with interest. I just purchased a new external DVD burner: I/O Magic 16x Dual Format Double layer (model number - iDVD16DDBE. So far it's had more problems than my Lite-on burner, but that could be because of the movies I've been working with. Anyway I ran it through DVD Identifier and it comes up with RITEK as the manufacturer name. So I'm not sure if that's good or bad.
It also says it has burn speeds of up to 16x, but I think the fastest I've gotten on Double layer is 4x.

Loco the poet? LOL

Leee211: I/O magic outsource their drives.This means many different companies make their drives. External is no specialty of mine. I've seen quite a few posts on the I/O Magic 16x external drive in the DVD-RW drives forum.

4x is pushing it on dual layer media.Some drives are capable of 6x now.

Now for single layer,4x is about par till you make sure those backups are ok.Then you may be able to up it to 6x/8x with quality media.

What's the exact MID code for those ritek?
The Ritek-r03 and g05 are very good media. The R03 riteks perform just as well as my tys/verbatims/and hitachi maxells.

Now if those Riteks are dual layers,i've been reading posts of certain brands of DVD-RW drives are having problems with them.

Below are the manuf. Of that drive for I/O Magic. You should have an update disk that came w/ the drive. I strongly urge you to do a little research on the web before you update the firmware. Some are having major problems all of a sudden and some are having minor problems and some having none. It all depends on the firmware version. Most of the people having the problems are the BTC group. I hope that is not your group

OEM: BTC, CyberDrive or Philips-BenQ
Chipset:Mediatek or Philips

For NEC drives, I get all my firmware here: http://www.micheldeboer.nl/firmware/

I've got the NEC 3540A, running "1W7_rpc1.zip Liggy's And Dee's NEC 1.W7 including Bitsetting, Riplock removed and RPC1 (NEW 08-10-2005)" under modified firmware on the 3540 page. It is awesome firmware! I can rip a DVD 9 (dual layer) DVD in about 7-9 minutes.

Sorry for the newbie type question, but how can I tell what firmware I'm using?

I am having all sorts of problems with this drive, I am so ready to return it. It gets stuck at 1% writing, it jams up my computer, so far it's given me about 5 coasters with 5 good discs, that's only a 50% success rate so far....not too good.

Is there any particular reason you went with an external drive vs. an internal one? Installing an internal drive ins't much harder than exchanging the batteries in your remote. You can get the NEC 3540 on sale at newegg for around $40. And as temj said with the hacked firmware update, makes this drive one bad doggy.

Also...about the blanks. Look here, the results are mixed but don't look good.

The only reason I bought an external drive is because when you live in middle-of-nowhere Washington State and there's just ONE store in town that carries computer supplies AND I needed to get a new one quickly (long story), you don't have much choice. This was the ONLY DVD burner they had in stock. Next time I'll get it through TigerDirect!

Lee, I use this program. After running it, it will present you with a window with the name of your drive and the firmware you have installed for it. -

Here is a screen shot after running it on my system (Note: there are hundreds of different ways to find this out). -
