OK, this guide is to help people find out the difference between fake MS's(Memory Stick('s)) and real MS's.
I have used eBay's clues and modified it a bit, so I use my own words.
Clue No.1
Real Ones:
Look at the back of your MS to use this clue.
Memory Stick PRO DUO(Previous Versions)--1GB (MSX-M1GST), 2GB (MSX-M2GS), 4GB (MSX-M4GS), 8GB (MSX-M8GS)
Memory Stick PRO DUO(Current Versions)-- 2GB (MSX-M2GS/X), 4GB (MSX-M4GS/X), 8GB (MSX-M8GS/X). *BEWARE some newer fakes are now also showing the correct Sony part numbers, hence MUST check the color coded round label below*
Memory Stick PRO DUO-HIGH SPEED--1GB (MSX-M1GN), 2GB (MSX-M2GN), 4GB (MSX-M4GN).
* PRO Duo: 2GB (MSX-M2GST/X), 4GB (MSX-M4GST/X), 8GB (MSX-M8GST/X).
# For PSP owner:- To check if you have a real one, go to your PSP XMB(menu) and then press the TRIANGLE button and choose INFORMATION.If it says MagicGate Supported then you're fine.If it says MagicGate Unknown, then you've received a fake(25% chance real)
Clue No.2
Examine the front of your MS to use this clue.
1. Genuine uses print ready/control vector art technique to print all the letterings. Fake uses inferior hi-res bitmap to copy the genuine, so zoom in a bit to see the printing flaw. The font on the fake usually is bolder, messy, out of focus and rub off easily. Newer fakes have exact print now.
2.
Genuine card is often thinner than fake. Try fitting the card into an adapter and you may find that it has problem as it doesn't seems to fit into the adapter easily (feels like its squeezing in). Newer 2GB fake (1959MB version) even has problem fitting into a PSP (PlayStation Portable).
Genuine 2GB.
Fake 2GB.
Clue No.3(Probably the most useful clue)
Examine the back of your MS to use this clue.
1. The font face, font size and printing technique are the main criteria to differentiate the genuine from the fake, so you must take notice.
2. Genuine has the letter 'S' in 'MSX-4GS' as Italic than the 'S' used in other writings such as 'BBSC1000000'. Also notice the OPEN top letter '4' for both 2GB and 4GB cards. Fake is using identical normal font face throughout!
3. On the 10 gold metal stripes/contact, genuine is covered fully by the black plastic housing from the top to the bottom end. Fakes may have small black holes on the some metal stripes, some have its gold metal stripe not fully covered by the black plastic housing. Some fakes have internal green color PCB board exposed as pictured displaying its inferior manufacturing defect.
4.
Genuine uses print ready/control vector art technique and has all golden letterings engraved by laser-etched into the plastic shell of the card. Fake uses inferior hi-res bitmap to copy the genuine, so zoom in a bit to see the printing flaw. The font on the fake usually is messy, out of focus and rub off easily. To know if it is printed, just use your finger to feel the surface as the letterings are a bit raised.
**NOTE.I have a 512MB MS and it is 100% genuine and the back of the MS's text is a bit bumpy.Use the other options to confirm if your PSP is fake or not.
Genuine 2GB
Genuine 4GB
Clue No.4(Very good to see if your MS is fake or not)
The Capacity Of Your MS and Transfer Speed Test.
1.
Genuine 4GB displays default capacity as 3839MB and genuine 2GB displays default capacity as 1909MB while some devices will read them at 1910MB. Some older fake 2GB shows 1948MB and 1959MB of memory space when being tested. Newer fake 2GB may now show any of these figures including the 1910MB of a genuine. However some 2GB fakes only have a true capacity of only 512MB/1GB. Try transferring as much data as possible to your card and also READ BACK from the card to see if it will actually hold close to the stated capacity with no sign of data corruption.
2.
Genuine hi-speed card (with red-stripe) has a transfer speed at about 80Mbps. Fake has a slower transfer speed with 1948MB fake actually can do about 65Mbps to 70Mbps and 1959MB fake at most 60Mbps.
This guide from eBay has successfully confirmed that my 4GB MS is real.I have failed to confirm that my 4GB MS is MagicGate supported, but besides that, I have a real MS.I hope this guide will help you.
Credits:
eBay, for making this guide.
KiKzM33z(LOL)for posting this guide in and modifying some of it.Plus, I confirmed that it helps :P
*NOTE*There are 2 parts of the guide that I did not mention:
The Packaging.
The inside of the MS.
If you want me to post them in then feel free to ask me.
Update.
Just a lil' update telling where NOT to buy your memory sticks from.
X Any online stores.(Some may be a genuine online shop, and trusted, but it's more safer.)
X Anywhere in Asia. This goes to PSP batteries too... But I did get my friend there to hack my PSP for me... So they're good for that.
X Any shops that are not famous. Stick to GAME, Comet, Currys, Argos. Note that the shops mentioned are in the UK. Maybe some of them in the U.S.
X Any traders that you're not to close with. Stick to friends or either check the memory stick first before trading.
Any other pointers please post.

Hm...Not sure about that.I just went by the guide.Do you know the transfer speed of your MS?
I don't know about the MagicGate unknown, but if the MS has been working with you for a long time and it has no problems, then I suggest you use it normally until it starts crapping out on you.

I think it says that because it's not created from Sony(?). Where did you get it from? Also, it should say "Supported" when you see the information.

I'm not sure... Well, if you think it works fine for you then I suggest you should stick to it. When(if) it starts to crap up, just get a new one - from shops :)
