By the time I was involved in warhead assembly, above ground testing wasn't allowed. So I never got to see the mushroom cloud everyone is familiar with. The underground test was quite enough. I was involved with artillary deployment of the warhead. The test was underground so no big gun was involved but it felt like an earthquake out 20 miles. It was done in the Pacific on one of the islands thats probably not there anymore LOL. That area was used for testing several times.

Jerry wins! They may not have been made at home but you still made them - does that count fellas?
SOCOMII,
Back in the fifties the military developed tactical nukes which were basically a nuke fired out of an artillery piece. Jerry was involved in making the warheads which is why he doesn't own flashlights - his soft green glow makes them unnecessary :)

Got a DVD about underground nuclear testing, simply amazing the destructive power of an "average" thermonuclear device!

Whats kind of funny about the w79 atomic round is that most stories say it was added to the US arsenal around 1980. My assembly team was active 1969 to 1971. I had to be rated at top security level to go to school for that baby. It was kept pretty quiet that we had such a round for the 8 inch gun the first year I was into it. I was deployed to Viet Nam with the understanding that my team MAY BE NEEDED there, even though nukes were not supposed to be in country. Good old government hog wash.
Average yield was 20 kilo ton out of a shell 8 inch diameter by about 3 feet high.

I was attached to a standby reserve unit for 5 years after I got discharged with an emergency call up rider. I could have been recalled at any time if needed. Because of that it was necessary to keep all info to myself for years.

I had alot of fun with dry ice bombs, a loud noise but no smoke, heat or flames. It can really screw with your roommates' heads. Made one with saltpeter and sugar, then made my friends think I was crazy by eating the explosive leftovers. Put a thermite grenade on the hood of a car and watched it melt all the way through the engine. Ah, yes, the good old days.

BAsically ingredients were :
Vinegar and soda powder in a gas tight bottle. Let the pressure out! Loosen the lid and chuck on the ground! Nice lil rockets we made! Although the stench is disgusting!
Thought id relive this thread!
Any body got any other suggestions for a budding pyro??

sorry but I am not at liberty to discuss any explosions that i may or may not have been a part of. just for the record, i was at a crowded shopping mall when that one went off at the neighbors house, and there are many witnesses to testify to my whereabouts.

Working on my grandfather's
farm, I learned about carbide bombs. Let me explain some things you mightfind useful.
When calcium carbide is exposed to air and water it produces a gas
that will kill small animals. Farmers often pour it down gopher, rat, or
groundhog holes, then dump in some water and put a rock over the hole.
The animal is gassed to death.
Some of the nastier kids used to place amounts of carbide into the
toilets at our school. The idea was to place the carbide bomb in the toilet,
leave a lighted cigarette on the seat, and run like hell. The carbide would
combine with the water to produce a huge cloud of noxious gas, which
would explode when it hit the lighted cigarette the perpetrators left behind.
This little homemade bomb did more damage than an M80.

Last year, we set off 3/4 stick of dynamite in my aunt's backyard. The white shock wave knocked over a plastic chair sitting about 15-20 yrds away. And cracked a glass sitting beside the chair. :D
And...about 2 years ago I mixed 3 M-80's into one and added .40 oz. of extra black powder. Straped it to a lava-lamp sitting on a stump. Ran behind a tree for protection from glass shards. We measured glass 1/2 inch deep in the tree bark.
I'm making a few plans for next project.

mine was when i had very bad flatulence, singed the hairs on my hairy ass it did i can tell ya.
lmao
once on nov 5th,we had these rockets, called boom rockets (all they did was go up and go bang),we was in a friends back yard, and decided to let one off,but we had no pipe to place it in,
foolishly we decided to stick it in the soil, and light the blue touch paper
it didnt go up,it stayed where it was
the bang was that powerful,it smashed the window on the shed, smashed all the terracotta pots, and shook the contents of the nearby kitchen.
if he had a pond the fish would have been dead, thats for sure

I'm normally not one to share this kind of info, but what the heck, i'm in a good mood...
@ New years i had made a set of mortar bombs *yes, i'm working on getting my Pyro license, so this is legal for me*, some that made pretty flowers and colours when launched, and 2 that where filled with a batch of my own nitrate mix and some nitroglycerin drenched black powder.
One of them was set off *remotely* buried under 6 feet of dirt, and the second whent into an already charred and damaged porta pottie (looked a bit like this one : http://www.rentalsite.com/Images/RSNewCats/NewImages/ByID/45.jpg ).
Needless to say, we ended up with a big hole in the ground with the first one, and the porta pottie...
Well, let's say only a few bits of the bottom where left.
Sadly, i don't have any pics, as the cam we used got ripped to shreds in the second blast.
But that's gonna be different this year :-)

It won't be videos, rather a set of pictures.
We used an old photo cam to snap a series of pictures in sequence, but as stated, the thing got whiped out by some shrapnell from the last blast... which is why i used a remote detonation in the first place.
Safety first.

Quote: was just wondering whats the biggest home made explosion youve ever made?
I think it was last night with my girl friend heh heh heh.Anyway we tryed to get a tree stump out of the yard when I was younger so my step dad decided to make a stick of dynamite to blow it out.We used a toilet paper roll capped it with wax(hot then formed to fit)an filled her with gun powder(I think that's what it was) needless to say it made a huge explosion!
Unfortunately it did not blow the damn stump out but it did some damage.
*edit*Sorry if that's weak compaired to you alls lol.I love fireworks.
