(Stupid Pete, Stupid Pete, ya forgot to enclude the link in your post - why did you even post if you weren't going to put the link in)

Yep, Yep that's where it was, just where I left it, I just forgot to include it -
(Stupid Pete, Stupid Pete, smackin' me head against the wall - perhaps it'll activate some of that dead ol' gray matter - pretty soon I'm gonna forget who I am - )
Sorry Mark -

Pete,
I ran System Mechanic, cleaned my registry and my rip time is around 30 mins for an uncompressed movie. What about defrag my HD? Use system machanic? Will it work for a 200 GB?

If you are using windows XP or 2000 then hit ctrl-alt delete to bring up task manager and go to performance. When ripping are you running 100% cpu?
If you are then you may have a system slowdown(cpu, memory,MB). Check processes to be sure it is all going toward shrinking.
If your not pushing 100% then your bottle neck is the ripping drive or supporting IDE channel/controller.
You can systematically trackdown where the problem is.
I still would like to know the size of the movie.

Yea mkm,
Always defrag - I just use my system tools to defrag all 3 drives, 3 times a week :-)
You might pick up some time by installing an accelerator application - made a difference for me - You really should have 1/2 a Gig of RAM. Less than that, don't bother with the accelerator :-(

Hi Pete'
I have the trial version of System Mechanic and am really starting to like it.
Defragging my RAM was interesting and it seems to work really well for cleaning out the registry.
I'm going to take a peek at your link.
BTW my Sony ROM is taking about 45 seconds to load a disc....time for a new one? It seems to work OK otherwise. I've been looking at a Sony CRX 320. Comparing specs on DVD ROMS is a bit of a challenge, there sure are lots to choose from!!
talk to ya later,
Frank

Pete,
I have a Dell 2.4 GH.
It came with 512 Ram and 40 GB HD.
I added 512 Ram and a Seagate 200 GB HD. I have the 200 set as the primary drive and the 40 as secondary.
I have separate DVD rom and DVD burner, that came with the Dell.
When I first started ripping with DVD Shrink it was taking 7-12 mins. I have ripped and deleted so many DVD's that the slow down must be due to that. I will try and defrag. I am using Windows XP.
Most movies that I backup are just under the limit for a DVD5 uncompressed or I use DVD Shrink to split into 2 disc's.
By the way, how can I add this info to my profile so that it shows up every time in my post's?

Go to the top of the page under "My Account", then select "Edit personal information" and on the page that opens up you'll find a "Signature" box. There you type in all the stuff and it will appear under all your posts.

Hi Mark,
Did your ripping time go up right after you changed your HDs around? I'm just thinking of that 40GB drive as being small but a lot faster than the 200GB.
My rip times have always been in the 20-25 minute range with Shrink. Movies less than 4464 MB rip faster of course.
My VAIO has a 2.53 Ghz CPU 1024 MB RAM and a 105 GB HD. I defrag as much as Pete does, do disc cleanups etc.
Cheers,
Frank

When I had the 40HD as the primary and added the 200HD as the secondary, I had very slow times on the 200HD. I then "ghosted the 40 over to the 200 and made the 200 the primary. I was getting 7-12 min rips on the 200. I have not defraged ever with this machine, which is only a couple of months old. But I have ripped, burned and deleted probably a 100 movies. So tonight I am going to defrag and see if that matters. Plus I have system mechanic now and will use it for my registry.
How do I check with my "Task Manager" my settings? What should they read?

Pete,
I defraged, cut my rip times back down to around 24 mins. Not as good as the 7-12 I used to get but better than the 30 mins I was starting to get.
I am new to the cleaning part of my computer, I don't to delete or disrupt my system. So spell everything for me in detail if you can.
Thanks a lot for all the help.

Mark,
1. If you haven't done it - I suggest that you clean out your registry.
2. Lastly, you can go to Microsoft and install a application accelerator -
Pete
I assume you have checked an have onboard the latest firmware and all of your system's updates. All this helps too.

Hi Mark,
The Glossary on the top bar is often a handy place to look for explanations to words you don't know. Here's what is says for firmware
Quote: Sort of a "operating system of the hardware", an embedded instruction set built-in or flashed into a hardware equipment, such as a router, CDR drive, DVD-ROM drive, washing machine, etc.
Go to this page
http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_all.php
and look for the DVD-drives you have in order to find the newest firmware. To find out which firmware your drive currently has you can use for example DriveInfo, you'll get that handy tool from this page
http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_utility.php
Don't take the patched firmware (if there are any for your drive) unless you really know what you're doing, so just take the newest regular one to begin with.
Hope this helps.

Go to Microsoft - identify your chip - they have tools there for that, and then get the download that is for your individual PC -

You still need to diagnose the slowdown.
Start with crtl-alt-delete to bring up the task manager about five minutes into the rip.
Go to the performance tab and see what % of the proc is being used. If it is 100% your drive is ripping OK but you have a proc that has slowed(hot proc slow down?) or some other system slow down.
If the proc is running low % then the drive or ide channel is having a problem.

Hey there Mark,
I just re-read the thread and I see we haven't sent you a neat tool you should have -
it's called DVD info tool and can test your Discs and Drives -
Why not take it out for a spin around the block -

Hi Guys,
Found a way of making the rips faster.
at first i was getting rips at 6,665 Kb/s and faster (7-12 Minutes a Dvd), but after a month this dropped to 1,945 Kb/s and slower (1 Hr and up)
What i done to solve this:
Right click my computer, Properties, Hardware, Device Manager, and uninstalled all the Ide ATA/ATAPI controllers. Primary, Secondary and any others listed,
Hope this helps as it did for me, and i'm ripping at over 6,000 Kb/s again.
Cheers
Mark.

No, I do it all the time. Here's a shortcut for doing that. It's a regedit.
You can change the IDE channel back to DMA by modifying the registry. Once you've created a .reg file you mearly have to click on it to get out of PIO mode.
1... Go into the register: RUN regedit
2... Find [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E96A-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}\0002]
There a many folders under the CLASS folder. The one you want is about 10-12 folders down It starts the same on all three of my machines at home 4D36E96A . When you open this folder you'll see several folders 0000, 0001, 0002 etc. My folder for the Primary IDE channel is 0001 and secondary channel is 0002. It could be diferent for you.
3.... Highlight these folders one at a time. Do the following for each folder/channel:
4.... CLICK ON File/Export and pick a file name. I saved the file to my desktop. The program automaticaly puts a .reg on the end of the file.
5.... The next time you get errors and suspect your IDEs have been set to PIO just click on the *.reg file you created and the program will re install the correct DMA parameters for the channel. It takes me all of two seconds now.
This is an example ot what a secondaryIDE.reg file looks like.
