After a multi-billion dollar failed experiment, Time Warner has made moves to rid itself of the still profitable, but quickly dying AOL dial-up internet division.
The company plans to keep AOL's Web-portal and advertising sectors and only sell its dial up internet access division which has been losing subscribers at an exponential rate. Time Warner's new CEO Jeff Bewkes had this to say ... [ read the full article ]

Yeah it still exists. If you live out in the country your only option is Dial-up or that Directv Internet Satalite thing. My in-laws only have dial up for this reason. The United States really needs to start investing more money in the the laying of fiberoptic lines. I am in Japan right now and everyone has Fiber. And they only pay $40 a month for a T1 Line. Go Figure.

I did go figure,,,, it's like this,,,,,
"Who" needs to start investing more money?, "Who" will pay?
Are you implying it should be the government?
How about companies like ATT; they are raiseing their DSL rates by 5 bucks and everyone is bitching about that! Should they invest more
money to lay fiber to each house and then try to get someone to
pay for it?
(Fiber only needs to reach within a mile or so, DSL works on copper
from that point to your house, even at the 6meg rate.
ATT's Uverse will bring both high speed data and video, and still uses
copper wire for the last few thousand feet.)
You say in Japan right now everyone has Fiber; $40.00 bucks for a T1 line. A T1 line is only 1.54 mbs/sec max, that is a high price connection there as opposed to ATT's DSL service on copper here in the good old USA!
Because of the pending ATT price increase I increased my speed to
the 1.54 rate; (again, that is considered a T1). I pay 20 bucks a month, price locked for a year.
I bet the reason everyone has fiber is because everyone over there
can reach out and touch someone, that is really touch someone because of the density in the population as opposed to the way we in the US live, with lots of space between us.
Anyway about AOL, that ISP was designed for beginers, mainly women.
Most people think that they are actually on the internet when using their service, however that is not correct, they are actually working out of one of the AOL's servers entirely. (that is the purpose of the "Keywords"), AOL looks at your browseing and inserts advertsements, you end up thinking that they originate from the distant webpages. AOL make it's money this way, that is why they could hand out all those thousands of "free" hours of connect time.
AOL provided "their version of the internet". After they add the extra's, the distant webpage is actually downloaded by their sever
and then sent to you, along with what ever else they want you to see.
So that's the way you go figure!

What's up man?:~) How come it was such a damn "touchy" subject?
C'mon, we all know that here in US many things are up-side-down! In South Korea they've been soaring on the net at speeds X10 faster then US for quite some time...Every little shack has high speed. And the high density houses/population...how long that crappy excuse is gonna hold for?!!
Or cell phones for example...they've had them in Europe and Asia of the size of a match box, and loaded with features, and services at half the prices for years, while here people were still carying bricks in their briefcases. It would be nice if our providers would give a damn about consumers, for once!
As for dial-up, unfortunately, if one lives 3-4 miles out of town, that's the only choice...unless is loaded and can afford the DirectTv satellite internet.

How many of these other places with all this supper high speed
at almost no cost,,, how many of these are in countries with the same
type market system as in the US?
Don't a lot of those places have more government controll,
less personal freedom, etc?
Anyways, I guess everyone agrees that AOL (old AOL) sucked, most recent AOL/Time Warner version sucks, and any future version of AOL
will still suck regardless of who purchases it!

OH...
...i see. that's why i never paid for those multiple years of aol
between using about 3 different credit cards i had free aol for something like 3-4 years. one of those years i had cable for about 6 months and basically still couldn't get rid of the free aol.
we can't get dsl way out here and the only worthwhile broadband option is $50/month for comcast. i'm sure there are still a relatively large number of people in similar positions who won't pay that much. obviously, not enough for the massive profits that company wants to generate.

BWAhahaha
true. hilarious, but pretty true.
aol was super user-friendly, but any old web browser is easier now than aol ever was back then.

"How many of these other places with all this supper high speed

"Don't a lot of those places have more government controll,

Also to be fair the Asian counties are like 5-25X smaller than the US but the unregulated capitalism structure in the US that creates and nurtures monopolies is not helping, the government should contract out fiber optic lines main lines and then after 10 years sell them off to the highest bidder so they can maintain and expand it.
Really the government needs to build a nation wide high speed (12+ Mbit) infrastructure.. after 10 years sell it off to the highest bidder so they can manage it under certain conditions depending on if the tiered net is in place or not.
I wonder what would happen if we sold off some roadways to big biz let them advertise on it and maintain it and if something happens they can be sued :P LOL
Big biz and government can work if theres proper oversight and rules in place...but by god we humans just have to cock things up....

Not really we still pollute to much and need to move off fossil fuels for more reasons than the environment.
The government needs to wake up and start investing in methane as the mainstream fuel we could move to it in 20years if they get of their lazy oil fed arses...

Yeah.. comments like that don't help.. I'm a woman, and been using computers longer than a lot of the members here have been alive.. go figure..
Dialup still has a role. It happens to be very useful to have an account if you travel a lot and wind up in some hick town the back woods miles from anywhere with only a phoneline for company.

I was just asking you a couple questions, mainly who will pay,
and who is going to lay these fiber optic cables.
The solution is not simple.
I wasn't getting down on you, just asking "WHO".
There was a lot of bitching about a small 5 dollar increse in
ATT's service, so the question is a good question, it sill remains unanswered.
In the short time I've been reading posts here at this site,
I get the impression that a majority of everyone believes that world owes them everything at little or no cost out of their pockets!
As far as the fiber, probally no way of economically runing it to
all existing homes.
Back to "who pays".
Newer technology like Uverse doen't even need it
all the way to your house.
And about AOL being for beginers and women, that is true.
Yes a lot of women know their way around a computer, and a lot of men do not, but a higher percentage of women do not and therefore AOL service provided them internet browseing without them having to learn much more than navigate the AOL interface with a lot of links setup to make it easy for them. As Jerry Siendfield joked,
"men are hunters, women,,,,,,

So who does all the secretarial work, the buying in business.. all the payrolls, all the other IT based work that runs modern business??
It's the men in the management who tend to be the computer illiterate ones I'm sorry to say. A quick look into the accounts department of any large business will show you the truth.

I don't blame those more fortunate than us for taking their fast internet service for granted.
Our nearest city of any size (NAB marketshare 161) is an hour away, so we are really "out there". We have neither fiber optic nor cable, and those with satellite report frequent outages for their $80/month. We could buy a PCMCI card for we do have cell phone service, but they won't guarantee speeds over 128kb/s (although 2.4 mb/s may occur!) and will drop that to 12 kb/s if data limits are exceeded but won't tell you what those limits are...for $60/month plus a new line fee.
We have one phone company for our area; Embarq. And it's either them at $25, or AOL at $10 per month for dialup.
I wish I could humble the laughing, smart-ax punks earlier in this thread by telling them that not everyone is so fortunate, but it is not possible to humble the Ignorantly Arrogant.

If you look back on my first post on this topic I was describing the way AOL was set up viewing it from
the point of a business model.
After all that is related to this topic, getting someone to purchase AOL.
Any business must understand about the people that they are marketing
their product to.
AOL wanted to provide a dial up sevice that made it easy for a wide variety of people to both use and desire to use.
Men and womem from a marketing viewpoint are different; have been, allways will be.
Women tend to not be "hunters" , they expect not to have to waste
time trying to "hunt".
After posting my previous statement, I did a search and found this
that explains what I am trying to say.
http://www.vngroup.com/Aoir/Vickie.htm
Maybe that is one problem that Time Warner has had in making AOL
still work, continueing with a business based on exactally
what I said at first, "Anyway about AOL, that ISP was designed for beginers, mainly women".
It was not meant to be putting women down, just that when first set up. AOL went for the begining computer users and women,
and with regards to women, making it easy for them to find things that they were interested in without "hunting".
Men and women are diffferent and any buisness trying to sell a product considers these differences in trying to match
their product to these differences.
I see the probem with a forum; you try not to go into too much
detail, then people miss understand exactlly what you are
trying to say. So, I gess to that I have to say that phrase,
go figure,
