My Lite-On 165 is running in UDMA mode 2 and sometimes it will rip 14x others it won't even break 4x...I can tell when it will be fast because you can hear it pause to spin up the DVD...but it's not doing that now. Any thoughts?

Did you check the DVD's? If a DVD is heavily scratched it will be ripped at a slower speed because the player has more trouble reading the data.
I have the same thing with my Toshiba. A new DVD gets ripped at 9x, while a badly damaged one only reaches 4x!
But hey, my old drive ripped at a max of 1,6x. So why should we complain? ;-)

Just like pc games have cd protection, so does dvd's (Macrovision). DVD rippers easily bypass this weak protection, but this can still cause a slower dvd rip. DVD movies that have "extra's"(games, video's) can also slow down the dvd rip process, along with scratches and finger prints. ChickenMan, mod at CD-Freaks, informed me finger prints are worse than scratched cd's. I own a Litey LTD 165H and updated firmware (ch11) and this "bad boy" can read all formats(Nero Info Tool). I rip dvd's at 11-12x on the average.

I've just recently bought one of these too (so I can CopyToDVD and Rip quicker).
I'd much appreciate a link to a firmware update also.
Although I'm about to go looking now I have a firmware no. to go after...
LOL
Peace

I'm well happy with the Lite-On 165 though as I used to RIP using Pioneer 104 and only got a speed of between x2.5 - x5
Using the JLMS XJ HD-165H I now rip at speeds of x5 - x14

The LiteON LTD 165H drive changes to JLMS XJ HD-165H after the ch11 firmware update(OEM drives). I adore this DVD drive soo much I couldn't give it away :) Blazin dvd rip speed (11-12x), lightnin' audio rip speed (23-24x) and very accurate dae too. Talk about kung fu fightin'. kicks as fast as lightnin', the Litey DVD 163/165/166 are the "Bruce Lee's" of overall DVD rips speeds of various formats, not to mention these drives can read all media formats and read backups of Safedisc 2.8.x& SecuROM 4.8.x

P.S.
I agree , I do adore this drive.
Excellent speeds although it's a little noisy at the start of a read.
For £34:99 , I was well chuffed!

No, not at all. If you have nero installed go to the Nero Info Tool and examine your Litey DVD Drive m8!< Worth lookin' at.

well I'll leave it alone then...
It is telling me I have CH11 already
SUPERB !!!
I've given advice to people to use Nero Info Tool before myself.
Didn't think that my LITEY would have the latest firmware already on it , but it does.
LOL
It probably has something to with the fact that I bought it at Special Reserve only 2 weeks ago I suppose as to why it has firmware already.

whenever i get "rip" speeds of 11-12 x, i check the dvd decrypter log, it says it it COPIES the vob files.....whenever i rip at around 7x or less...it says it DECRYPTS the files. I urge everyone to check the logs when using dvd decrypter after u rip...if it doesnt use the word "decrypt" then the file is not even encrypted WHICH EXPLAINS WHY YOU THINK U ARE RIPPING AT 11x, but ur not, ur just copying.

It is easier to tell in Smartripper.
I've not used DVD Decrypter to date but have heard it's alright.
I usually get X8 whilst ripping encrpted DVD.
Had about 3 out of 60-70 or so that needed to search for key and took a long while about it (but success in the end)
2 DVD's that Smartripper couldn't/wouldn't decrypt ;

Herb,
DVD Decrypter is by far the better dvd ripper m8. The "ignore read errors" function alone puts this dvd ripper past Smart Ripper. I don't see SmartRipper ripping dvd's in iso format, but DVD Decrypter sure can.

That's a fair point.
I use UDF/IFO mode though , although I've heard ISO mode would be better for burning back up's of PS2 games.
Which I'll be looking to do soon : )
I've never had a compatibility problem with stand alones BTW (using UDF/ISO).

It takes roughly 1 hour to burn a movie at 1x m8. Besides, it is recommended to burn video slow.

I bought some Traxdata X1 (but they're X2 on my Pioneer 104 f/w 1.31 <-- only this f/w mind)!!
I had problems burning 2hr + movies at X2 on what are pretty decent blank media.
The final chapter froze (everytime)
I tend to burn all movie back ups @X1 and just data @ X2 now ... so in essence I'm ageeing with Shoey wholeheartedly.

I have an MSI MS-8216 16X DVD drive, and i just got it. Have never had a DVD drive on my computer. Can you guys tell me some tricks to maximize the speed of this drive? When i was using SmartRipper to make a backup or a movie (in the movie mode, or option whatever) it was only ripping at 2x, which is quite slow, but it took only about 30 minutes, so i think it only ripped the first chapter. Any suggestions on how i could speed this up to at least somewhere around 8x, or 16x would be amazing. Like i said im just getting into making DVD backups so im a newbie. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks

jbe,
Ripping dvd's is mainly hardware dependent. What I mean by this is how fast the dvd drive can rip a dvd. Sure a faster processor, ata/133 hd helps, but if your dvd can only rip dvd's at 2x, not too much you can do about that. I love MSI products and own a KT4VL MS-6712 mobo. You should have went with a LiteON LTD 163/165/166 model. All models rip about 12-13 dvd speed m8.

Make sure your bios and windows is in Ultra DMA mode. This will speed up dvd-rips.
