ok check it out. the ps3 hd uses the fat 32 file system.
No it dosnt,the PS3 uses its own harddrive format extension which is NOT fat32.

nope it is Fat32 cause when I bought my new sata hd, I pluged it into the ps3 and it told me to insert sony hdd blah blah blah and then I hooked it up to my pc and formated it with win xp pro and plugged it back to the ps3 and still nothing. then I went to my xbox devlopment pc and hooked it up and formated it with a fat32 program and BAM!!!! PRESTO what ever you want to call it the ps3 reconized it and installed its software to it

Dude,you could format your harddrive to whatever you wanted to and the PS3 would still format it to its own harddrive extinsion.
Also with your thinking that it is Fat32,explain to me how it accepts files larger than 5gb when Fat32 can only accept 4gb.
External harddrives have to be formated to Fat32 but the PS3s internal harddrive has its own harddrive extinsion.

i have a Freecom External Hard Drive wich i have been using on my ps3 and a silvercresd home dvd player i formated my External Hard Drive i put a divx movie on the hard drive after i formated it i plugged it into my ps3 by the usb cable like normal nothing came up it would not recognise it nor would my silver crest dvd player the dvd player says bad disc i know it worked before i formated it so i looked on forums here for a solution and found out that my hard drive was NTFS so i followed NinReznor guide on page1 and formated it to Fat32 plugged it back into my ps3 with a divx movie and it picked it up straight away and so did my silver crest dvd player
wich has a usb conection
thats what happend to me

Hey I said i formatted it to fat32 and it formatted all but about 3 gigs of the 300 sata hd, and then the ps3 finally picked up that a hard drive was installed in to its bay. I dotn know the inner workings of it. but once the ps3 installed its software to it, its now fully working adn excepting what ever I pout to it and save from games. also I have linux on it and I save on the seperate partiton. that the ps3 cant read, except I have a linux program that lets me read data from a nother partition like its a seperate hd drive, i can read and right to it.

most of the time you jsut have to make a folder called PS# and then inside you make new folders, Video, Music, Photos, Games and then it works right off the bat, unless you use exteranl hdds from some other companyies then you have to format into fat 32

I want to thank everyone who has posted here. I followed the directions just a Reznor pointed out. No problems. Here is what I did for anyone else who is looking to do it;
1) Bought a 160GB SATA 2.5" notebook drive & External HD enclousure.

2) Assembled them both (very easy)
3) Download SwisNife as Reznor said.
4) Use Swisnife to format and partition the 160GB drive to FAT32. Works as one 160GB drive, not a whole bunch of 32GB partitions. GREAT.
5) Transfer all my stuff to the external drive.
6) Plug into the PS3 and viola, it's all there!
Problems;
I organized the external drive w/folders \PS3\MUSIC etc, but his gains me nothing, I still have to hit triangle "view all" to see my data. Also for some reason my PS3 wont recognize my Sandisk USB memory card, kinda a drag (it is formated FAT32). Other people have had isolated problems w/USB memory sticks also on other forums. Lastly the Rosewill external enclousure requires both of my USB ports on the PS3 (40g version). One is for power and the other is for data. I got this enclousure so I wouldn't need a AC adapter. Too bad I have to disconnect it use anything else.
Still it is great to get all my stuff available via the PS3. Now I can leave my computer off and still access all my data. Also my wife loves having all our photos easily accessed via the TV.

What are the advantages of having a larger drive in the PS3 vs an external? External lets me move it easily and organize files on the PC (which is easier than on the PS3). Having it in the PS3 would be good b/c the interface is easier (don't have to select USB, triangle, select all, move to the right folder, etc) and you can use the PS3 to sort by different methods (date, genre, artist etc).
I appreciate your opinion, maybe I will put it in the PS3 if there are good reasons to.

well even know people have give ways of doing this i may as well give mine after all the more the maryer right?
plug in ur hd to ur pc go to my computer and right click format
format it to fat 32 for ps3 useage wait till finished
now go to the root of ur hd and make a folder called VIDEO in caps
then place ur files in this folder divx only for this help guide
now unplug then plug into ur ps3
turn on ur ps3
go to video under the xmb menu
go down to exteral dive or whatever you have called it then hit x
and there you go they should be there

I use windows XP and have done everything as ninraz has said to do and made it as far as to where I do the pie chart...First off, I have a 500gb external hd, should the whole thing be made to fat32?? Secondly, what is the "volume label" and do I need to put anything in for it? I have tried a couple of ways and every time, when I click the "Create" tab, I get a "READ/WRITE" error, WTF do I do about that?

Apologies if this is seen as a slight hijack - if so, let me know and I'll start another thread - but this is all very similar to the problem I'm having.
I've just bought a 500GB freecom external drive to store important files and backup my laptop to. It's plugged straight into my router and I can map folders to drive letters on the laptop for easy access. As an addition, I'd love it if the PS3 could see it as a meda server so I could view photos on the TV.
Out of the box, it doesn't appear to have the necessary software/firmware to enable it to be used as a media server, but I can access it through HTTP, FTP and SSL.
Soooo, is there anything I can do to enable this? Would a FAT32 partition on it allow it to be seen by the PS3 operating system?
At the moment there is a workaround I can use which is to set up the FTP bit and then navigate to it using the PS3 internet browser but I'd rather it was embedded in the OS as a media server for ease of use.

Ok. I'm not sure if anyone has answered this question, I couldn't find a straight answer. I have a 350GB External HDD I use with my PS3. I have all my music and pics saved on there and it works fine. My question is can I download games from the psn on to it? I know you can download the games upto 4 times but instead can I hook the hdd to my pc and transfer to another external in case I run out of room? Also does anyone have any preference whether to download the games or buy them in store? Thanks
