I'm a newbie to camera's I just wanna add I like alot of zoom But I really don't see any that zoom far in my price range,

Also I really don't understand Zoom how good is 3x optical/5x digital ?
I guess the only real way to tell is to go look at it in the store?

the only real way is to check it out in a store. I like the sony digital cybershot cameras ..... I bought the DCS-N1:
http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/specs/Sony/sony_dscn1.asp
I got a bargain on this one..... it only cost me 300.00

check out that web page I posted. Go to the page and check out the CAMERAS ...... hit the manufacturer you want..... and now you have choices!

oh so you seen my pixs! LOL I have the best of both worlds....... when I want I can use the Canon DSL to take great shots with that big lens of mine..... or when I'm on the road I got my trusty little 8.1 Mega Pixel Sony cybershot DSC-N1. very handy!

did you check out the web page I showed you?
http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/specs/Sony/sony_dscn1.asp

If you're looking for durability Sony is the only way to go. I have had a Sony Cybershot for three and a half years. Its been dropped down a mountain in Arizona, its sat in my truck in -30 temperatures, it has been thrown, kicked, sat on, dropped, and has been to hundreds of partys where drunk people have done god knows what to it, and has been dropped in a cup of beer. Still works great. I'm looking at new ones now but only because of advancements in size, features, and mega pixels, it's time to upgrade.

Once you get into the high-power range of digital cameras, the lens becomes more important than the body for image quality. I have a Nikon D70, and after replacing the lens that I've had for years for a brand-new $XXXX one, I have found that the quality increased dramatically, even more than that of newer camera bodies. I think a bad lens can really diminish the quality of photos taken with a good camera, and a good lens can contribute to it. The margin of quality in lenses is much higher than that of high-range DSLR's, so choosing between cameras isn't as important as choosing between lenses.

Brilliant!

lol @ the old time camera, Where's the film come out? j/k

I'm still trying to make up my mind.
I'm looking at the specs But I really don't no what I'm looking at.

There was alot of good user reviews on the canon but these other cameras have more pixels and other things but not many reviews so I dont no, also I can't find the sony on that website or cnet .

Canon 5MP Powershot A530 $150 4x/4x 1.8 LCD

Sony 6 MP Cyber-shot DSC S500 $140 3x/2x 2.4 LCD

Kodak 7.1 MP Easyshare C743 $140 3x/5x 2.4 LCD

@iHoe

That's a pretty lens- it's about the same Focal Length as my Zoom lens, but it looks much more compact... and I like the colors. The MTF look really pristine, as does the photo on the site. If only I had money...

Brilliant!

Thanks again Ihoe, But If I should go with more pixels then why not the Kodak???
Does everyone else Feel like the sony is the best choice here?
Not that I don't trust IHoe I'm just wondering!
I have a 1Gb for my psp I can use with the the sony so that's a Plus.

Well tomorrow I'm going to go review them Cause I have nothing better to do) and I will report back.

(I should of started my own thread Sorry)

What is ISO 800 Will it allow me to take pics in the dark?

Also the sony only has Automatic focus adjustment is that going to hurt me?

more pixels doesn't mean much, ONLY if you want to crop a photo tighter.
10.1 mp and 8.2 mp on the SAME sized sensor can result in more 'noise' in the final picture of the higher mp camera.

people are convinced that more pixels make a better picture, not true.
5mp is all one needs.

@RobTaylor....... it's a matter of preference whether you want more pixels or not...... I crop and enlarge pictures and I can attest that the pixel content means alot! sooooooooo I disagree when you say:

but that's just my opinion and experience. Others might agree with you.

Quality gets bottlenecked somewhere along the line, whether it's the pixel capacity, sensor quality, lens quality, etc. A 8mp camera could perform better than a 5mp camera, or it could perform worse, depending on other factors. I agree that a 4092x3072 image could look worse than a 800x600 image if the image sensor is noisy, blurry, etc. but on that same note I disagree with you when you say it dosen't matter at all. IT matters, but it's not the sole determinant factor for image quality and clarity.

I just got a great new compact flash card for my camera that will take advantage of it's fastest speed, because the card is soooooo fast it won't imped the performance of the camera! it's the new SanDisk Extreme IV 2.0GB compact flash...... the fastest read and write times you can get with a card. I bet it also enhances the quality of the write to disk of the camera, too!

ya ya, BUT it all depends on how fast your CAMERA can write. no sense getting a fast card when your camera is maxed out and can't take advatage of the faster write speed of the card.

and yes, mp matter, but not as much as everyone thinks. people see higher mp and think it's a better camera, not so.

Do You Need More Megapixels?
QUOTE
Canon PowerShot SD450 Digital Elph

The durable SD450, released in late 2005, captures excellent color and detail with a 5-megapixel sensor. After testing its replacement, the 6-megapixel Elph, we found that the image quality is about the same. The extra pixels may benefit prints larger than 8.5 x 11, but otherwise the difference is marketing clap.
$299
Wired Test rating:

Nikon D50

This SLR cam's large image sensor produces sharp photos worthy of enlarging to 11 x 14 inches, despite its "lowly" 6.1 megapixels. The generous 2-inch LCD screen and large handgrip make it simple to operate. And because it takes SD (instead of CF) memory cards, thrifty photogs can reuse supplies from their point-and-shoot gear.
$700 (with lens)
Wired Test rating:

Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ1

The 5-megapixel TZ1 produces crisp photos, even in low light. Blown-up shots were better than those from many 6- to 8-megapixel rivals. The 10X zoom lens with optical image stabilization further enhances its ability to capture detail; you get steady shots of the subject you want now and don't have to crop onscreen later, throwing out valuable image data.

I am happy with my Rebel XT and I recommend everyone at least check it out. Or the XTi which is the brother to it with new features. Over Christmas I am going to be acquiring a new lens.
