Ok I am having this problem on both of my pc's. I am not however shrinking straight from the dvd itself. I use decrypter to put the dvd onto my hdd (250gig sataII with 3gig memory) then I use shrink to make it fit onto a blank dvd. Just recently both my pc's are taking a long time to even open shrink and to shrink any of my movies. All my other programs are opening and running just fine, its just shrink that is acting really weird.

I tried all the suggestions (reg cleaner, virus, defrag, etc etc) and nothing is working. I have gone from 7-8 minutes up to 22 minutes and I dont know what else to change. The only thing I have installed lately is a game and that should have nothing to do with shrink.

You're sure you don't have deep analysis checked off as one of the quality options?

Go back to an earlier restore point and see if DVD Shrink runs OK again. If so, one of the programs added lately is causing a conflict.

Have you tried uninstalling and then reinstalling Shrink?

Does Nero Recode run slow as well? Nero has a free trial:

I'll also state the obvious, are you sure you aren't encoding titles that require more compression? A title requiring 40% compression might take 23 minutes or longer. One that requires no compression will take 6-9 minutes when reauthoring.

Yes I am sure I have deep analysis unchecked

I did a Norton Ghost restore and now shrink is acting just fine, but I cant think of any programs that I installed lately that would conflict with it.

Yes I had tried that and it didnt work.

I have never realy liked Nero but I guess I could give it a try sometime.

Where does it show the compression %?

Where does it show the compression %?

In either Full Disk or Reauthor mode, the compressed level is shown under the Compression Settings tab. For example, a compression of 63% would mean the resulting file will be 63% the size of the original or a compression of 37%.

I doubt this is your problem since it is unlikely all the titles you've been backing up would require the same high levels of compression. Some would likley have needed less compression than others unless you always shrink the full disk and not just the main title.

Well as I stated above after I did the norton ghost shrink worked just fine, but now it has started doing the same thing again and I haven't installed any new software besides games.

I REALY dont want to do another ghost because that last time I lost a few important things I had forgot to backup.

Any other ideas??

I really don't have any other ideas. I would try Nero Recode just to see if the slowdown is apparent there also. The same programmer wrote both programs.

Are you ripping first to your hard disk and then encoding in Shrink or are you encoding directly from the DVD in the DVD drive? If the latter are you sure your drive hasn't slipped back into PIO transfer mode?

Otherwise, at this point I would backup the data to another drive, reformat the system drive, and reinstall the OS and other software. I do this myself a couple times a year to try to keep a minty fresh system. As a result I only end up with software installed I really need and use which is always a good thing. I do Ghost the entire drive weekly for backup.

Ok I decided just to make a seperate OS just for dvd/movie work and thats ALL I am going to put on it. So far everything is working just fine with shrink going at its normal rate so I dont know what it would be on my other OS.

I wouldn't even hazzard a guess not knowing what's loaded on the system. It's likely a driver conflict somewhere.

Well I think I figured out what was causing the conflict. I took off zone alarms antivirus checker since I have a seperate one and now everything loads alot faster. I also ended up having conflicts with Media Center (for encoding ONLY) and Vista, but the two OS's were having problems with each other so I ended up taking MC off and now I have to fix Vista......just to get shrink back up to speed too.....haha.
