could someone answer me a quick question about verbatims? i had been buying MIJ maxells that come out as maxell002 (thats about the best media locally available to me) but i was at best buy recently and they had +R verbatims on sale. but they were made in taiwan. i have never bought verbs before, i was under the impression that the ideal choice was media made in japan. does this count for verbs too? or should i head back to best buy?

A rootkit is a piece of malware - a trojan, virus, spyware, etc. - that operates at a low-level within an operating system to hide it's existence. In this case, Sony's rootkit, called XCP, was a copy-protection mechanism release last fall which installed itself if you placed a copy-protected CD in your computer. Not only did the rootkit hide itself, but it's purpose was to interfere with or disable ripping programs and CD/DVD burning. There is some info in the Glossary section on XCP.

Sony's XCP rootkit also qualifies as spyware because it sent back to Sony what you play on your computer. To make matters worse, once it was discovered, Sony released a removal tool that created even more security problems.

Sony settled one class-action lawsuit with a lame offer to replace the copy-protected discs with non-XCP ones. Of course, the people who went for this got screwed because if they rejected the settlement and pursue dtheir cases separately, there is the potential to collect some massive awards out of this one.

-Do you believe you own your computer and shouldn't be told what you can run and do? Then say *NO* to Microsoft Vista!
-Since half the questions here involve media problems, here ya go: Only use Verbatim or Taiyo-Yuden discs (get your TYs from Rima.com, not Supermediastore or meritline). Forget the rest, no matter what "brand" they sell under. Always burn at 4x speed regardless of the speed rating of this discs or your drive. If you have burn problems with these then you have to update your drive's firmware. For double-layer discs, only use Verbatim DVD+R DL and burn them at 2.4x speed.

As a rule, you can't go wrong with Verb, period. I recently bought two 50-packs MIT and they ID out as MCC (Mitsubishi), not to be confused with CMC. You'll note the DL Verbs are made in Singapore. Still, they're top notch. BTW, they're on sale for $1.79 each - http://www.supermediastore.com/verbatim-double-layer-dvd-8x-95166...

Check Wal-Mart or Sam's for Sony MIJ (usually 8x). They ID out as TY.

thanks alot rcm999, appreciate your help. i guess i'll head back to best buy to take advantage. i had them in my hand yesterday but i wasn't sure about the MIT thing. so i figured i'd do a little more research, now i'll guess i'll drive back an hour and get them.

on another note: with the price of gas here at around $3.09 a gallon and figure in about 140 miles (roundtrip) at 15 miles a gallon ,thats 28.737 dollars in gas (if i did my math correctly LOL!). do you think it would still be worth it?

p.s. yes i live in the sticks, and i hate credit cards.

Not sounding short here, but is it worth it to you? You could use your debit card and have the discs shipped to you, or stock up while you're there. Also, you may want to pick up on the 20-pack of Verb DL for $34.99. Under $2 per is a good price IMHO. Anything you can do to spread out the fuel costs will help your cause.

If it were me and I wanted them, heck I'd do it. You can't really put a price on top quality, but its value is priceless.

Best of luck.

yeh, i'll just make another day of it, and find some other things to do while i'm there in the big city. my local wal-mart has verb DL in the clearance aisle. has been there for a couple a months. i've been taking a gamble and waiting for the price to drop again. but i guess its possible that there as low as they are gonna get. i've been keeping count and they have only sold the ones that i have bought. i check a couple times a week.
