Since I can't get TY locally, I'm always looking for Sony MIJ sales. A few months ago I took advantage of a K-Mart sale on Sony's 8X (YUDENT000-T02) and bought 100 of them. Well, I was out of media and burning season just started again. LOL.

I was in WalMart today and decided to check the media aisle. There I discovered Sony 50 Disc spindles MIJ at an affordable price and grabbed one. The thing is I didn't read the label carefully and they turned out to be 16x Sony D21 MIJ. By the time of this posting I have burned two of them flawlessly with a Quality score of 98 so I'm relieved they are not crap. My question now is what about longevity? Does anyone have info on this?

If I always hear voices surrounding me, does it mean Im crazy or that I hear in Dolby 5.1?

I've burned a few hundred SonyD21. These are on the taiwanese and japanese spindles of sony +1x-16x accucore. Pretty decent media.

According to my scans,4x burning seems to have the fewest errors. 8x is okay, but I wouldn't dare try 12x or 16x burning with these.

With the confusion of country they were manufactured in,look for the white octogon spacer inside the spindle. These should yield the Tys.
Round/gray ones will yield sony MID code-D21

Kmart has fujis on sale this week, and reports of taiyo yudens.I don't know if the spacer theory works for fuji.

I don't know about the longevity.

Well, my spacer is white and they coded SONY D21. Then again, they are 16X instead of 8X or maybe is just a geography thing. Bottom line is I think I'm gonna have to spend a bit more and order some TY's from the web. Shipping charges are going to kill me, but at least I'll know I'm getting the real thing.

PS I burned them at 8X and they turned out fine. I never burn higher than that.

Hopefully yours are better than mine.Mine showed great burns but the test I've been doing is playing them 4 or 5 times if I don't start getting pixelation or momentary freezing I consider myself lucky . I've got about a 5 to 10 % sucess ratio so far. Thank god for the kids and there cartoons.I bought them at Staples on a clearance $ 16.00 for 2 packs of 50 at the time thinking they'd be like the 8x MIJ being Ty's I would have kissed and hugged the X wife till I id'd them and then burn't them.Just can't win when I think it's too good to be true.Good luck Chris I did tryburnin from 2x to 12x and came out the best at 6x. Just very few so far have held up. I just gotta stick with the Ty's and Verbs. Just need a decent deal on the Ty's Chris

I too tried these 1-16x Sony +r. I had bought 6 50 packs at Office Depot a couple of months ago when they were on sale for $14.99. Made the mistake of using the last of my Ty branded Sony 1-8x and opened a pack of the 16x (unwittingly did not pay attention to the fact that it was different media). Burned 10 disks before I realized that I was only burning coasters! I checked 5 of the 10 and had to throw away 4 of the 5 I checked. I just threw the 9 in the garbage (kept the one good one - ugh) and returned all 6 spindles to Office Depot for a store credit. Since I can no longer find the Sony 8x around where I live, I'm went back to ordering Ty's from Supermediastore. I was however caught in the unfortunate state of having no blank media and having to wait for my shipment to arrive. Began having pangs of burning withdrawal pains! Won't let that happen again!

SonyD21 are decent. Not ty/verbatim/or hitachi good, but ok.

Here's a scan at a backup burned at 4x in my benq 1650:

Just gotta keep the burn speed at 4x on my BenQ-1650.

Thanks Saugmon. That's not a bad scan/score. I kind of expected somewhat nasty scans. They are not TY's, but scans look better than the Maxell's (Riteks G03) I use for trivial things. I guess I'm gonna use them for not-so-important things and in case of emergency. There's still the unanswered question about longevity...

Yeah like saugmon my burns at different speeds & different burners were 94 to 98% But as they get played they start breaking up a bit. Mine are the MIJ Mine don't give me much confidence for longevity. But then again if some poor quality gets by from a manufacturer I'm definitely sure to get them.{ me thinks it's the X put a curse on me] Good luck to all. Saugmon hope this didn't sound like a dispute was just statin whats happened on mine. Chris

Chris:

Sounds more like your stand alone player is a little picky. Players will give variable relults-per media code.Especially the players with a lot of wear and tear on them.

SonyD21 are made in both taiwan and japan. They'll have the round/gray foam spacers.I'm waiting for those sony Yudenooo-T03's.

Heres what I came up with 2 out of 3 went bad after playing 3 or 4 times, the Norcent is the only one that hasn't so far. But I 've taken it a step furthur and reduced the disc space to 4300 on one & 4200 on the other and so far are playing fine on the Phillips & Denin. The 6x & 4x were just about exact quality scans 8x started dropping.I'm thinkin with what I've got is the dye spread is thin at the edge of the disc on some of these. Saugmon you and the Doc have more knowledge than I, does this seem plausible? I've burn't these Sony discs on the Beng Lite On Plextor Samsung & Nec with the same results so I know it's not the burners and the Norcent player was the main one that it showed up on.I'll see what happens with these decreased disc space. maxxjulie thanks for your invaluable input. wykoh: You may be ok? Hopefully you didn't max burn them.

For a good test on those SonyD21 backups:

Use your normal ripping program/process. Re-rip a couple of those backup discs onto your harddrive. Successfully ripped to harddrive-OK
If not: CRC error/s.

very much so actually :) when dealing with media that is sometimes "less than definitive in terms of quality" a good "check" to see if you can get more out of them is to reduce the backup target space, much like you have done, and burn at slower speeds~ :)

this works particularly well in resolving some of the MINOR issues often times associated with questionable media, i would use saugmon's "test" of re-ripping your backups to see if you can get it back onto your harddrive successfully~ as he mentioned, if you CAN, then you should be oK, if not, inevitably a CRC error is a pretty strong indication that your original backup on this media was "less than stellar" :) (since you have such a variety of drives to try this on, it is more than likely not a burner/drive issues, but rather an issue with compatibility with that particular Sony media...slowing down the burn speed and reducing the target output could be your solution using this media) :) good luck

Interesting suggestion. So do you recommend any particular ripper? I mostly use DVD Decrypter and/or Fab Decrypter...

I use DVD Shrink for all my ripping. With the newer encryptions that it won't handle,I just activate AnyDVD and no problemo.Rip with shrink, and autoburn with Nero. A heck of a lot quicker than using dvd decrypter's file mode.

Dvd decrypter is a more aggressive ripper, when it comes to getting through crc errors. I also have more playback issues using dvd decrypter's burn engine,as apposed to nero's burn engine.

Try dvd decrypter's ISO read mode, since backups are already compressed to size, and no encryption. Too many errors,or errors in the wrong spot= CRC errors, and will be more difficult. Also means your backups have something seriously wrong with them.

That's weird. I really noticed an improvement when I switched from Nero to ImgBurn which is the updated DVD Decrypter burn engine.

IMGburn is updated, like you said. DVD Decrypter is not updated so Nero May Have caught up but not to imgburn, although this is a IMOP statement that could be argued all day, I get my best results with Imgburn.

After a long weekend of testing and burning with all the different programs I use. It did come down to target space being the issue. Anything above 4300 gave me the bad ones And the burns had to stay between 4x & 6x. So I lost nothing and gained a lot of knowledge from this. I'm so use to burnin the Verbs and Ty's at basically the same settings that I thought would be the same for other Media gave me a slap and a wake up call.Saugmon thanks for the info on re rippin to the hard drive. And thanks everyone for the input. Well now its time to go into the forums. Happy Burnin Chris
