So far, over six thousand HD DVD fans have signed an online petition that is urging, maybe pleading, for Warner Home Entertainment to reconsider its decision to drop the next gen format in favor of Blu-ray.
The petition, first posted two weeks ago, takes issue with Warner's press release that explains that the "consumer has clearly chosen Blu-ray," and instead points out HD DVD's lower ... [ read the full article ]

Anyone else see the laugh out loud irony in hughjars linking to an article on "beta" news?
Videodiscs didn't disappear for a while. Neither did Laserdiscs. Betamax had a long run even after they were defeated by VHS.
HD DVD limping into the future doesn't equate to them being viable or healthy in the long run.
It's crystal clear that some early adopters are very bitter and angry that their bet didn't pay off (while those of us who haven't sunk themselves into either format just yet have clearly made the wisest choice.) Apparently they started celebrating too early and had their hearts set on pointing their fingers in the nose of those who chose wrong. Little did they know they would ultimately be on the other end of that finger. That's the problem/risk when you choose to participate in such a silly fanboy "war."
7thsinger - the fanboys/haters will never go away. It's a personality flaw where one willingly adopts the "mine's the best, yours stinks" mentality. The war is not over, not just yet. But the tide has definitley shifted. But that also doesn't necessarily mean there won't be some ebb to that tide as well. There are still a few moves left to be made before HD DVD is officially loses the chess match.

Agree. Fanboys/haters are here to stay, and when the format war is over they will herd on over to something else to flame about. It just gets ridiculous sometimes reading pages and pages of retarded flaming.
The way i've tried to view the whole format war is to first, take comfort in having a choice. Having choices is good for consumers in a variety of ways. It promotes a healthy competition of value:price index.
Secondly, the format war has kept prices slightly more reasonable than they might be if one format or another had already dominated and subsequently owned that corner of the market.
Maybe this is all just me trying to have a positive take on the war and not choosing sides and bantering with people as hard-headed, rude, and sometimes even as cocky and foul mouthed as some of the ones present in these ongoing discussions.

SIGN IT IN BLOOD!!!!!!!!!!! Doesn't matter anyway as they are both here to stay. Been sayin' it all along. HD-DVD still has 35% of the market, enough to keep it seriously alive. Why do any boneheads out there care anyway? Dual format players are the answer and they're awesome too. 2 different formats both with different features, fun an no harm to anyone. If you're seriously on the "blu-ray" train (which I agree is more technologically advanced and hence the encryption and limitation of use) then maybe you all should stop, think and question your motives for really being so gung ho about it. Kinda like the old days of long distance phone carriers and the emerging competition for at&t. Do you give give a crap who your provider is as long as it's a reasonably clear connection and a cheap price? If you answer yes to this then consider politics because they all do things for no good reason too.

Well i donlt knwo about toshiba but you got to give it to SONY.. those clowns making 200000 plus at the company know what they were doing with the blueray and the ps3.. let face it standaone blueray is probably not as popular as the gaming machine.. literally for the same price you buy a gaming system plus you get the player.. when ps3 launch everyone complain about prices adn everoen predicted sony was doomed .. but you knwo what.. game division is back in the game and the format is finally taking a huge lead over hd dvd to the point where we can say good bye to hddvd.. Guess what, the advantage came when blueray playes started to be distributed all over the world when plp were literally buying a gaming system.. is a double strategy!!.. now sony is making cash on movies, blueray tech, and the playstation game division.. DAMN!! i wish i was that smart ,.. sony CEO you are my HERO!!! by the way imigine if microsoft would have make an agrrement with toshiba to include an hddvd built in on every 360.. then there woul dbe a shi* load of players everywhere and they story would have change.

All you can say is what?? Let's hear the lame comment you have yet to make. It's apparent what you're getting at.
Of course it's more technologically advanced but NOT IN ANY FRAKKIN' WAY THE END USER CAN TELL!! Only in ways like 1. That require a complete and total revamp and reconstruction of disc stamping plants and 2. For studios to mandate and/or implement their copyright initiatives prohibiting the consumer from doing whatever he/she would like to do to the merchandise once purchased............INCLUDING YOU! And in case you or any others out there have been living under a rock or 'shroom, HD-DVD is way more feature rich. I am NOT pro HD-DVD or pro Blu-ray. I recognize two apparent good things and the ease of the manufacturer's ability to develop hardware that can easily integrate both technologies. I have a great deal of respect for both formats and it's Samsung and LG that brought about the innovation of the 'dual format' players and they will soon and inevitably come WAYYYYYYYYY down in price for the average consumer inside a year.
So back up the smack talking and do tell as to what the "technological advancements" that blu-ray has over HD-DVD that would influence anyone (especially you) to buy and root ONLY FOR SONY and wish death to HD-DVD (even though it presently offers more fun and interactive features). Hmmmmmmmm???? You like the copyright?? You like the machines better that stamp them out?? Lemme guess...........you're looking at putting a stamping machine in your living room therefore blu-ray is your thing.
Gimme a break.

Ok, I obviously took your statements the wrong way when you said that "Blu-ray was technologically more advanced". I was laughing at the fact that it's not. If that was some attempt at being funny, sorry, but I didn't see the humor behind it other then the fact that it's completely the other way around. I myself back HD DVD so no need to argue, do you want to shake my hand?

First.......must pass on apologies for any misunderstanding or miscommunications.
Second, actually Blu-ray is more technologically advanced. In the encoding/transcoding, stamping, reading/writing process it truly is. This being the reason that many studios are on board with it...........due to it's ability to maintain a 'lockdown'
This according to www.blu-ray.com
"The first is capacity. Because Blu-ray utilizes a lens with a greater numerical aperture (NA) than HD-DVD, the laser spot can be focused with greater precision to fit more data on the same size disc. This allows Blu-ray to hold 25GB per layer (50GB on a dual-layer disc), whereas HD-DVD can only hold 15GB per layer (30GB on a dual-layer disc). Blu-ray has also adopted a higher data transfer rate for video and audio (54Mbps vs 36.55Mbps). The greater capacity and data transfer rates for Blu-ray will allow the movie studios to release their movies with higher quality video and audio than the HD-DVD format."
............so it is in fact more "technologically advanced" than HD-DVD. BETTER?? I DON"T THINK SO. Equal at best! Both rock, both should and WILL stay. Dual formats are the way people. Been sayin' it for months.

How could they go dual format???
Both formats are very different and it would drive production costs through the roof making each movie more expensive.
The faster they switch to a single format the less people they're gonna hurt.

I'm not 'tester22' so to be fair to some other poor sole.........you should rethink your associating me with whomever that is.
And..........keep banning me for NO REASON and I will drain existing email accounts from Google, Yahoo, Excite, Hotmail, etc and keep signing up to post one message. I'm a network manager here. I keep my networks tight, and preventatively maintained so when all is good................I gots the time. I'm a real prick when other's have questionable integrity and meritless motives.

What I find so funny about all these people getting banned is the reason it's for, I mean, It's really all because of this format war, people are getting all bent out of shape about what someone says then battle it out. I've had to of seen 4 or 5 people within the last couple of weeks getting banned or their accounts suspended permanently. Definitely some laugh out loud comedy going on here.
Slow your roll people....

If that is what gives your life meaning then by all means do it. As for my part, it takes me two mouse clicks then I'm on to bigger and better things.

Plenty is know about you. It's demonstrated through the likes of your pointless, meritless and unjustified dictatorship ways. Did not think the mods of THIS site would take the "do what I want, when I want and think how I want" way. And you're not a prick, you're a fucko........there is a difference. And the part. accel. comment makes so sense and is no analogy to my comment. Mine's true, yours is asinine.

Is that the best you can do to insult me? One little variation of the 'F' word is it? Come on, try harder.
I also like your try at using lots of big words to look smart but it should be "dictatorial ways" not "dictatorship ways" ;)
