Sovmish, actually Linux install in PS3 is able to read ext HDD with FAT32, EXT3 and NTFS format. Its only that you are not able to write on the NTFS format only and for FAT32, there's a file limitation of 4GB.

prinzz, you are booting up from "PS3" or from "Other OS"?
If I'm not wrong, by booting up PS3, it only recognise USB keyboard and USB mouse and if you want to use the HDD on PS3, you have to boot up from the "Other OS" option in System Setting, of course you must have Fedora or Yellow Dog installed as the "Other OS".
By using Linux, it should be able to detect the EXT3 HDD you connect to the PS3.
Anyone please correct me if I'm wrong... cos I'm also learning... :)

Your PS3-System can handle USB HD. But only Fat32 formated.

i'm booting directly from the system. I've been reading other threads and they say its possible to boot directly from the system without installing any other os. so before i install any other os i wanted to see if what they said about booting from the system is true. So far no luck. I read on game hack that after reformatting in fat32 which i did already you need to create folders for movie, pictures, etc and this will get the system to recognize the ext hdd. i haven't tried that yet

I guess by booting up in PS3 OS, you are able to use the ext. HDD in FAT32 format for Music, Videos, photos etc. but the file have to be not more than 4GB size.
If you're using it to backup your game ISO, maybe you got to think again as most of the PS3 games will be more than 4GB which means that FAT32 is out of the question.

I dont see why you can't just hook up an external HDD via usb and have the PS3 recognize it that way? It works with storage media, So I think properly formatted and manually adding directory folders, it should work! I haven't tried it yet but that was my next project! I have added music files and video files and the only way for it to be read was to make a folder named video, music etc. pretty easy!!

I have a external hdd from a laptop which i plugged into my ps3. To get it to work was a bit of a problem though. My hdd is plugged in through a USB which uses 2 ports, one for power the other for data transfer. First
i have to plug in one to get it to power up, then i plug in the other and unplug the power, then replug in the power, then it finally recognises it. Sounds confusing i know.

possibly yes depending on size of drive. a customer's 20gig laptop doesn't have that problem so above that does but haven't tried drives between 20 & 40gig capacities. just know that my 40 does & the 20 didn't.
