Still sounds to me like you wore your drive out, as Dialysis pointed out.

you could try clonedvd + anydvd and see if you have the same problems.

whats your system specs ? and OS system?
box systems (HP,Dell etc.) seem to have problems sometimes compared to a custom built machine. also the box system preloaded software can be a pain compared to loading you own OS system without the add ons seem to make a difference and its hard to pinpoint why. confliting software is the biggest problems we see in here

I agree with all of the experts here and you definately have have a top panel helping you. So I do not know what I could contribute to their remarks other than the fact that I am new to this as well and not overly computer savvy. So sometimes it is the little things that us newbs overlook. When dialysis1 says that you wore out your dive: A. He probably knows what he is talking about and B: Just because it still plays ok does not mean that it is on par with when it was new.(3 yrs ago if I read right) I know it can be frustrating, but fight the urge to get defensive and instead concentrate on asking questions that will help these guys to get you through your problem, because they are only here to help.
Also, not sure but maybe someone can/will correct me, have you had any trouble with your RAM or made any changes in that area. Running a diagnostic might be another road to troubleshoot.

I am not being defensive...sorry if you think that I am. Yes, it is frustrating. I know they are trying to help...that is why I posted here. I don't know what other questions I need to be asking. I have tried everything that they have suggested, and nothing works. I find it difficult to believe that 2 drives that play fine and worked with those two programs a week ago, have suddenly both stopped working? What are the chances of that? I DO appreciate any and all help with this problem. Thanks

What are the DVD drives that you are using? Also you said that you store on a separate hard drive, internal or external? Like ZoSo asked, list your system specs and maybe there will be something there for them to go off of.

Another thing you can try is giving your PC a real good cleaning. Check for spyware and malware. Do a disc cleanup. Remove all those unneeded files. A program like CCleaner can help.
Minimize the amount of programs running in the background that are sitting there eating up your memory.
Defrag your drive so your PC doesn't have to work so hard. These things are known to slow down a computer.
99% of all problems are between the computer and the chair.

Sorry it has been a few days, I have been working. I have ran the cccleaner, nothing changed. I defraged & used dick cleanup, no change. I tried to use clone dvd, but it won't let me do anything because of the copyright protection on the dvd...I'll look into that more as I have never used this program before. Here are the system specs/ drive info. If more info is needed, let me know.
Thanks for your help.

I can't use that then because I used a free trial of anydvd a long time ago. Any other programs that are free so I can see if those might work?
Thanks!

So are you trying to rip directly to your external HDD? Have you tried instead ripping from your internal DVD drive to your internal HDD? Have you received any pop-ups from your USB controller like, This Device Will Function at a Reduced Speed. Or anything similar? It sounds like maybe your transfer speeds have been reduced for some reason, maybe a bad USB 2.0 controller, maybe not, but you might check it in your hardware/Device Manager and see if it says that it is functioning properly. Just a thought.

building a custom built machine (desktop) is the best way to go if you want to backup DVDs
