I think you'd be better off having someone else do the modding for you.

Why is that? If you can't tell the difference between SATA and PATA, the modding process will for sure be over your head.
I'm sure you take offense to that, but in all honesty you should accept your limitations and work with them.

The only "off brand" network adapter for the PS2 that I ever came across was one that plugged into the USB port. I never heard anything good about it and besides this wont work with what you want to be able to do, which is install an IDE HDD also known as PATA (not SATA) to your PS2. It was years back when I saw it ... googled for it just now ... cant find it. It is starting to sound like you might want to search out a pro to help you with this project.
Also the network adapters on ebay or official Sony ones, just used.

chrsprfft,
that was a bit hostile. But just in case you are still here.
To be perfectly honest if i had a choice of buying a used & premodded Xbox, or a modded PS2 then the Xbox wins hands down.
but of course modding your V4 will be cheaper.
The chip would be around $45 depending on where you get it and what you get. Then you have to pay shipping to a moding site which is about $15 each way (insured priority mail) so there is another $30.
Then there is the hard drive $80 or so. Then there is the price of modding it which will run between $35 and $50.
so total your looking at about $125 not counting the hard drive.
A premodded used Xbox is $190-$220 depending on the chip.
Then you just buy a hard drive and slap it in and your set. Format it with Slayer 2.7 and your Xbox is all set up and ready (other then networking it to your PC of course)
But the Xbox can do so much more and so much easier than a PS2

But is Xbox able to play the PS2 games like their RPG's when modded? That's the reason why I never went Xbox because it's not my style of games (mecha or gun games etc..).

No. It will not play PS2 games. But each system only has a handful of games that were only released for that system,
but Xbox has plenty of RPG games that people loved. For example:
A few Star Wars games
Elder Scrolls games
Jade Empire
Phantasy Star
Bauldur's Gate
Lord Of The Rings games
D&D Hero's
and i am sure some others, RPG is not my thing really.
But the amount of things you can do with an Xbox just make it heads above the PS2. I own both and was a huge PS2 fan. But after getting the Xbox i just started getting all my games for it instead as i use it much more. Streaming movies and music wireless from My Pc, playing all my DivX files, plus all of my games made it the main unit in my house (until of course my 360 gets back from being flashed)

The only thing a modded Xbox does better then a PS2 is emulators for vintage consoles and this is only because the Xbox has a stronger coder base in that area then the PS2 scene. However dont get me wrong there are a few emulators that work very well with the PS2.
-You can play your Dixv movies and mp3's from an HDD or stream them from your PC (wirelessly if you choose) with SMS on the PS2.
-With HDL you can play your back-up games from HDD just like Xbox.
-With ULE you can manage your PS2 files, media files, PS2 apps, as well as FTP into your PS2
-With a Crystal Chip in your PS2 you can even have the benefit of IGR (in game reset) just like the Xbox.

XBox Media Center (XBMC) is a fantastic program for modded XBoxes. Couple that with emulators and other programs and you have a single box that is really hard to beat. The PS2 may have programs that replicate much of that functionality, but I think the XBox does so in a much more sophisticated package.
In my mind, you get a modded PS2 for playing PS2 games, other functionality is more of an afterthought.

even though PS2 can do some of the things an Xbox can. They are not nearly as easy. An Xbox has everything you need just by having a mod chip and an auto instller disc. Once you have those two things your xbox is set up to do anything you want without needing extra software to do it.
for example:
XBMC is a full media center that will do it all. Stream media from the PC, Play shoutcast radio stations, Play your music and movies and i am sure other things i have not even gotten into yet.
Trainers are far superior and much easier to use then any cheat system on the PS2
FTP is easier and requires nothing more than a modded system.
programs for Xbox such as XBMC, DVD2Xbox, and all the dashborads are updated pretty often and it is easy to update them on your Xbox.
Dashboards themselves are much better than anything the PS2 has and can easily be customized through editing of the main file. Plus have so many skins for them i will not even begin to count.
With online system like XBconnect and Xlink Kai you have nice options for your online gaming. Not to mention Xbox Live which can get you game maps and updates (even if you do have to buy them)
Even though it is a pay service PS2 has nothing like Xbox Live Marketplace.
Xbox games ALL work on the hard drive, or at least i have not found one yet out of the hundred or so i have that did not.
plus you can play online from the hard drive as well.
as stated emulation on Xbox is far better than PS2
the one thing that is easier on PS2 is backing up games.
i have owned and been a big PS2 fan for a while. It is a great gaming system. But i have not known one person who has owned both a modded PS2 and a modded Xbox that will tell you that the PS2 is a better system.

Not saying one is better then the other, yes a modded xbox is a great system, but a modded PS2 is just as good as the xbox. As I stated already the only thing the xbox does better then the PS2 is emu's. When you use the combination of ULE, HDL and SMS you have everything XBMC has. FTP with ULE is extremely simple. You mention somthing about "auto installers", chips like the CC2.0 has megapacks which are the equivalent of the Xbox auto installers, making things just as easy. With chips like the CC2.0 you don't have to use services like Xlink Kai as you can use Sonys own server to go online with your games. You mention cheats and trainers, this can easily be accomplished with the PS2 as well with apps like ARMax or Codebreaker, you can even find the hacked/cracked versions of both and boot the elfs with out any disc if you have a good chip.
Don't get me wrong I have a modded xbox and it does get used more when as a media center then a game console, but seeing how this is a PS2 section of AD I find if funny that when people come here asking how to do this kind of thing with their PS2 some of you try and send them down the road to an Xbox solution.
Have fun!

Not to keep thread crapping, but the XBOX is more advanced in it's capabilities. Modding can be done with an exploit (yes like the PS2), a chip, or flashing the BIOS themselves, and chips are a LOT easier to install in an xbox.
Yes, all those apps can mimic the functionality of XBMC, but you have to run each one as a program. XBMC has a built-in FTP server, and allows you to browse pictures while listening to streaming music, videos, etc.
Plus, XBMC has got a sweet web interface. I can control everything about my box in another room with my PSP.
Now, yes I am an XBOX fanboy. But I've just recently got into PS2 modding, so my opinions might change once I get everything configured.
Just my 2 cents.

glad you enjoy your Xbox. Once you figure out all of the things you can do with it, other than just play games, you will enjoy it even more. I did not want to sound like the PS2 is not a good system, because it is. BUt like above, having to run all of those seperate programs to FTP, play movies and music and all that is just too much of a hassle for me. My Xbox does it all just by turning it on, everything i need is already there.

LOL your so easy to crack, but really who cares about your Xbox posts, the question never pertained to that. If anything you show your "fanboy" nature here with your continual "Xbox is better then PS2" ass kissing hahaha.
Anyway this thread is old news and keeps getting brought back up just cuz a few like to stir up trouble, which I must agree is very enjoyable to do from time to time as well, especially when you pop off like a firecracker for no good reason.
I will now go back to reseting my PS2 ... damn what a hassel.

"ya they have the off brand ps2 network adapters on ebay for 30 dollars cheaper than the official ones.would i be better off modding a xbox? sopposedly less hasle"
and as for ps2modgod, all you do is come in here quoting posts and adding smart remarks trying to start things. I on the other hand was here for thread 1 trying to help someone.

Oh yeah thats right your the afterdawn savior, I keep forgetting that. As I have stated before (and will do once again) You are the only one that takes offense to these posts. Why.... I don't know, maybe your insecure?
The fact here is that the original question had nothing to do with the Xbox. All I have done is to bring to light that you can do everything the Xbox can with your PS2 and the ONLY thing the Xbox does better is emus.
Dont try and label me a "fanboy" as I also have an Xbox that gets used equally as much as the PS2. XBMC is an amazing work of homebrew coding. But for the people that don't realize the PS2 has all the same capability's .. they are of course done in a much different manner then the Xbox as they are worlds apart in the complexity of there coding base (the xbox being childes play compared to the PS2). Why me bringing this info to this thread would offend anyone is beyond me. Maybe you think I'm leaching off your l33t facade that you may believe you possess here at AD. Keep in mind this is a diverse forum unlike TM where you all pat yourselves on the back with every righteous post.
So to hopefully put an end to this childishness maybe we should keep on topic. This has basically turned into an Xbox vs. PS2 thread when that was never the intent.
So here I wil start that off....
Did you know that with a modchip like the CC2.0 SLE you can reboot the PS2 with the In Game Rest (IGR) feature so you don't even have to get off your lazy ass to hit reset in order to boot a different app/game? Amazing!!!!
Oh yeah and Steimy aways remember ..... HAVE FUN!!
