I can save you some time. I just did a time run, AnyDVD vs HDD source using RB with GoldenEye as the source disk (in excellent condition). With my newer equipment, and possibly the updated RB, I came out about 5 minutes faster with the HDD files, that was including the rip time using AnyDVD + DVD Decrypter. Not quite the difference I saw before. Even had it been five minutes slower, I would still opt for the hard drive files.
With RB the optical drive was on an extra 12 minutes for the Prepare segment alone (optical prep time was 17 minutes opposed to 5 with HDD files), not counting the on time for the encoding process. Interestingly enough, the rip to the HDD took the same amount of time as the Prepare segment with the optical drive, both took 17 minutes. The time difference beteween methods isn't as significant as the on time for the optical drive. With a lot of encodes taking 1.5 to 2 hours the optical drive is cycling on and off for that period of time. If a person does a lot of encoding with RB, it would drastically shorten the lifespan of a drive if the optical drive was used with AnyDVD instead of using HDD files. To sum it up, using HDD files is slightly faster with a significant reduction in time the optical drive is in use.

Quote:I did the experiment with Cinderella Man with "movie only" and another disc with the full movie and they look the same to me on my 32' HDTV.
Which goes to show, with RB, you can have your cake and eat it to. Glad Sophocles didn't see that. LOL He has a thing about cake. ;)
You know, Brobear, I was thinking about the wear and tear on the drive as well, when you can just rip to the hard drive with the reading of it instead of letting the program "do it's thing" with the drive! Very good point and I guess that ends that..... now onto the multiple enConder process test!
