temj Hoorraayyy!!!!!! I've finally succeeded! Hopefully that's me sorted now. Going to try another one just now, doing as you said before to make sure I've sussed it.

I would have been in the shop buying another computer after launching the other out the window if I hadn't had your help, thank you so much!

Hope not to speak to you soon - if you know what I mean!

Thanks
Sam

Get rid of InCD! It will only cause problems when burning DVD's. Go here to get the Nero InCD Cleantool - http://ww2.nero.com/nero6/eng/InCD_CleanTool.html

"Power calibration error "
I think it is your blank media you are using, I would try a different brand such as Verbatim or Taiyo Yuden.

But, here is what Nero says about Power calibration errors:

I get a 'Power calibration error' or 'Calibration area (almost) full' error message. Why?

Power Calibration is controlled by the recorder.

Before any write operation, all recorders must do a 15 step power test to determine the optimum power for writing to the CD; this is called "Optimum Power Calibration"(OPC). During the write, it continues to do this test to get the best write throughout the whole CD; this is called "Running Optimum Power Calibration" (ROPC).

This whole process is controlled by the recorder, though initiated by programs such as Nero. There is an area on the inner part of the CD for the test and test data info to be stored. You can use this area up to 999 times.

If you receive the "Power calibration error" or "Power calibration area is (almost) full" error message, the cause will be either poor media, poor power, or a defective recorder.

Please try the following solutions:

1. Update the firmware of your recorder. Please check the manufacturer's website for the latest version.

2. Try another brand of media.

3. Try different power connectors, and for recorders, do not share power with other devices. It needs its own power connector. If the error occurs with an external recorder, the power source in the chassis could be the cause. As a test, try to take the recorder out of the external chassis and connect it internal.

4. Try different configurations, such as taking the CD-ROM to the primary IDE bus as slave and have only the recorder connected to the secondary IDE bus as master.

5. Send the recorder in for service.

Could there be a file deleted somewhere which is causing these faults? Computer seems to be taking forever to load up when turned on.

as i say, your firmware is up to date (though it's old), but that rewritable disc you're using can't be recognised by your burner. you're gonna have to try another disc. Here's an example of what you see when firmware can recognise a disc (not the best example as it's CMC but it's an example) of what it should look like, you get a 3line paragraph such as this -
Quote:
Recorder: DVDRW IDE1004, Media type: DVD-R
Disc Manufacturer: CMC MA - G. AE1
Disc Application Code: 64, Disc Physical Code: 193
Quote:
Insert empty disc to write to.
(Medium in drive: unknown. Medium required by compilation: DVD-R/RW, DVD-RAM.)
This disc is not empty.
(Medium in drive: DVD-RW. Medium required by compilation: DVD-R/RW, DVD-RAM.)
Accessing disc...
(Medium in drive: DVD-RW. Medium required by compilation: DVD-R/RW, DVD-RAM.)
- disc not empty upon starting burn. though the disc isn't being recognised either..

Your main problem is your burner's firmware is not up to date enough to use that particular disc
