Hey guys,
Basically as simple as the title says. I followed the directions exactly as described on the Chipzone.com guide, and no matter what I do, when I switch the power button over, the reset/eject buttons don't light up. The silver ribbon inside is still attached at both ends, but at the reset/eject end, part of the actual tape is off the blue tab at the very end (if that means anything). I tried to turn it on without any top on, but that's also a no-go.
It's a v4 (fat) PS2 if that helps. I have about 5 games waiting for me to play, so any help would be appreciated. =)
Thanks!
Note: sorry about posting this in two forums... I posted it in the general discussion first, then I saw this forum afterwards. My apologies!

The blue tab at the end of the cable is only to help secure the wire into the board tightly. Since you said that it fell off, the wire may not be securely fastened into the board. Try to take a flat head screwdriver and secure it into the board well. If that doesn't work you can try to check the power board fuse at the bottom. If you need you can buy new parts to the PS2 from
http://www.richspsxparts.com/psx2.html
I just think that the reset/eject cable is not into the board tightly. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the reply,
The silver ribbon itself is still attached on both ends... I was just saying that I saw the very end of the reset/eject side of the silver ribbon was a bit off of the blue tab. I'll try to push the tab in, but otherwise, would I have to go inside the PS2 to fiddle with the other end? I was very careful when switching lids (which is why I'm a tad frustrated), so I'm positive that anything I did was not enough to dislodge it.
However, now that I think about it, I might've pinched the silver ribbon when trying to close the case (it was sticking out where the disc area is). Are there any dire consequences of that?

I don't think that pinching the cable would have any severe consequences. I have done that a few times and just had to straighten it and it worked. I would be sure to check your power board at the bottom of the system and make sure that the fuse in that is still functional. If you are sure that the silver cable is in and the fuse is still fine, it could be that the motherboard fried. I highly doubt this since I have pieces of solder on my PS2 motherboard acting as fuse bypasses with the PS2 fully functioning. I hope this helps. I will post pics about the power supply board if need be.

Well, to be honest, I'm not really a PS2 hardware pro. The Flip Top is insanely easy to install, but other than that, I'm pretty clueless. I'll try straightening out the silver ribbon and such, but if that doesn't work, then we might have to go deeper in.
Thanks again for helping me through this... I *really* don't want to buy another PS2.

something you might want to try is put a flat head screwdriver in the middle of the blue tab and silver eject button and push it lightly to secure it into the board. If this doesn't work I will guide you through other steps to get your PS2 back to life. I also understand how you feel, this is my 3rd PS2. I just got them swapped out for free with extended warranty which for once, I am glad I got.

Alright, I brought my PS2 up here so I can follow directly. I've been fiddling with the silver ribbon now with the PS2 plugged in, and the switch in the on position (incase I do something right and it turns red), but no luck.
It's hard to think that it's the fuse or something, seeing as I didn't even touch those parts during the install. You're sure ALL of the blue doesn't need to be touching the silver ribbon? That's the only thing that I see that might possibly be causing this (then again I have no idea about the innards of a PS2).

The silver cable touching something should not cause a problem. Just to make sure, you might want to put it back in the original case and try to turn it on. I will post pics or a video, whichever you prefer, to help you test the fuses.

Well, I currently have the PS2 without any top on, and I would assume that it would work like this before working with a top on? Are there any specific factors that would contribute to blowing a fuse? Could me even switching the power switch on blow the fuse some how?

It could if you didn't have the reset/eject cable tightly in or if there was a shortage from the cable (this is when pinching it could have caused it but its a 1% chance). To check the fuse flip the PS2 over and remove the board that is there. then there is a fuse on it. Check it with a connectivity tester or see if it is black or burnt out. This could also be caused by plugging it in when its on or working with the PS2 while plugged in.

Well, I found out what the problem was... I was moving my PS2 to a different table and the reset/eject button (along with the ribbon) came right out in my hand. This is also a relief since I know that the fuse is ok. Somehow the ribbon must've dislodged...
Anyways, how do I go about putting it back in? The end that fell out was the end that goes inside the PS2.

Ok so, great news! I put the silver ribbon back in and it turned on! But of course I can't catch a break, so now I'm trying to figure out why when I put my Swap Magic DVD in, it just says "Reading disc..." perpetually.

After some time, I figured out that by saying "perpetually" I really meant "Disc Read Error". It's fine, though, I'm going to follow a guide that has actually been recommended to me by more than one person (http://www.tweak3d.net/joomla/tutorials/hardware-repair/playstation-2-repair).
Thanks again core2kid!

It's great to hear that you got the PS2 to work. Post back telling me if the fix for the laser worked, I'm curious to see how the flip top cases work with games.

Found the reason that I believe to be the cause of the DRE. A very small copper-colored ribbon cable just to the right of the laser was completed unplugged. So I plugged that back in (and it SUCKED trying to do so), and now sure enough my reset/eject buttons don't work. I unplugged the silver ribbon cable at both ends and re-inserted it, but still no luck. I tried unplugging both ends of the silver ribbon cable and re-inserting them, but again no luck (the red light still appears, however).
I'm starting to get extremely frustrated with this and am contemplating just buying a used v4-v7 off eBay for ~$50.

So as of now, the red light comes on but if you hit the reset button or eject button on the PS2 it does nothing?

Try to (again) remove the reset/eject cable completly from the motherboard and reinsert it completly. The cable isnt in fully. It is sending the signal for a light but isnt able to recieve a signal. It may be in crooked.

Well, I've re-inserted it 4 times now, and the actual tape is starting to coming off the blue tab from all the flathead-pushing I've been doing, and the leverage I'm able to achieve is weaker and weaker each time. All a no-go, so I'm going to buy a new silver ribbon from RichsPSXParts.com for $8 and see if that works. If not, I have no choice but to buy a new PS2. :\ This really sucks.

Are you sure your putting in the cable the right way? (if i remember correctly its black tab, cable, and top of plastic) Ill post pics if needed. But a new cable is definitely a start if that doesn't work. Let me know how it goes.

Yeah, I'm sure. It's actually a blue tab, the cable, then the plastic. I just placed my order, so hopefully this new cable will work. My guess is that throughout all my poking and prying with my screwdriver, I must've peeled too much off/damage the silver strips. Only time will tell!

:) Yea, I had this exact same problem... I had a v4 and I modded it with a flip top pretty recently so i just went on eBay and bought a v9. Now I'm stuck using a slide card because all the "good" cases for v9 i can find have really bad reviews. So dude, just buy another v4 and try searching google for Slide Card Pro and get that, really easy. C-ya.
Hmmmmmm...what to put... Well here's my ps2 specs.
PS2 V9
Gran Turismo trigger for independence
ELF Launcher with HDL, cogswaploader, SNES-Station, PGEN, and ExecFTPs(or whatever)

Alright, it's been a while, but the cable is here, and it fixed the issue of the reset/eject button not working. Yay!
However, again I have yet another problem: after the tray goes back into the PS2, it barely begins to spin before it stops. No matter how many times I eject/insert the tray, it does the same thing.
Any ideas on what could have caused this?

that my friend is the result of a good ol classic Disc Read Error...
Seems to me you have one of those wack PS2s that craps out after a couple years... but its ok. There is a way to fix it. There are forums and guides everywhere on the net.
The disc start to spin right...slowly then fast, then it slows then fast again....in that pattern.
This means that the laser cannot read the disc properly. The laser gets weak after a while. So you would have to adjust the white gear...directly behind the disc tray(you can only see it while the tray is out) With my experience, I remember adjusting the gear so that the laser gets high enough to where its almost touching the disc. But you just have to test it out to see how much to adjust for the disc to work...its a guess and check type of process.
Im not gonna go into full detail cuz its hard to explain. But there are guides out there.
This happened to me before too....it sucks.
PS3...it only does everything(that Sony allows it to)
