I'd burn majority of my 8x rated media at 8x like:
Ty-g02/MCC-003/Ritek-R03/Yuden000-T02
Now I've got 4 benq burners,if I left the speed setting at max, they will burn my 8x media at 12x and 16x. Accidentally overburned a few,and they turned out ok. Thank goodness for the overburn protection of qsuite to take care of that issue.I also use solidburn to keep my errors down.
I also burn MCC-004 at 8x and 12x. Too many crc errors when burning them at 2.4x and 4x. They were designed to be burned faster.

It seems as if Sony D21s have mixed opinions. They recently went on sale at my Best Buy, $25 for 100 DVDs, and I'd like to pick them up if the burns are quality. Does anyone else have any input as to how D21s perform? I always see Sony media listed as First class but those charts are most likely from Sony's MIJ Yuden days....

I've burned several 100 of the Sony D21 discs. Still pretty decent. All my scans are in the mid 90's. Just a tad less than MCC-004 and Ty-g03,but pretty decent. This includes both taiwanese and Japanese sony D21.Only coasters I got was with my backup pc re-setting.
25 cents each? Well worth it!!!!!
Now after burning some Fuji +16x which code as Prodisc R05-000,those sony kicks their butts. Scans with prodisc have been 33 and 75.
I'll also rate Sony D21 above Ritek-P16 and Ricohjpn-r03.

Saugmon you've come through for me once again. :D Thanks!
Is there a good guide you know of that explains how to perform & read DVD scans?
I'd like to perform my own scans to see how my various media fares in my burner.

If you got Nero, go to test drive/extra/ and click on disc quality test. That's the test I use,and set it for 4x and start. Takes about 20 mins.
I don't know of any guides, but pretty simple. I don't pay much attention to PIE errors, they will be high. I mainly look for the PIF errors. Those are what will shoot down your score. Score starts out at 99.
The worst errors are PO errors, which I haven't encountered any.
Other test programs are:
K-probe for lite-on drives
Plextools for plextor drives
Dvdinfopro for a lot of drives
Nero's disc quality scan may not work for all drives. Same goes for Dvdinfopro.

I'm surprised the thread I started some time ago is still alive. Since then I've switched to MCC004 and now my problem is trying to determine the best firmware to burn them, but that's another story. I still have left about 18 of them which I use sometimes depending on the importance of my backup. I know many say you have to burn them @4X for best results, but I've noticed my BenQ 1640 burns them best @8X rather than @4X. I've never tried to burn them @6X though.
If I always hear voices surrounding me, does it mean Im crazy or that I hear in Dolby 5.1?

I'll agree with you on that hermes. Gotta burn these MCC-004 at least 8x for best performance.
2.4x- Too many crc errors. Avoid that speed.
4x- high PIF errors
8x- Scored the best
12x- Scored just a hair lower than the 8x,and heck of a lot better than 4x.

@Saugmon
You are right about the MCC burning speeds, but when I mentioned 4X and 8X, I was talking about the SONYD21...

SonyD21:
I have to burn these at 4x for scores in the mid 90's. That's the only thing I could complain about SonyD21. Pretty good, despite that!

That's weird since you and I both have BenQ drives. Maybe it's because mine are Sony Coded but were made in Japan. Humm. Interesting...
