Which DVD burner works best to back up DVDs with DVD Shrink, and NERO. I know that this is a loaded question, but I am tired of wasting time and money on DVD burners.
Thanks,
Rich

Tired of wasting time and money with DVD-RW drives and you want a good one.
I had that same trouble. I have a benq 1620 on my last 2 pcs, same drive though. It performed so good that I wanted another burner for my spare pc. It took 3 burners before I bought another benq 1620 and stand alone compatability issues were resolved.Actually I only bought 1,and the other 2 came bundled with my pcs.Complete crap with most of those bundled DVD-RW drives!!!!!!!
I use quality plus format media, and it is booktyped to dvd-rom making them a heck of a lot more compatable on some of those picky stand alone drives. Much better than an HP/Khypermedia/and I/O magic 16x burner.
The 1620s are getting harder to find.Benq also makes the 1625 with the lightscribe capability and the 1640 which replaced the 1620.
99%+ backup success, 95%+ stand alone compatability-If a player doesn't recognize my booktyped backups,it won't play any burned media at all!
Ripping and burning on the fly? No problemo. Not advisable, but what the heck, the quality of these benqs are phenomenal. They do love quality media.Even the cheapo/elcrappo media seems ok,buy why risk it?
Nero and DVD Shrink are my main programs, but had to add AnyDVD in to the recipe for the newer encryptions. excellent combination on my dual drive main pc.
My next burner? Well after 1300+ backups on my main benq with many on the fly and 400+ backups on my backup pc,I am getting the benq 1640. I've got a broken pc sitting on the floor just begging for a benq.I think I'll put my original benq in that pc,and put the 1640 in my main pc!
I've got 3 other burners just sitting in a box, collecting dust. One of them is an HP 640c Lightscribe which came bundles with my main pc,it couldn't even come close to stand alone compatability compared to my benqs. My lite-on dvd rom and both benqs couldn't even re-rip those HP backups using taiyo yuden media!
Newegg.com is where I purchased my last benq, and that is where I'll get my 1640.Probably at the end of the month. $42-$44 including shipping for it.Hell of a buy on a quality burner. Just look at some of catfreaks posts.

Money wise the BenQ is a good burner it is a quiet drive, and it also has bitsetting ability, which I still think is a plus. I bought the 1625 retail from newegg for 61.00 and it has performed well, and has the litescribe capability. It also comes with the QSuite which lets you check your media, scan and bitset.

I have to chime in on my Liteon SOHW 1693S. It also has the ability to booktype to DVDRom and I've had nothing but success with it. The only issue I've had is with Maxell 1-8X DVD+R (made in Japan). It only recognizes them as 6&8X. 8X burns won't play but 6X will.
And then there are those around here that swear by the benz of the burner world.... the Plextor. The price is a bit more than some, but anyone who's owned one claims they're worth every penny, peso, or whatever currency...

I hesitated to mention the Plextor because it is pricey, but I bought a 716UL about 3 months ago and it is a beauty. It is a USB and will rip a dl at 12x, writes 4x disks up to 8x and booktypes.

I have two Plextor PX712S' and two Plextor PX716SA's. Love them all but I sure wish I'd steered clear of the SATA ! (Issues with RAID controllers) As nice as Plextor is on warranty, they left me hung out to dry with the SATA thing. We did try a LiteOn SOHW-1693S and it's absolutely great except for being so darn noisey. After solving the SATA issue I'm back to loving my Plextors though.

I read somewhere that the plextor PX-740A is actually a rebadged benq. I wouldn't hesitate buying another benq if the need ever arises although I like my litey too.

I got to admit, Lite-ons are noisy, they kind of rattle around. But but those BenQ's are really quiet, they just glide along.

I just bought a new NEC DVD_RW ND-3540A from Newegg for 39 bucks and it rocks. I know you're not supposed to burn at max speed but this beast will burn 12.6x. The Plextors are awesome too but for less than half the money I'll take an NEC anyday.

I have actually owned a bunch of different brands of DVD Writers (something my wife hates) and to tell the truth if set up right they all perform very well. I would say to get one with all the features you are looking for. What to look for you say? Well booktyping would be a plus, speed is good and dependability.
NEC - (pros)Always preformed flawless for me (cons)No booktyping ability
LieOn's - (pros)Fastest ripper around (cons)a little noisy
Pioneer - (pros)Solid burner (cons)not the fastest
Plextor - (pros)Awesome all around drive (cons)Price
BenQ - I will have to try one of these much to the disliking of the wife :-) LOL
Memorex External - (pros)this is actually a really good drive (cons)I would never buy there blank media :-)
I believe you would be happy with just about any drive on the market now a days they all seem to preform well.

Hi bb,
Hope you don't mind if I add to you pro's and con's list a little.
NEC: most are capable of booktyping with modified/hacked f/w.
Lite-on: (pros) most are booktyping ready (all except slimdrive/notebook I think).
Pioneer: (cons) most are not capable of booktyping. DRU-109 and DRU-110 are the only ones capable and they require being flashed with hacked f/w (buffalo).
Benq: (pros) booktyping ready. (cons) haven't found any yet.
Just curious, isn't your memorex a rebadged litey? There are some that are rebadged NEC's too I think.

Here's my list of DVD-RW drives:
Khypermedia +8x: Pro: came with my pc and I was charged for a 4x,cons: Backups wouldn't play on my apex player.
HP640c: Pro: Again, came with my present pc,has lightscribe: Con: Too many burn errors when trying to re-rip backups, coastered out hitachi media and some taiyo yuden, harder time playing on a few of my stand alones.
I/O Magic 16x: Pro: Booktyping, only cost $40 after rebate,DVD-R performed ok: Con: Pc of crap, even the booktyped dvd-roms had a hell of a lot of problems playing on my stand alones, typical I/O magic using many different brand named drives-this is an EMPA drive.
I/O Magic 16x: Pro: This is actually a rebadged benq 1620 so I got lucky,99% backup success rate, 100% on the fly burn rate,Booktypes,$40 price after rebate,Loves anything I slap in it, Backups play virtually anywhere,1 ligitimate burn coaster this year. Con: At least is wasn't an EMPA drive from middle east FIZO!
Benq 1620 retail: Pro: Same at my rebadged benq just above, except not a single coaster on this drive: Con: Cost me $50
Notice on all my DVD-RW drives.I still have all of them.
Viewing their own backups on the pc using windvd, all performed near perfection.
Playing on ps2s,stand alones, and other pc drives: That's where you could tell the compatability differences.I had no freezing/skipping during playback, main problem:Those stand alones had a heck of a time recognizing some of those burners backups: No disc inserted errors!
Re-ripping backups from one to another, Again, some had trouble at recognizing those other burners backups.
Having 2 benq 1620s: Booktyping the plus format to dvd-rom took care of majority of these issues.Burning on the fly,no problem for them.
They burned ok but overall performance on stand alones varied considerably.
So if anyone is looking for a burner,it depends what they want to do with your backups. Playing on a couple stand alones, most will do. Playing them on a slew of dvd-drives,re-ripping those backups later on down the road,or even rip and burn on the fly,the quality will stick out!
Just a few things I learned the hard way. Having my first khpermedia DVD-RW drive not be able to have its backups play on my apex player, but yet I could re-rip those KH backups with my benq 1620 and played perfectly in the apex. Both plus format/both verbatim media +4x/but 2 different lasers and my apex could pick it out! That apex would not recognize that EMPA drive's booktyped backups, but yet my benq had no trouble re-ripping some of that burners backups.
Having that I/O magic 16x which was a rebadged benq working so great, that I wanted to find another drive for my spare pc. I got the second benq and all my stand alone compatability issues went away!

My list goes as this
Plextor 716UL ... a really great drive, it is fast/booktypes and not one coaster, however it is really pricey. But for Dual Layer burning you cannot beat this drive, not one coaster and it booktypes them and they play great even on my old Toshiba standalone.
NEC1300a ... a real workhorse and has burned about a 500 disks, but is not a dual layer.
HP640c ... has the litescribe technology and is a rebadged BenQ, have not had any problems with this drive and it automatically booktypes, not having to set anything.
Lite-on 1633SX ... another workhorse drive, and is forgiving of anything even a badflash, and it booktypes. But as all Lite-ons is a noisy drive.
I/O Magic 1008UI ... a rebadged BTC drive and a piece of crap, crashed several computers when plugged into the USB ports, is picky on media, it only likes cheap won't do Sony's or Maxells. You get lots of semaphore erros with the drive, due to its enclosure chipset.
BenQ 1625 ... It is new and working out well, booktypes, no coasters and is very quiet. Put this on the wifes computer and she is liking it a whole lot.

You can locate your burner model number in most dvd programs like:
Neroinfotool
dvd decrypter
dvd shrink
Or you can download this free handy program:
http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video_software/dvd-r_tools/dvd_...
Both those I/O's of mine were bought 3 months apart, same price on sale at staples, same store and 2 different manufacturers. My empa drive noted an automatic firmware updating program to download,That is how I found out it was an EMPA drive. Those programs I listed:The empa drive was recognized as a generic name like: 16xIDE DVD-RW so it was very hard to locate actual manufacturer.
Take note of the firmware version for your I/O, that will help ID that burner. That dvdidentifier will also tell you the firmware version.

That's the blank media right? A friend gave me a spindle of 50 a while back and I just got the Epson r320 (awesome printer) so I thought I'd give em a try. So as far as upgrading the firmware where do I go now. It still perform well...but I can't understand why it won't recongize the disc through DVD identifier.

Use the dvd identifier, open up the program. On the top, look for Drive selection +Drive write capabilities.Click on it,and scroll till you get that I/O drive, not nec drive. You'll then see how dvdidentifier recognizes your burner:
[f:]BENQ DVD DD 1620 [B7W9]
That's how dvdidentifier shows my I/O magic 16x drive. The B7W9 is the firmware version, which is up to date! Just post back that drive# and firmware version.I'll try to look up your latest update if I can.

This is the drive info from DVD Decrypter...it is the same in DVD Identifier: DVDRW IDE 16X A07F (ATA)
The blanks are TDK "Print On" DVD+R's not full hub, made in India, 8x, with a matte white surface...produces a pretty professional looking disc. Ink Jet printable.
