You got a Wii yesterday, or got the modchip yesterday?

2 questions on the mod.
is this the bottom of the optical drive?, if so is the drive on a standard ide or sata interface?
if so chances are its based off of a retail slot loading dvd drive, you could try to get that drive model (providing there is some sort of id marks on it) and force flash the wii drive's firmware on it. (there are many tutorials on how to copy optical drive firmware off of the drive right on this site, just search)
most of the slot loading drives are made by pioneer, and the laptop ones by panasonic.
but its probably easier to try to solder to the studs on the chip first
these are just my thoughts on it, these are just possible suggestions and should be treated as such.
Wish it was that simple. There would be no need for any chips if that was the case. There are many security measures in place to prevent you from doing that. The developers of the different chips exhaustively explored those options. You're welcome to spend the time and money to discover this for yourself if you want to though.

they arent so bad. I personally use the dremel method, its quick and I can get a good connection this way. Just have to be careful doing it.

Has anyone released a video yet of the chip modification in progress? I wouldn't mind seeing how it goes down...

Is there a way to check if your wii is the unmoddable version or not? My friend told me that it depends on the serial number of the wii system you bought?

Seriously?!?! If you follow the link posted more than once in this thread you will find your exact question addressed, in detail.

It is actually not that difficult. As I said I got my first "unmoddable" a few days ago. I got 5 lu314s from toysrus and one lu315. the 315 was clipped. it took an extra 30 minutes. you don't really cut with the dremel, you simple grind down the surface of the chip. I used the drum grinder attachment on the dremel, an 8 watt iron, low heat solder and finished it with epoxy. Since the connections are pretty close you want to avoid balling the solder which could short with any thermal expansion. that precaution and a finish with epoxy and you should be ok.

I live in Calgary, one of my customer brought in one of the ones with the Clipped legs last night. Took me extra 20 minutes to sand down the chip and install was easy as breeze.
At least these aren't the rumored D2C chips.

there are a couple of lists floating around of serial numbers
eg: http://forums.maxconsole.net/showthread.php?t=48279
But you can't be certain until you open it up.

Do we simply reconnect the exposed legs (once dremeled) of the chip to the solder pads on the circuit board or do we solder a wire directly from each exposed leg on the chip to the modchip and bypass the traces. Anyone know if the traces on the board are still connected?
Also, same question on the power connections for the modchip. Are the locations prescibed by the modchips still connected or does that need direct connections to the alternate traces as well?
Thanks!!

The power and Ground connection are still working.
If you use the original points you will need to solder a wire from the exposed IC leg down to where that leg connects to the trace.
It would be easier to just solder the wire right to the exposed leg once you have modified the chip.

is this for all the modchips or just the wiikey?

Most Modchips use the same soldering points so this will effect most out there at this time.

Impressive job connecting to those almost invisible chip legs. Having said that you could have skipped jumping those disconnected pads on the board, and just put those three points straight from chip to WiiKey.
Thanks for the pics...

I'm definitely a newbie here but.....
How do all those wires not short each other out? Am I missing something?
Otherwise it's definitely a better solution than the dremel and probably the technique I'll use! (Once my warranty runs out,if no one comes out with a chip to address this situation.)

The wires I used have an enamel coating to insulate them.

Its coated wire. Although it looks copper in colour, it has an enamel coating, thats stripped back at the connection points only.

Yes I could have skipped the disconnected pads, but i assumed that its probably a multilayered board and that the pads might also serve some other purpose. So I choose to wire it the way the board layout intended. Haha I knew someone would ask about that.

Nice Job!
Where can I get some of that wire? I only have the local Radio Crap stores that seem to be useless.

Well, I used wire that I use everyday at work. However, you can buy a spool from www.electrosonic.ca (do a search for belden magnet wire). Problem is it only comes by the spool and its like $25 plus shipping. If people are interested, I could put some lengths on ebay for a much cheaper price.
