I used to be a pro photographer.
Last year I bought the Canon EOS 350D (Black)
It is EXCELLENT !
Does everything I could possibly want, and even the supplied lens (18-55mm)is sharp and clear.
The viewfinder is very sharp unlike some I looked at, and the noise levels very low.
There is also no delay in taking the photo after the button is pressed, unlike some earlier cameras I checked.
So if you're thinking of a digital camera check this out first !

Although Sony's cameras are pretty sharp I think Canon has proven to make the best consumer digital cameras time and time again. Just take a look at reviews at some of the main digital photography sites like dpreview.com

ok you guys seem to know camera. I will tell you what i want the camera for and if you can, can you tell what I should get.
I want to be able to take pictures of sports. So i need something where there is a ood sports shutter, i want to be able to have a lot of space, so i would use SD or CF. Lighting in arena isnt the best so It would need a good aperature. Also i want optical zoom

check out the canon 350D, they are going for around 800-900.
the image quality will be the same as the 20D and 30D (same sensors), although the camera is physically smaller than the D's.
pass on the kit lense, it's sub-par, but not a bad starter lens to get aquainted.
then again, the 20D is selling for around 1000-1300 and they include an accesory kit ($350 or so) for free! check out henrys(dot)com for pricing or futureshop(dot)ca.

Canon genrally and the 350D more specific.
As stated it is a great camera for the money and the only little issue I have with it is the small size compared to my other camera (EOS 5) and this is overcome by buying the grip for it. Now it is a great size and very balanced in the hand. The grip also allows for the use of two batteies instead of the one for shooting all day plus it allows you to use normal AA battries in a pinch.
This is the most complete sub 1000 dSLR there is!!!!

What it really comes down to though, is what camera is the best for your price range.

nikon is number 1. I have the Nikon D50 6 megapixal. For the price you cant go wrong, just as good as the $3,000 cameras. You can take photos like pros. and easy to use.
