Seems to me you have one of those wack PS2s that craps out after a couple years... but its ok. There is a way to fix it. There are forums and guides everywhere on the net.
The disc start to spin right...slowly then fast, then it slows then fast again....in that pattern.
This means that the laser cannot read the disc properly. The laser gets weak after a while. So you would have to adjust the white gear...directly behind the disc tray(you can only see it while the tray is out) With my experience, I remember adjusting the gear so that the laser gets high enough to where its almost touching the disc. But you just have to test it out to see how much to adjust for the disc to work...its a guess and check type of process.
Im not gonna go into full detail cuz its hard to explain. But there are guides out there.
This happened to me before too....it sucks.
That will work for the classic DRE but I don't think he has the DRE as of now, as he posted it just barely starts to spin and quits. I think this means that your laser is not lighting up. Try to close the drive without a disc and see if the laser is spinning. If possible take a video of it spinning and e-mail it to me. After you have taken the e-mail I will PM you my email address because it is against the rules to post an email address. I think that when you put the cable to the gear back in you did it wrong.
This most likely means that the laser is not lighting up, thus meaning that the PS2 thinks that there is no disc inside so it doesn't spin it. Try to reinstall the laser. I'll post pics if you want on an easy way to do it.
I think the reason this is happening is because there is this white gear that I read if you spun it around, it would help the laser read the disc better? The problem is, I'm not sure where the white gear was in regards to the silver metal plate that rests against it, thus its at a different angle.
Not really sure how this would make it assume that there's no disc in there, but you know a lot more about this than I do. I can cell-phone-cam the disc partially spinning, but it's really nothing complicated. I insert a disc, the spindle spins for half a second, then quits. If reinstalling the laser fixes that, then pictures are more than welcome!
One more question, if you close the disc tray without a disc can you see the laser light up red? (look from an angle, not directly at it to prevent damage to eyes)
The laser comes out with a screw by the disc tray. Try refitting that cable (If thats the end that came out earlier) and see if it works. Remember, its the black piece then the cable. Tell me if this helps or Ill try to get better pics or a video
Well, I bought a 360 today, and with that purchase, I really don't have the motivation to keep trying to fix this PS2. I put more than ample effort into trying to get it working, but new problems kept arising as soon as an old one was finished.
Either way, thanks for all your help, I truly truly appreciate it. Take care.
