The following comments relate to this news article:
article published on 9 February, 2008
After a multi-billion dollar failed experiment, Time Warner has made moves to rid itself of the still profitable, but quickly dying AOL dial-up internet division.
The company plans to keep AOL's Web-portal and advertising sectors and only sell its dial up internet access division which has been losing subscribers at an exponential rate. Time Warner's new CEO Jeff Bewkes had this to say ... [ read the full article ]

Take time to read the complete paper; it
was written by a women.
She also describes men as hunters.
Almost everyone of my friends who once had AOL were not able
to cancel it because "their wives wanted them to keep AOL as
they said it was so easy for them to use" ie,,, they did not want to
learn anything more than just getting to the info they
were searching for as quickly and as possible.
Looks like to me that AOL's original designers followed the "spirit"
of what this paper goes into!

I did go figure,,,, it's like this,,,,,
"Who" needs to start investing more money?, "Who" will pay?
Are you implying it should be the government?
How about companies like ATT; they are raiseing their DSL rates by 5 bucks and everyone is bitching about that! Should they invest more
money to lay fiber to each house and then try to get someone to
pay for it?
(Fiber only needs to reach within a mile or so, DSL works on copper
from that point to your house, even at the 6meg rate.
ATT's Uverse will bring both high speed data and video, and still uses
copper wire for the last few thousand feet.)
You say in Japan right now everyone has Fiber; $40.00 bucks for a T1 line. A T1 line is only 1.54 mbs/sec max, that is a high price connection there as opposed to ATT's DSL service on copper here in the good old USA!
Because of the pending ATT price increase I increased my speed to
the 1.54 rate; (again, that is considered a T1). I pay 20 bucks a month, price locked for a year.
I bet the reason everyone has fiber is because everyone over there
can reach out and touch someone, that is really touch someone because of the density in the population as opposed to the way we in the US live, with lots of space between us.
Anyway about AOL, that ISP was designed for beginers, mainly women.
Most people think that they are actually on the internet when using their service, however that is not correct, they are actually working out of one of the AOL's servers entirely. (that is the purpose of the "Keywords"), AOL looks at your browseing and inserts advertsements, you end up thinking that they originate from the distant webpages. AOL make it's money this way, that is why they could hand out all those thousands of "free" hours of connect time.
AOL provided "their version of the internet". After they add the extra's, the distant webpage is actually downloaded by their sever
and then sent to you, along with what ever else they want you to see.
So that's the way you go figure!
Fiber does not ONLY need to reach a mile. Verizon's FIOS is FIBER AT THE DOOR and so is everyone else's. I hope you're not implying that fiber doesn't transmit as far as copper because you'd be dead wrong as I know from expert and professional experience that fiber can transmit WITHOUT INTEGRITY LOSS from New York to California. As for the comparison to a T1...............well, this is how I can tell you're not a technician or networking/data professional (and if you are then time for a new profession for you), as anyone who knows a bit about T1s notes 2 major benefits. Granted, yes, cable and DSL (crap) offer speeds like 4, 6, 8, downloads but they fluctuate like a bitch contingent upon the use on that network. DSL only guarantees your speed from the CO to the demarc (your house) but doesn't take into account the traffic AT THE Central Office. Cable is of course contingent upon how many people are actively on the nodes at the same time. A T1 is totally and emphatically unaffected by the number of people on any other network so the speeds are untouched and 1.5Mbps is consistent and reliable. In addition to that, a T1's upload is also 1.5Mbps which is consistent and reliable compared to cable modem or DSL which is only averaging 384Kbps up.............unless you're paying out the whazoo for 8 or 12Mbps down and then you get 1.5 up still subjected to massive fluctuations.
This now concludes network and data transmission medium 101.
Class is over. If you have further questions, ask your mommies and daddies.

The great thing about fiber is once it is laid, it doesn't need to get upgraded. If you want more bandwidth, you just upgrade the routers, switches, and the like. the cable stays where it is, and has no need to be upgraded, unlike copper, where if you want more bandwidth, you have to lay more copper. With the price of copper now, it is actually a good investment to create an essentially "future-proof" network that nobody will want to steal and sell for scrap.
When it comes to AOL dial-up, i say just dissolve it and invest the newfound capital in a good fiber-based network. I can't think of any reason why anyone would want to buy what is (was) in my opinion the crappiest of ISPs.

Yeah.. comments like that don't help.. I'm a woman, and been using computers longer than a lot of the members here have been alive.. go figure..
Dialup still has a role. It happens to be very useful to have an account if you travel a lot and wind up in some hick town the back woods miles from anywhere with only a phoneline for company.
Don't make comments about women. Hicks, rednecks, and hillbillies are fair game.

everybody knows what is meant by a "hick town"
One motheaten horse and people sitting on the porch chewin tobaccee and spitting, while eyeing you with that "looky here ma.. it dun be a stranger" stare that you normally see from a bull looking through a gate.
Sorry.. I saw a few places like that in my music business years..
"You want to use the phone?? Jake down at the saloon.. he got a phone.. sometimes she works, sometimes not".. not just in the mid west either. I live in one now.. actually the local neanderthals are harder to fathom..ahhh Wigan.. thatched busses

I think all isp should get rid of dial up and upgrade all exsisting dial up users to the slowest adsl speed. It will still remain profitable and the isp's should keepp the contracts at the same rate as the users had.
