One giant step backwards.
I restored my system from scratch and installed the correct ASPI layer (still the okay message is greyed out).
Now DVD Shrink crashes while reading the DVD.
I save the clean install with Norton Ghost so I can try again. At least I didn't destroy a blank DVD.
Same error BTW - Scsci Target error.

I?m getting a little overwhelmed - We have far too many people asking too many different questions for me to handle via 1 post to 1 post - Sooo, I?m going to put answers here - Y?all read them and pick out what applies to you -
(Pretty Cool concept if I do say so -)
Here we go -
Frondis - IFO files provide information for DVD player where DVD-Video disc's chapters start, where certain audio tracks are located, etc.
.BUP files are backups for .IFO files and are needed if the .IFO files are corrupt.
Kbodie - First start using RW media until your burns are consistently good, it?ll save discs - When you get a good burn, do a disc to disc copy and move on :D) So far you sound like you?re doing OK -
I also want you to download Decrypter, use that to rip your DVD THEN open it up in Shrink using "Open Files" instead of "Open Disc" -
Sando,
Your problems seems to be with DVD Shrink since you have your trouble while DVD Shrink is encoding -
Have you done the msconfig thing yet ? Did you ever find out how much RAM you had ? Try this last DVD Shrink (out 3 days ago) here it is -
Shrink download - http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video_software/dvd_rippers/dvd_shrink.cfm
Rumast, pcorn, 922588, We need you to check all packet writing programs to see if you have any conflicts -
Next, the reason I suggest shutting down all programs in msconfig is I want to give Nero all the resources I can - Also, I really what you to get decent media - Ritek G04 - Verbatim w/AZO Dye PK OR even without - I have complete faith in them.
I?ve read recently that Memorex has some really some sub-standard media and can?t be trusted. Last, Reduce your writing speed to 2.4 AND double-check to make sure your firmware is up to date.
In case you don?t have it - here is Adaptec ASPI?s URL
http://download.com.com/3000-2098-10161912.html
Should you still have problems, let?s try RecordNow Max - and see how that works - Not to worry, it?s an Excellent program !
Let?s use it until we unravel Nero :-)
RecordNow Max 4.0 30-Day free trial
http://www.stompinc.com/recordnowmax/rnmx-retail.phtml?stp
64026402, 32Deuce - Good !
To everyone - If we continue - don?t forget you CAN uninstall and then Reinstall.

Hi All,
Maybe this info will help to figure out where is the problem:
I had no problems when I used DVD Shrink 3.1.7 B3 but as soon as I updated it to B5, I can't burn automaticaly with Nero anymore.
Also in the B5 preferences, I checked Enable overlaped I/O and Always erase .... compare to B3, not sure if this make any diference.

Rumast, pcorn, 922588, amay AND Alex,
(Hi Ya Alex & amay, didn't see you come in the backdoor - Welcome to the Club :)
Kool little tool here - I'd like for you, all of you, to run this thing and see if you come out all right. I'm not sure what the problem is that plagues us. I haven't used beta 5 yet but I'll give it a try -
NOTE: I don't know about you fellows but, when a new update comes out of a program I use a lot, what I do is select another place for it so that I can "fall back" on the old version if the new one has "Bugs". Right now, for instance, I have 4 different DVD Shrink programs on my desktop - that way I don't get in over my head :-)
At any rate, for the life of me I can't understand the "System Crashes" you're experiences especially when you have all your resources available turning off all in msconfig - I assume that nobody is using their PC when you are backing up your DVD's.
Time to call the troops -
Hey "Doc", herbsman, Jerry - do you have any suggestions for us ?? What am I missing ?{/bold]

This worked thanks.
Ripped the DVD with DVD decryptor
Then resized reauthored it with DVD Shrink.
Took care of the scsi target error and the Aspi issues. Also the 'protection fault' problem. Ripped the dvd that was giving me problems.
Thanks again for your help.

Hi,
I finally got rid of Nero. Thanks for all suggestions given on this thread.
I'm using now DVD Shrink (latest) to rip, ImgTools to convert to ISO and DVD Decrypter to burn DVD.
Already 5 DVD burned with success.
It's amazing ! The guys who develop DVD Shrink, Imgtool and DVD Decrypter are real professional ! My complaints always go to those market leaders who are developping without taking care of the ressources of the PC, thinking that memory and HD are not their problem...

922588,
Glad you're going !
Since Nero didn't work well for you, I have another burning program that will allow you to easily burn CD's, DVD's, Music, Video etc. - it's fast, easy but the bad news (not that bad because it's 2/3rds lower than Nero) it's $ 29.99 - it's called - Copy to DVD.
Don't get me wrong, what you're doing with IMGtool etc. is great but, should you want an all-round burner - look into it - also RecordNow Max -

I truly hope THAT wasn't on your PC when we were trying to fix Nero -
Roxio Easy CD Creator has been known to trash the vast majority of ripping and burning systems -
Nero works fine when not faced with Roxio -

Took long enough for the "Easy CD Creator" link to pop up. Does not play well with other children.
Very happily burning with shrink 3.0 beta 5 & Clone DVD.
Don't remember seeing anything about available HD space.

Seems everyone likes to trash roxio and I won't say they are wrong, but i've had issues with nero without roxio installed it would stall out at the beginning of the burn phase. the same compilation burns quite nicely with copytodvd. Currently have easy cd creator, nero, clone cd, copytodvd all behaving themselves and playing together, like roxio for copying copies runs faster than nero, nero wanted to lock in at 2.4 roxio burns at 4.0

Hi pete,
don't worry. Easy CD Creator has been completly de-installed since long. I knew the story between Nero and ECDC. But I have to admit that ECDC was better to burn CDs than Nero. By the meantime, I reinstalled Windows from scratch (2 times, I think). As my version of ECDC was not able to burn DVD, I didn't reinstall it so I choose Nero.
Now, I'm thinking of testing Linux to Burn (more stable OS)

A few random thoughts. I've never had to install any ASPI, just Nero 6 (at various times I've had InstantCopy 8, NeoDVD, B's Gold, Intervideo DVD Copy, Sonic and RecordNow, and DVDXpress installed and never had to mess with ASPI).
You will have to Decrypt first, but if you have Nero 6 installed just use Recode 2 and forget about Shrink. It's basically the same program and is obviously totally integrated.

Hi Mystice
For personnal reason, I will still use Shrink. It has some very interesting functionnalities that Nero Recode 2 does not have.
Cheers

I must be missing something, other than the built-in decrypting, what does Shrink have that Recode 2 doesn't?

922588,
Sounds Good. You might want to look into "CopyToDVD", it is a pretty good burning program as is RecordNow Max.
I just thought that changing your entire OS was just slightly overkill -
BTW, Be careful when comparing Shrink and recode 2 - there are several large type differences - i.e. Using recode 2 you can re-Author and keep all your functioning menus :-)) A Biggie for those who like to navigate through their backups :D

Hi,
Pete, thanks for the recommendations about CopyToDVD. I will test it as well as RecordNow Max.
Concerning changing OS, I have already a partition running RedHat 9 with some burning tools installed. Resizing it will just be a matter of using a partition manager and to reassign a bigger FileSystem to Linux.
Concerning comparison between Recode 2 and Shrink, I don't need those additional features. what I'm doing with Shrink fits 100% with my needs.
Mystice,
Anyway, Nero as been completly de-installed from my PC, I can say "banned for life" (but who knows). Nero is already not that cheap, but if it requires so much memory and ressources and messing so many DVDs, I can certainly choose something else free that does not eat my DVD like sweets and that does not phagocyte all my PC ressources. Nero Recode 2 while having much more functionnalities than Shrink still miss a very interesting one (ok let me resume it to one).
Cheers and thank you to you both

HI everyone, my system crashes several times with DVD Shrink or Nero recode 2 too but I know why now. It's doing that since I have installed DirectX9 on Win XP Pro. Several fixes are available (ie http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;825116) but this thing is messing up with most programs. Nero is working fine for me even if system aspi is not installed since is using its own aspi layer. My guess is that Direkt X9 forces the system to run faster than it can and an error message related to Windows Minidump appears after rebooting automatically. By the way I had a nice surprise using recode 2, was faster and nicer than Shrink. I love that function that allows you to disable a video replacing it with a picture. I even made my self one very fancy and profesional looking. I say we wait for SP 2 and programs to update themselves well to the demands of DirectX9

hello everyone,
I,m a newbie but I had problems with DVD Shrink 317 crashing too. I unticked the video preview option and the problem disappeared. This made me realise my graphics card was the problem (nVidiaGforce2 mx400) so I downloaded the latest updates, ticked the video preview box again and now everything is working perfectly.

Hi,
Help. I have a toshiba Satellite with 512 mbs of ram and pentium 4 2ghz machine running windows XP, lacie dvd burner. I too have had DVD Shrink crash. I have Nero installed and uninstalled. I have tried copying to an ISO file as well to dvd. My latest attempt to update the aspi 4.71 (adaptec) resulted in my pc to crash and now the laptop screen to go all crazy colored.
Thanks
Marc

DVDshrink is sensitive to video or system stability concerns. Shrink is stable on all my systems now but 2 systems out of my flock had minor bugs that I had to work out. One system was overclocked so I just clocked it normal. The other had a memory glitch and an IDE channel with problems. I have never had a problem on a solid machine.
If you have a freeze during encoding then track it to the hardware or driver with the problem.
Turning off the preview is an easy workaround if it is a video conflict.
