you cannot go by the information on magicgate from psp info menu as all of my cards have nothing there, this includes 3 32 meg cards direct from shop bought psp,s Woolworth's UK.
A 1 gig card that came with my gigapack UK psp and a 2 gig card from Sony dealer.
all have nothing next to magicgate

AWESOME POST...Im so glad this is here. But I have a problem (see below)
Ok so I DO have a fake card. FOR SURE.
I have ISO's on my fake card that play just fine (3.71M33-4 Firmware), But the problem is the save files that are written on the card are always corrupt.
Could it be that my Fake Mem card is the cause of this?
EDIT: just got some help from Deez Nutz

I was scammed twice. First, I used eBay and avoided all the Chinese and Australian sellers, because they tend to always be fake, so after searching nearly an hour, I found someone selling a 4GB Sony Memory Duo from California. Purchased it for 76 bucks. Got it two weeks later, and what do you know? FAKE.
I made a second attempt, using Amazon... yet again, for nearly the same exact price, it was FAKE.
---
The side-effects I've learned from fake cards is as followed:
1) VERY slow transfer rate (Takes me 15-25 minutes to move a small ISO in to my PSP)
2) Saving is not supported on all games, and when it is, the save state is corrupted and unuseable.
3) When placing an ISO in the ISO folder, only a max of two to three games show, even when you've placed, for example... seven games on it.
4) When adding eboot versions of games on the PSP in the "GAME" folders, the file will not delete unless the card is reformatted.
5) 4GB's is basically an estimate of around 1,000 songs, but the card only reads about 250 of the songs you place on them. I'm assuming the same circle corresponds with smaller sized cards.
6) Movies error upon playing, and depending on the movies size, and how many you place on it, not all of them display.
7) Images show as corrupted.
NOTE: This was done using a PSP that has been modded with Dark-Alex Custom Firmware 3.40 OE-A.

Also, can we maybe start a listing here of legitimate websites that sell PSP cards for the cheapest price? Now THAT would really help.
If there are people with good experiences and a positive response, I may be willing to attempt to buy another card if I find one cheap enough.
Personally, I'm looking for 4 GB's.
Thanks to anyone who helps.

I can tell you that your Hi-Speed 1GB card is genuine, but your Hi-Speed 2GB might be fake... Have a look :
Real Ones:
Quote: Memory Stick PRO DUO-HIGH SPEED--1GB (MSX-M1GN), 2GB (MSX-M2GN), 4GB (MSX-M4GN).
The High-Speed 2GB MS should be saying "MSX-M2GN", not "MSX-M2GS"
One letter off. Does it work fine? When transferring files, does it take a long time or does it work just fine?

Yep, I'm sure that the 4GB needs a certain firmware too...
Have fun with your 8GB =)

I used a Program Blackspeed v2 (cant find the link) which tests the read/write speed of cards, give it a index rating and a pic/report that could be posted.
I got a fake 4g card and the read / write speeds are well down on even a genuine 1g card. I have always used the magicgate supported check but reading this thread i wonder if perhaps i have wrongly judged.
I have found it quite difficult to find genuine cards :-(
PsP#1 : 2.01>3.71M33-4>3.80 M33-5
PsP#2 (Slim) : 3.80>3.90M33-2 All hail the UPMS Stck
If you need a UPMS Stick go here and then go here :-) *As recommended by January39

Well i recently got a psp, and got a 4GB sony pro duo memory card off of ebay. I studied it and seen the diffrence between fakes and legit pro duo memory cards and this is what I've come up with (Note: this is not any infomation that i've supplied, its from the good people on ebay and the ballers who have enough money to drop more then 70 dollars for something real.)
1. When you purchase a memory card, make sure to message the member before purchasing to ask him/her to take pictures of the product, esp when its a sony product.
# 2GB (MSX-M2GST/X)
# 4GB (MSX-M4GST/X)
# 8GB (MSX-M8GST/X)
These all are fake sony product model numbers (Props to the ebay guides for the infomation) so when you see these on your packages, return them immedately or contact the seller for a full refund.
I'll post more later, Gotta go and make love with my bed. (lol)
