Earlier this year Pioneer promised that they would be releasing the most powerful Blu-ray player ever built by the end of the year and true to their word, the Elite BDP-09FD is now available, at the hefty price of $2,200 USD.
Until today the Sony PlayStation 3 had been arguably the most powerful Blu-ray player on the market and one of the cheapest, retailing for $400 USD for its smallest ... [ read the full article ]

For $2200 it better be able to bring me a beer and make my popcorn for me when I want to watch a movie. If I wanted to spend $2200 on a Movie Player I could build a Media Center PC more powerful than that for cheaper and do a whole lot more.

Well, maybe for you or myself (*I* certainly can't afford one; I could probably get a cheap-but-serviceable car for that amount), but I still think it's nice to have a *proper* standard-bearer to look up to (by "proper" I mean something that doesn't also double-up as a game machine complete with joysticks or game/control pad; something geared exclusively toward home theater), something at the top to which we can compare whatever else we've bought in it's stead.
I think that's incentive-enough to have this machine on the market even though I myself won't be buying it.
Now let's see how Sony, et al, respond to this unit.

Not to be a nudge, but a 16bit panel would capable of generating 281,474,976,710,656
colors
16 bits: 2^16 = 65,536 variations in gradation
65,536 variations in gradation across three colors, Red Green and Blue:
65,536^3 = 281,474,976,710,656 colors total
So while it's an enormous number just the same (literally the square of current 8-bit screens), it's also not the 2,800 trillion mentioned in the article, but rather 280 trillion, a factor of 10x. It's only a zero, difference I guess, but it's akin to seeing an extra zero on your pay check... or God forbid a missing zero, which would quickly make that "nothing" worth something to you.

Ahh the insanity of the high end equipment manufactures knows no limits. For that price I can get a PS3 and a nice home theater system. Hell, if I shop around and lower my expectations I can buy a PS3, HT system and a Small Hi-Def TV.

As some at Afterdawn may have heard, the specs are amazing but not worth the extra $1700, Why the extra cash you ask well its not just a blue-ray play. here i will list the specs of advanced hidden functions within this marvel of a player. the obvious is its mass weight with a built in toaster, microwave, laser Show, pyrotechnics, and a refrigerator. to top it off it has its own built in AI, its purpose is to protect your new purchase with a 1.5 kiloton Hydrogen warhead(Warning do not activate AI after Purchase as sudden movement may make the AI think it is being stolen). Also when it needs repairs the AI will switch from nice blue color to a blood red color. voice of ai will also change from a hot 17 year old British chick,to a 37 year old 800 pound female from America.
there are so many more features, this has been a review by me.
Classic matey, LMAO :-)
