lol yea, i think im going to start modding mine, already have my wiikey...but i would rather get a homebrew modchip (cant find cheap shipping and cheap PIC12F629 chips). Im kinda scared modding this tho, but i have dont quite a few PS2 mods before so i think i can handle this. Thanks for posting the picures of the install.

Anyone know the score with the D2C chip? I spoke to modchipfitters in the UK and they told me my Wii probably has the D2C chip and they wouldnt be able to mod it. (they are aware of the dremel method for D2B - and they do mod using this method). The serial number of my Wii is LEH127xxxxx

Apparently, from their experience, any with a serial of LEH123xxxx require the dremel method, but the newer ones like mine may have the D2C chip and not currently moddable at all.

Could anyone confirm this? or point me in the direction of another thread containing similar info.

@xbox_ian

The only way to be 100% sure is to open up your Wii and check which 1 you have. It shows the chipset number on top of the chipset itself.

If it is D2C then you are out of luck at this time. There is currently no Modchip compatible with it.

There was a previous thread that I had read that had a member with a D2B chipset and their serial number was higher then another member that had a D2C chipset. So going by the serial number might not always work. As I stated above to be 100% sure look at the chipset itself.

Here is how I handle these cut chips without grinding...

Strip some 30gauge wire and flux it and tin it really well.
Apply flux to the cut area on the chip.
Steadily hold the wire vertically so that the wire makes contact with the solder pad on the board and the stub where the leg was cut.
Apply your iron on the wire pressing it onto the stub/chip.
Cut extra wire, install mod chip as normal and test.
Once verified as working apply some hot glue just to make sure nothing moves.

Just so YOU know, you are very lucky if thats your G2B.
mine had no stubs sticking out.
Yours was probly already mounted and they cut the legs leaving a stub.
on mine, I think the chip wasn't mounted yet and they moved those 3 legs up and down untill they broke off, because there was NO stub to solder to.

I've done several already with the same method. Although it looks as if there is no contact, there is. If you flux and tin, you can make a nice solid connection.

Another cut job. No grinding required.

*** update ***
(you can see a pictures of my mod on page 3)

OK, I email tech support.
They said mail the mod chip to them and they will send a new one.
Took a week to get there and a week for the new mod chip to show up.
Soldered it in place and turned it on while it was still apart.
the led stopped blinking and went on solid in 3 seconds.
(that means it is working.
unplugged the wii and assembled it.
hooked it up and turned it on, inserted my backup copy and it is working great!

So, it turned out to be a defective mod chip. Hey, it happens !!!

Good luck to all you modders!!!!

I too have a wii with the wires clipped. i can barely see some contacts coming out of the chip and i know that i won't be able to solder such a small connection. Unfortunately i found this out after i ordered my wiikey. Is it even possible to develop a mod chip that works without these contacts? Or even better, to have an update for the wiikey?

Also. After i opened my wii, the news channel could not download any more news even though my internet connection was established and all my wireless settings were the same. Is there a thread on how to fix this? I have searched for it to the best of my abilities

Thanks,

Staples office supplies stores sells a round light with a magnifier in it, the cost is $25.00

here is the link:

http://www.staples.com/webapp/wcs/stores...8&cmArea=SEARCH

I used that light plus a pair of reading glasses and that worked great.

If you don't want to do the mod yourself, search the internet to find modders that you can mail your wii to and they will do it for around $100.00

I did the modding myself with the legs missing, I am 56 years old and as everybody at that age I start shaking, you don't see it in normal life but when you try to weld three wires in a 1/16" that's when you realize it. But I did it and it work fine, I used the grinding method but didn't really used a dremel but I used a small diamond file and a lot of patience, I had to reweld three times before I got it right, the idea is do not overheat the chip or connection, and if you end up with too much solder in the place just remove it before continuing, IF I WAS ABLE TO DO IT AT 56 YEARS OLD AND SHAKING, all you young guys should be able to do it easily, your only problem might be that you want to have it done before starting, just be patient take your time ( even if your Wii stay open for a week ).
Good luck

Here is a link to fix the problem you are having above. This happened due to not turning off WiiConnect24 so if you do any other modification that entails your Wii being disassembled make sure you turn off WiiConnect24.

Thanks for the link larrylje. I am by no means an experienced solderer but I guess if a shaky handed 56 year old could do it, a steady handed 17 year old such as myself could also do it. I already have one of those magnifying glass setups and I'll be practicing on some old electronics I have lying around after i buy a tiny tip for my soldering iron and some flux.

Also is it possible for the wiikey people to provide an update to circumvent this problem? Or even to develop a new chip? I would like to know before i attempt this mod. I have emailed wiikey tech support and haven't heard back yet. I will post their response when it arrives.

It is kinda impossible for Wiikey techs to make a update to fix the problem, n they wouldnt spend the time. The only way they could is if they find a compatible pin or something, but that will change all the codes and soldering points. Also Wiikey tech said they were going to have a update, a little while after they were released , they also said they were almost done. But now on 7-7-07 they said it is now in beta form...blah blah blah...
As with new chips, that would be cool, If they were actual modchips instead of drive chips, then the homwbrew will be more open, and the D2C chips which is one of those currently unmoddable will be moddable.

I've got a question regarding soldering, please don't laugh. What is flux and do i really need it?

I wonder if the new chip from team xecutor will have support for the cut legs or d2c support, then i would definitely have to buy one and maybe give the wiikey to my girlfriend (if her wii is compatible)

Flux is just a paste that make wires/solder stick together more eaisly, for wii with cut pins i would get some. Also like I said ALL CHIPS ARE CURRENTLY DRIVE CHIPS. They use the same pins, and everything, and they are soldered on the Wii Disk Drive, instead of the mobo (like most chips for other game systems) It also uses open source code like Openwii. Dude, its just cut pins. It better than having a real unmoddable D2C chip Wii.

Going back to the flux.
you can buy it at radio shack.
you only need a tiny bit on the spot you want to solder to.
I used a toothpick, just dip the toothpick in the paste then touch the wet end of the toothpick to the pin you are going to solder to.

get electrical\electronic solder like kestors as it has flux in it & get a flux pen to reflow the solder if needed. don't get flux for soldering copper pipes.

has to be copper as you can't solder aluminum. radio shack should have flux core solder for electronics. see if they have 1mm or less outside diameter solder as to thick of solder will cause bridging. get solder wick for just in case if do a solder brige you use the solder wick with the soldering iron to wick up the excess solder. do not use a soldering gun. they might have solder flux or flux pens but not certain on the pens.

The problem actually occurs when you take out the battery. So if your going to disassemble the Wii and take the battery out then I would recommend you turn it off.

It isn't hard to turn it off so why make a big deal about it?

Just turn it off, when your done turn it back on it only takes a few seconds to do.

You don't have to go through that long list of steps everytime, you just have to turn off wiiconnect24 everytime you open your wii. You can do that through the settings menu.
