The fan inside the slimline ps2 is actually usless, you can remove it and it wont make a difference, I've dont this on a spare slimline, and nothing happened to it, played san andreas for couple of hours with the fan plu removed and it went perfect, but the slimline does have overheating issues, the stock fan inside will make no big difference, since it is that powerful, and doesnt circulate air properly.

Can you tell me where you are getting yours?

The old bulky ones are no longer availble on the market, only the slimline model is, you can only get a second hand one, but there is no real issue with the slimline, as long as you keep it well ventilated it will be fine. I prefer the slimline over the bulky model.

When i bought my V12 on 29 DEC 04.
It worked just fine for 4 monthes no OVERHEATING NO ERRORS(@8-9Hrs a day/5-6 Days a week)
After around 10 months it started heating up and scratching my discs bumping onto them, made round circles on some of them(@7-8Hrs a day/4-5 Days a week)
1 Jan 06 NEW YEAR SURPRISE! MY LASER BUSTED! (Bcame whitiesh in colour)
15 JAN Had it repaired with new laser + Ripper iv MOD"CHEAP."
AFTER SEVEN MONTHS.....
Working as GOOD AS NEW! (@10Hrs a day/2-3 Days a week)
17 SEPT 06 IT'S MY EIGHTEENTH BIRTHDAY! & MY PSTWO'S PREAPARING FOR ANOTHER SUPRISE.
SOME TIME IN DEC 06 Now it has returned to it's roots a little bit of heating and a LOT of laser banging(Mostly during FMVS,MUSICALS & CUT-Scenes;@3-4Hrs a Day/2-3 Days a week)
SO.....i donn't KNOW!
p.s. This is going to get me BANNED as it did on my very first post. (I hope not)

I've never had really serious problems, only the ps2 turned itself off twice since i had it, I got my slimline about a month after its release, and have no problems with the laser or major heating.

Exactly how do you tell the slimline is overheating ?? coz so far no-one's given any indication of exact temperature from factory recommended, from what i can fathom it appears your all going by how warm the unit is ,well common sence dictates that the closer the electronics is to the cover the warmer it will be but overheating issues ??? give me a break the only recall was for overheating power cords
by the way mines on top of the tv and the PS2 is only warm to the touch *winks*

Overheating is when you start experiencing problems, its so obvious that the system will get warm, thats the same with every electronic device. My slimline has shut off when it has got too hot and has refused to power up until it cooled down a bit, which was strange, on another occasion, on another occasion, the graphics were coming out very awkward. Im supposing we are all talking about such problems when we say overheating, and not that fact that the system is warm.

Yes, it is safe to play for long periods of time, my slimline has been left on for longer then a day a few times, just make sure its placed in a well ventilated area, and also, if you can stand the system up, it will make a big difference.

your welcome, its best to stand it up, because it has more surface area exposed for a higher level of heat dissipation, which keeps it cooler, because more air gets past it carrying the heat away.

I have found a ghetto but very simple solution to fixing my overheated slimline. First i took a vornado fan, (about 75 bucks) but very narrow, u could use most any fan so long as it does not have the metal mesh. Next i went to auto zone and got a large funnel, maybe 18 inches in diameter. Next i cut about a 1.5ft section off of a garden hose and duct taped it to the nipple of my funnel and then duct taped the funnel to the front of the vornado. I then put the other end of the hose at the back of the Ps2 in a gap were all of the wires connect. You can tear a small chunk off of an aquarium filter and put it in the hose to filter dust, but i dont think dust is much of a problem. I have found that it works best to put the hose on the back of the ps2. But yeah this works excellent, as I have never had my ps2 over heat after i rigged this up, in fact the entire unit stays quite cold to the touch after being on for hours.

I remember playing long ago for many hours, I think more than 6 or 7. With my girlfriend, we had nice play times with Baldur's Gate 2, Champions of Norrath, and Dynasty Warriors. And she had surely played many 5-hour sessions with Suikoden.
The console just get somewhat warm, but it never felt burning. It's a PStwo slim v12 SCPH-70012. After all, it's a big chip working hard, so it's normal to get hot.

Ive had a DMS 4 pro in the slim since i got it in Dec 2005 I bought it pre modded didnt really need it but I heard that the lasers in the V14+'s are much better then the others and so its true been using it non stop since Dec 05 ussualy on 12 hours a day running burnt games sometimes 30% of the time on Cheap Princo media other times on Ritek and runs Great Still no lag or long loading times whihc means the laser is in tact Its used always not just by me my bro I finsihed playing Toca Race Driver 3 10min ago played it for 7 hours staright online and now he's playing Kingdom hearts 2 both backups and no air con is on its the middle of summer here and its 32.9c in the room the Ps2 is in and it hasnt stuffed up.
I think it might be something some of you are doing?
-Is your ps2 in a Dusty/Dirty Envioriment are the cupboards dusty on top if they are there is more dust in the air and air runs into the ps2 meaning it will get dirty inside faster and overheat?
-If your slim Ps2 is an early v12 the original slims from 04 check on the Playstation.com if your AC Adpater power brick is a faulty one if it is thios causes it to overheat in 1-2hours and 50% Of early slims nov 2004 aprx-April 2005 are affected?
-If you have a chip the chip might not be installed properly and is producing more heat?
-Is the Ps2 on a carpet or rug surface if it is it makes it MUCH HOTTER you should always put it on a cu[oard surafce or tiles, lino, floorborads not carpet unless it stands vertically on a stand then its alright..?
The fan does cool a bit it has an exausht system whihc cools a bit the heatsink does the rest dosent mean cause the fan is small it wont cool the Nintendo Wii is 2-3x more powerfull then the Ps2 and has a Big Heatsink and a little fan smaller then the slim ps2 one and stays cooler then any console ive seen the power brick is practically cold!

It is like different places have different issues for overheating.
If you live in EUROPE your PS2'S not likely to overheat or really HEATUP because of the cool and dry atmosphere as opposed to Asia (tropical)where the atmosphere is hot and humid (over all) where it heats up much sooner . People stay near beaches, sands or roads can have dust problems. Big vents for air circulation can also cause inscects and similar creatures to go inside console and sleep and lay eggs and die and rot.(WORST CASE SCENARIO)

You are right. Here (Rosario, Argentina), summers can get very hot and humid, and unless you have an A/C, you're fried.

About what dazila said, the ac adapter overheats if you do have the faulty adapter, it doesnt do anything to the ps2, its just a heat up problem with the adapter itself, they found out some of the early adapters had this problem when a few people complained about the plastic cover on the ac adapter melting. So it was a fire hazard for which reasons they done the recall.
