So I got tired of using the recovery disc over and over again and I'm like "OK time to open this guy up and check the soldering points"
So I take it apart to check and I remembered I had put electrical tape over the chip so I decided to take it out...
I didn't reassemble the Wii and left it all open, using a screwdriver to push the on/off/reset/eject buttons... It detected the recovery disc on the 1st try... As I powered up, saw the GameCube logo.
Then I decided to try Super Paper Mario and I got no luck. So I put the recovery back in and saw the GameCube logo again. So I actually clicked "START" to see the black screen. Left it there for maybe 20 seconds and then powered off the Wii.
Powered it back on, saw the GameCube disc. The recovery disc that I was using was the plain file, no GCOS, no filechopping. Then since I had the same disc GCOS, filechopped, I put that in to see if it would recognize it as well. It did, saw the GameCube logo. Then I removed the disc and put in Super Paper Mario again, WORKED.
Then since I had just burned a 1.9g brand new disc, filechopped, GCOS I was like "Well here goes it again..." so this time the update was successful. Restarted, put in HACKED Config 1.3, loaded up the screen, changed REGION SETTING to ON, saved. Rebooted Wii, tried a couple of other backups, worked as well.
Super Mario Galaxy: worked.
Super Smash Bros. Brawl: worked.
Mission Accomplished! :)
Glad to see you're back in business! ill ship my Wii over so you can work your magic JK. Anyways, 2 things
1. You decided to take what out the wiikey?
2. i still can believe your wii read the "plain" recovery disc. we'll i guess ill try it we'll see what happens

Congrats on fixing your Wii. I'm waiting for my Triwing screwdriver to come in so I can fix mine. I also have black electrical tape securing the WiiKey. So hopefully my Wii will be fixed too.

You can buy a Torx #4 screwdriver. That's what I used. You just have to be careful not to strip the heads.

if you mean 1.9g having trouble playing a real version of SSBB then yes, 1.9g cant play it. If you mean a backup, 1.9g works.
if you have the real version i recomend NOT doing the corrupting method unless you want to end up like me with a dead(hopefully not for good) wiikey

Snoba, I removed the electrical tape from the top of the chip. :) It was covering the whole chip, not really sure if it had anything to do with it...
But when I powered the system back up, naked with no cover, no screws holding the drive bay to the actual casing, it worked.
I thought that I had tighten the bay screws too hard and it was causing contact with the metal and shorting the connections..
But when I put the console back together I tighted them back as I had and it worked...
I let SSBB playing on the menu / intro over 20 times to make sure it would work and it did. Also played online, no problemos.
Snoba, yep, it did read it... For some reason, it seems like the plain disc worked better for me. But remember that once I saw the logo, I swapped out to the GCOS'ed one and it also read it... But last night when I tried endless amount of times with the GCOS'ed disc I had no success and only had the 1st glimpse of light when I used the plain one today.
Croc, 3.2U and 1.9g seems to work for both SSBB and Galaxy for me.
Update your Wiikey to 1.9g (get the GCOS'ed version), then update to 3.2U... It seems to work for everyone, at least on my NTSC Wii it does.

I had the latest version updated from SMG and 1.9g (unfortunately I forgot to check what version SMG actually updates to)..
When I updated to the latest, 3.2U, my Wiikey went to crap. That's when after a couple of times and literally opening my Wii I got it recovered back to 1.9b, reflashed to 1.9g and now I'm at 3.2U and 1.9g and all working fine.
I also thought that MAYBE the small battery you remove from your Wii might have something to do on how to recover your Wii with the disc? Just a thought.. Because I did remove it when I opened my Wii...

Croc, as far as steps, I'd upgrade to 1.9g first and then to 3.2U. That's what everyone seems to be doing and it seems to work just fine.
I seem the only person out of luck on where the Wiikey chip decided to act up.
If in case it does go crazy, let me know and I'll copy you the step-by-step procedure I did that I just sent to Snoba on a PM. Too much to put in a thread. :P

So I decided to put the step-by-step procedure here just because it has worked for 1 more person as well. Should help out those almost pulling their hair out in order to recover.
So I was using initially the GCOS'ed 1.9b recover disc.
The 1st time I ever put it in, I turned on my Wii first, pushed "A" to get to the main screen, put the disc inside. Then I waited to stop spinning and hit Reset.
Then I left it on the main screen (since after hitting reset, it automatically goes into the Wii Menu screen) for about 4 minutes at a time. I did it numerous times like this:
After 4 minutes, pressed On/Off button on the Wii. Waited 5-8 seconds, turned it back on with the on/off button on the console, pushed "A" on the wii remote, got to main screen. Since I wouldn't see the GameCube icon, I hit reset. Counted 4 minutes again, hit on/off button once again, 5-8 secs, on button once again, and so on. I did it about 20 times so when right before I went to bed, I ejected the GCOS'ed disc and then turned off the Wii and left it with the Red light (fully turned off, but did not unplug the power cord).
Then when I woke up, I read the post by someone else that was able to recover with the plain 1.9b recover. I decided to immediately download it from the link on Page 1 that says "1.9b recover", the 1st recover disc link. I burned it with ImgBurn on a Verbatim DVD-R at 2.4x and VERIFIED IT too. This time I even wrote on the disc with a Sharpie "Wii Recover Disc 1.9b" because I was so confident it would work.
But before I put it in, I read that the other person would also unplug the power cord in between reset cycles. So before I even did anything, I unplugged the Wii from the cord, waited 10-15 seconds and plugged the power back in. I thought I had forgotten the GCOS'ed disc inside so I hit EJECT first thing and I thought it was weird because nothing would pop out. I hit it for the 2nd time and then I realized that I had taken the disc out.
So finally I pushed the Power button on the Wii again to power it up. When I got to the screen that says to push "A" to continue, I poped in the plain 1.9b recover disc. Waited until I heard it stop spinning and then hit "A".
Magically, the GameCube icon appeared. I clicked on it to hear the "GameCube game music" then clicked back.
At this point, I wanted to upgrade back up to 1.9g so I could try SMG so I grabbed the Wiikey 1.9g Upgrade disc I used a couple of months ago to upgrade 1.9g for SMG and popped it in. It was a DVD+R, cheap Dynex from Best Buy media.
Saw the GameCube icon, clicked on it and clicked START. I also hooked up my GameCube controller at this time.
The TEST phase of the upgrade was fine but when it came time to actually FLASH it, it was giving me a ReadID Error and I kept pushing "A" on the GameCube controller but it kept kicking me back to the Error message. So I hit the On/Off button on the Wii and then powered it back up.
I couldn't read any discs after that once again and I was mad!!
So there I went once again with the whole recovery disc process, this time I kept going back and forth with the GCOS'ed disc and the plain. I would unplug the power cord in between On/Off cycles as well, waited 10-15 seconds and then power it back up. I'd get NOTHING...
So I started to get mad and thought my Chip was just busted. I decided to open my Wii to check my solder points and stuff. I left the PLAIN recover disc inside the bay.
I saw that I put a small piece of electrical tape over the chip when I had installed it so I decided to take that out.
With the Wii all opened up, no screws attached, even holding the bay in place, I plugged the power back on it and used a small screwdriver to hit the EJECT button at first. I thought it was the On/Off button. So then I inserted the disc back inside and the Wii self-powered itself up and I saw the GameCube disc!
At this time I decided to try my Super Paper Mario disc to see if it would read. It didn't.. I popped it back out and RESET my Wii. I put it back inside and nothing again. So I put in the PLAIN recover disc back inside and saw the logo once again. This time I clicked on it and then hit START. The screen went black and I waited 20-30 seconds and hit the On/Off button on the Wii with a screwdriver. Then I unplugged the power, waited 10-15 secs, plugged it back in, powered it on and the GameCube disc was still there. So I popped it out and put in the GCOS'ed recover disc and also saw the GameCube logo. I took it out (without running it..) and popped Super Paper Mario back in and saw the SPM logo!
Since my Wiikey 1.9g update had given me problems last time, I downloaded a GCOS'ed copy of it from Page 1 of this thread and burned it on a same Verbatim DVD-R at 2.4X, VERIFIED the burn as well (using ImgBurn 2.4.0.0 by the way..)
I took Super Paper Mario out, popped the update disc in and saw the GC logo, so I hit START. This time the update was flawless and passed through the FLASH portion of the update as well.
At the end it rebooted my Wii so then I removed that disc and popped in the GCOS'ed 1.3 Config Disc I had just burned, Verbatim DVD-R 2.4X, Verified.
Loaded it up and saw the logo, so I ran it. I went to the REGION OVERRIDE and set it to "ON" and it saved it. Then I went to the "reboot wii" portion and hit "A".
When it came back, I saw the GC logo so I took that out and put in SPM to see if I'd see the logo and I did! So I took it out and tried out SMG to see if I'd see the logo also and I did. Next up was SSBB and since it was the 1st time I had put it in, it told me it needed to apply an update to my Wii. I hit "OK" and let it update. At the end, it automatically reset my Wii and I was back at the menu. I finally saw the SSBB logo on the menu, so I went to it, hit START and voila.. Go it to work as well.
At that point, it was when I finally decided to put my Wii back together so I left the SSBB game inside and unplugged everything and assembled it back.
Tried it once again and it was perfect.
Then I let it run on the Intro of SSBB for over 20 minutes to make sure I wasn't gonna get any read errors or nothing and it was fine. At the end I just exited it back to the Wii Menu and turned the Wii off.
That's the whole story! :) Maybe it has something to do with the BATTERY you remove when you disassemble the Wii... not sure..
Hope this "Tutorial" helps. :P

I wish I had been able to find this kind of thread when this happened to me about a year ago. I woke up one morning, played my backup of call of duty 3, went to work and when I got back not a sigle backup would work. I opened it up and looked at everything and it seemed fine. Closed it back up and it wouldn't read anything. To the guy with the wii that wouldn't read anything. Before you try to remove your wiikey, try the system format memory thing. I read after I removed mine that sometimes helped.
