Hi, I have Win XP, P4 2.53ghz, A05. I am trying to figure out why my Lite-on 166S can only go at 2x? DVD Decryptor doesn't even recognize my 16x Liteon drive. In the controls my DVD drive is on PIO Mode, and it won't let me change it. I also got another system with Win98, and DVD Decryptor recognizes Lite-on drive, and rips at up to 11.8x.

Maybe try uninstalling , change jumper settings & reinstall...
My recent purchase of a Litey 165H gave no problems on install , ripped at X12 straight out of the box

Right click My Computer>Properties>Hardware tab folder>Device Manager>Click the + beside IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers. Now right click Primary IDE Channel>properties>Advanced settings and set DMA if available for device 0&1. Do the same for Secondary IDE Channel and reboot. There is an firmware update for your Litey 166 model and you should be ripping dvd's at 11-12x on a routine basis. Sorry I don't have the link at this time for the firmware update. Search Google m8. My Litey 165H rips dvd's at 11-12x and so should yours :)

And another thing I've noticed regarding UDMA settings is that if you are using an Intel-based chipset and running the Intel Application Accelerator, then you won't see any UDMA settings in the "Properties" tab of your IDE controller, though UDMA appears to be working fine.

Since no one else mentioned, I thought it would help to add, that installing an ASPI Layer can drasticly increase ripping speeds as well, of course i'd only recommand using 4.60 Build 1021, as the rest of them are known to cause loads of troubles.

I never had any problem ripping with NO ASPI layer.
Smartripper just says NO ASPI detected & I would just OK it but it lists what files are contained on the DVD & it begins it process straight off anyway.
I've heard ASPI mentioned numerous times but not actually sure that everyone knows what they're talking about...
My Lite-On 165 rips at x11-x12 without ASPI layer is what I know for a fact !: )

I tried a search but couldnt find anything that could help me.
I own a Liteon 16x JLMS XJ-HD 165H
I was ripping at 4-8x no poblem
Now all of a sudden it only is ripping at 2.4x
I have changed nothing on the computer. it just started ripping slower.
Its showing UDMA mode 2 in the settings
Anyone help please?

Fixed it
It had switched to PIO, must of had 6 errors.
I couldnt force back into DMA so i had to dissconect it then reconect it.
Its back to fast ripping now.
There may have been an easier way

Glad to hear it... My Win XP tends to change my ata controller (secondary) to PIO sometimes. I simple right click and uninstall it, reboot, system recovers (finds new hardware & installs it), reboot, and I am back at ultra dma 2 mode again...

If using SmartRipper, insert a dvd that rips at 2.4x. Go to Settings>Movie (tab folder)>and where it says VOB file access, enable auto. Where it says options be sure DeMacrovision and fast error skip is enabled. Go to the
Files\Backup (tab folder) and be sure the above I mentioned is enabled as well. Rip the dvd and see what your dvd rip speed is. If using DVD Decryptor>tools>settings>General (tab folder) enable remove Macrovision protection.Go to the device (tab folder)>enable fast error skip. Go to I/O tab folder and enable ignore read errors and if running WinNT/Win2K/WinXP/Server 2003 then enable SPTI. If you're not running any of these O\S then enable ASPI. You can do the same using SmartRipper (ASPI) and see if you dvd rip speed increases. I own the same dvd drive and sometimes dvd rips are slower than others (DeCSS, fingerprints& scratches on dvd) can slow the dvd rip process m8. I rip on the average about 10-11x dvd speed.
