Pioneer releases $2200 USD Blu-ray player

Earlier this year Pioneer promised that they would be releasing the most powerful Blu-ray player ever built by the end of the year and true to their word, the Elite BDP-09FD is now available, at the hefty price of $2,200 USD.

50 pounds? WOW u get a work out taking it home, to obad the PS3 is lighter and cheaper. So spec wise it blows ps3 out the water?

Yeah, no doubt!! Pioneer has a massive head on their shoulders that I'd like to chop off. SCAMS!!!! Good product line but until a couple years ago when I became friends with an employee of them and found out that the only difference between Elite and regular is the boards used internally. 3 boards in the TVs in particular. Not worth the 100% increase in price.

lol spec wise it blows the ps3 out of the water. can it play games and work perfectly with a media server?
im pretty sure if you were to set up 2 hdtvs one with a ps3 and one with this pioneer you would see no difference in playback quality, and even if you did i highly doubt it would be a $1700 difference.

When you spend $2200 on a Blu player alone you want something awesome, although their are way more expensive players, and this delivers.

I believe my parents new plasma has this, separate HDMI connections for audio and video, and until reading this article I never saw a use for it. I would guess separate audio and video channels could give you a "cleaner" output as the audio wouldn't need to be separated from the video before being output to the audio system.

50 lb in weight ? that's almost 23 kg - in other words , it weighs more than a 42 " plasma / LCD TV ? how ridiculous - imagine lugging that back to the shop for repairs...equivalent to a full sized, bulging at the seams suitcase.

Elite BDP-09FD reviews
As some at Afterdawn may have heard, the specs are amazing but not worth the extra $1700, Why the extra cash you ask well its not just a blue-ray play. here i will list the specs of advanced hidden functions within this marvel of a player. the obvious is its mass weight with a built in toaster, microwave, laser Show, pyrotechnics,and a refrigerator. to top it off it has its own built in AI, its purpose is to protect your new purchase with a 1.5 kiloton Hydrogen warhead(Warning do not activate AI after Purchase as sudden movement may make the AI think it is being stolen). Also when it needs repairs the AI will switch from nice blue color to a blood red color. voice of ai will also change from a hot 17 year old British chick,to a 37 year old 800 pound female from America.
there are so many more features, this has been a review by me.

I was always thinking of buying the ps3 but this blows it away. I will be ordering it next year when I have saved enough in my 401K.

Well, (hmmmmm) ....... When "ordinary" (regular) DVDs first came on the market, I, the early-adopter that I was, bought Sony's TOP Flagship Player for a comparatively cheap $1500 Canadian. They didn't even have a new player in the store, just a demo unit running demo discs ALL DAY LONG, so I had to order mine in from the front desk. But $2200 US$ ??? Nah, I'll pass. Man, life is too short for these kinds of prices. (No, I haven't been spoiled by Walmart's $30 dvd player prices). However, it's good to see something concrete in a *superior*, dedicated blu ray unit that isn't, in fact, also a gaming console. Maybe now, we can look forward to economies-of-scale in manufacturing (high number of units manufactured) and the resulting price drops which that entails.
I have to admit though, I have always been impressed with Pioneer Electronics over the years, at least the higher-end versions, and have owned my fair share of Pioneer units. (I currently have one of their PVR's). When they put their mind to it, I have found - and still do - that Pioneer can easily provide the inherent, built-in quality that other manufacturers either can't or won't offer. You can often see this in just their owner manuals alone.
Outside of the specs, this player looks outright *Fabulous!*

If It was a BRD-Recorder too, could begin to see the value. $2200 for a player? That's just bullsh*t. Does it have a HDTV Tuner built in ? no? That's bullsh*t too. How about a Terabyte HD built in to store time-shifted shows and homemovies? Didn't think so. There is no reason a high POS equipment wouldn't have all three. I'll wait for the chinese to crank out my effing dream machine. "Elite" my A$$.

Dunno 'bout that, Hunt.
My anticipation is that it will be a miracle if they can keep up with the demand this model will generate. It's already getting rave reviews, and I suspect that that has a lot more to do with quality and features than the "gosh-wow-gotta-have-this" attitude high-end units like this generate.
Pioneer has always paid attention to detail, and this thing is built like a precision TANK.
It'd be interesting to see if someone could find a posted copy (perhaps in .pdf format) of the owner's manual - which is something I always try to find before I make any important purchases. The manual(s) are generally the final authority and put to rest a lot of nagging questions.

One can buy 8 or 16 GB (& larger) SD cards these days with no problem at all. I can't help but think it might be better to slide in (say) a 16 GB SD card and just leave it there for general downloading use. I expect the built-in 4GB memory is just for convenience.
Also, hopefully, - since this thing is BD-Live compatible - it will have the ability to download future firmware upgrades from (say) a central Pioneer website, as they become available. Not that this machine isn't already loaded with features and format decoders as it is.
Is anything in the blu-ray realm missing from this player that people want to see incorporated IN a blu-disc machine? (Bear in mind, this is not a disc recorder, (time shifting recorder ala VHS), tv tuner or projecter. Gotta keep a perspective here. It's a disc *player*, so in that sense, is there anything missing from this machine?

yep... its missing 2200$ worth of incentive. I'd give it 800 based on those specs. Especially considering for that price any home theater do it yourselfer could provide themselves with soooo much more. It seems geared toward either the rich and lazy .... or the rich and ignorant.
I feel bad for any sales rep that has to push this brick.

ok lets see for that amount we can buy at least 8 or 9 PS3 and have one everywhere in the house including the toilet and still do pretty much the same.
