I was in the same boat you were I was only downloading occasionally. And I personally got tired of having to remember to update my lists. Thinking "Did I turn PG2 on before I left? And having these lingering doubts in my head. So I switched to Usenet and its been smooth sailing ever since.

OK how can I put this, I don't know anybody here except the Creak, it was thru his link from the pc buiding thread that cought my interest. Only Creaky here knows that I am far from bieng anykind of techie like most of you guys.
I never heard of pg2 nor even knew what p2p meant even though I would see it constantly, I googled both, p2p I recognized right away the explanation was simple, I was never aware I myself was a p2p user, occasionally I would use limewire for some music at times till thier new upgrade turned me off and was told from all the neighborhood kids from my area not to use it anyway use Frostwire, I know about I think anyway how those riaa or mpaa people can come after for downloading music which I do maybe ten tunes a year, I still don't understand exactly what pisses them off is it downloading or sharing or both, nor do I care, I'm to damn old to worry about it and they both can kiss my behind. I did check into that torrent thing once but was way over my head.
After checking up on pg2 on google wikopedia didnt tell me much till I cought some reviews with cnet, than I understood what it was and what it does, still can't get how it works because it's still way to complicated for me but still very interesting, this is something I would love to learn to use even as I read from reviews on cnet it's not easy but I love the fact that it could make things so much safer like blocking malware etc.
Some say it's buggy some say not but all say it's not easy but well worth it when you master it, one guy said if you use p2p without it it's like swimming with sharks, there were a lot of reviews but this guy cought my attention.

PG2 imports list of IP ranges to block from the sourceforge website. As of right now, my PG2 is blocking nearly 3 billion addresses. Yes, I said "billion". 2,915,505,692 to be exact.
Without this program your computer is wide open....
Cons: It can be a pain in the ass to deal with at times. You can set the tray icon to blink on probes (HTTP recommended, not TCP/UDP or it'll be blinking constantly). It will do this often, sometimes preventing you from loading the site you wish to visit. Other times, the site loads fine, and you'll see that PG2 just blocked a tracking probe that loaded w/the page.
When it blocks something legit, you have to open it up, click "history", "blocked", and find the address you want to allow. (you can try right-clicking on the adress as it flys by on the interface screen, but it's nearly impossible to catch them) You can allow it for 15 mins., an hour, or permanently.
The program would be greatly improved with the addition of either a right-click context option to allow the page you're trying to load, or a button on the interface to "allow last blocked".

That was interseting even though I only understood half of it. I could have over a hundred questions here about this thing but really I would still not get it I'm a sit down next to me show me type guy, but I must say this peapod person what a great way to explain things, I almost understood it, his graphic guide was great, thumbs up big guy, he reminded me of alchohol he use to explain things that way.
If I started asking questions about this thing I think I would wind up on the incohearant thread and might get put on here's another dummy list to laugh at but I must say it's very entertaining cause there's a whole lot bigger dummies on that thread than this dummie will ever be, I think most are probably really young kids I hope most adults can't be that stupid on some of the things that come up on that thread. Back to subject.
This pg2 thing really has got my interest, I know it's not easy but I'm really gonna try and study it, I never had any idea so many people can be tracking you after reading some of those reviews, even though it's not full proof as many say but it sure is nice to thumb your nose up at those mpa and ria guys, plus the goverment, like dropping your drawers and saying, hey you want to track something, track this.
Good thread with great input.

OK, let me ask you this first, , I guess this thing blockes sites, after reading that this blocks not just thousands but millions, how do I know what it's blocking on me,
How will I know if it blocks legit sites on me and how would I be able to unblock it, if it blocks so many how could I find it if there's thousands to chose from, and what about how it's named, I don't have to tell you guys e.g. it blocks AD, bet it wont say afterdawn, it will have some goofy slogan with numbers, am I making sense so far, just want to make sure you guys are understanding what I'm trying to ask.
And if something does go wrong that I just won't be able to fugure out which will be highly possible will I be able to unload this thing, and last and I'm sure there is, what would be some of the most important do's and dont's before I start playing with it, thanks guys.

If your trying to access a legit site, and it won't load and PeerGuardian2 is flashing then PG2 is blocking some part of that website/page.

Right click the blocked entry that corresponds to the site you want and from the right click menu chose "Allow Permanently".
And to know what goofy name/slogan/set of numbers that corresponds to your site is easy if you do it like this.
Close all your browsers and apps that utilize the internet.
Open up your browser of choice and navigate to the webpage in question.
If the webpage wont load then whatever PeerGuardian2 is showing as being blocked is what needs to be unblocked to access the site.

Yes it runs in your system tray by the clock. Just right click and click on Quit/Exit. And if that doesn't work there are 2 more options:
*In PeerGuardian2's start menu folder there should be a shortcut called "Recover PeerGuardian 2" this will unload the driver from memory.
*You could also just reboot if the program won't close/the program hangs.

I don't bother at all.. the people who want to catch you can download these lists as easily as you can.. and then just use ip's which aren't on the list for their scanners... it's easier to spoof your own ip for trackers... anyway.. they have ways to scrape lists of ip's from trackers without connecting to you at all..

okay I am using vista.... and I actually tried this on xp as well. i get all the way through the tutorial and all is good until I export to the file i created with notepad and nothing. Only thing I see different is I noticed in the export manager that the place I have it set to export to says it is disabled whereas in our tutorial screen yours is enabled... have no idea how to change that can you help?

yes we I say "nothing" I mean it does not export the lists to the notepad document I made according to your tutorial.... ANd as I mentioned before... in the area where you set up the export I noticed mine says disabled... where as yours says enabled... so i think that may have something to do with it.... So when I say nothing... blocklist downloads the lists and when done I click on export to send to document for pg2 and all the screen says is "ready" and when I open the file it is empty... so it is not transfering the info for me to the file... hope i explained it ... and thannk you.

Did you make sure the notepad file you made is saved as a .p2p file and not a .txt file? The file you saved shouldn't have a notepad icon it should be a blank white icon.

using notepad I did....Save as...all files.... and saved as exports.p2p...however it does have a notepad icon but no .txt extension...

also the file seems to show up as exports.p2p.txt?? I dont get that after what I did.... Just tried the process again and someohow I seem to have saved the list as I am blocking 2.6 billion right now..didnt do anything different and it is my hope that it will update

'exports.p2p.txt' = classic Windows inability to handle filenames hence why when you saved the file in the way that you did, you ended up with the dual suffix. Annoying but you can always disable PG2 if you want and rename it correctly via the command line, however it's obviously working ok as PG2 can 'see' the file correctly.
Just beware of how you save files in future in case you hit an application that doesn't understand the dual suffixes.

For your exports.p2p file here is how to fix it. First lets delete the exports.p2p.txt you have now. After that is done open Notepad, don't bother typing anything just hit "Save As". Navigate to C:\Program Files\PeerGuardian2\lists this is were the file will be saved. But DO NOT hit Save yet! In the Save As window you have two "options" File Name and Save as Type. Change the Save as Type from "Text Documents (*.txt)' to All Files. And then for File Name save the file as exports.p2p and everything should be squared away now.

actually that was exactly what I did the first time when I got the dual file extension... but like i said it seems to be working now... so we will see when I try to update the lists... REALLY appreciate your help...thank you

Just if anyone should view this thread Peer Guardian 2 as you may or may not know is pretty much a defunct piece of software. Peer Block is compatible with 64 bit OS'es and Windows 7 which I can confirm. I would highly recommend that even if Peer Guardian 2 works for you currently that you switch to Peer Block.

Like I said, peer guardian is no longer supported, and peer block is the way to go.

Hi all;
Recently,whenever I start PG2,a resounding Ding!(error sound)is followed by an error message,then it seems to start normally,followed by the same error warning when I shut it down....ideas?

Uninstall Peer Guardian. Reboot and install Peer Block, because as stated PG2 isn't being developed anymore and Peer Block is the future.

It's using cached files, try clearing C:\Program Files\Bluetack\Blocklist Manager\Cache\*.* and trying again.
