My thoughts on using DVD Shrink, after you open disc, click on the main movie title and deselect your un-needed lang. and audio, click on RE-Author and add only the main movie title, this gives you the entire DVD space for the movie. There is a lot less compression applied and the picture quality is near perfect compared to the original. Then to eliminate the questions about good or bad media always burn at 1X. Yeah, I have a 4X Sony burner and I have one player that plays 4X recordings with no problem. However I have two other players that freeze and skip with the 4X recordings. One of those two plays 2X recordings and the last one will only play a 1X recorded DVD. I finally gave in to the whole time issue and just burn everything at 1X now. Problem solved, no more questions about the media for me, I just by whatever is on sale cheap.

As for backing up the main movie title only, that is just your own preferences. I don't have any need for the previews to up coming movies, or trailers, and special features. Just give me the movie at the best quality.

And a great big Howdy there Obewone,

Welcome to our little Club, we're glad to have you aboard !

Your subject is one of my favorites - I love a quality backup but I do like to burn a disc in 13 minutes too -

Not a complete solution as burning with cheap media requires that all of its shortcomings be addressed as you have found out yourself - Please check the bottom and add #1. to your recipe also.

Again, your problems as stated by you are the ones seen when trying to play backups made on cheapo DVD discs.
1. * Cheap media skips, freezes, pixelats, partially jams, won't play, or won't be accepted, and even our old standby, refuses to be recognized. :-(
Inexpensive media is great for text, Data, Spreadsheets, .Jpg and .Gif pictures and is good even for MP3 music BUT for DVD backups - BLAaaaaaT! It SUCKTH in an extremely Big-th way !

2. A good grade media is needed for DVD reproduction !
Ritek G04's or Verbatim are what we're looking for OR any media boasting "Advanced AZO Metal Dye", this indicates a superior dye application, while they are sometimes a bit "pricey" they are acceptable.

Prices online from Meritline.com have gotten Ritek G04 down below a dollar a disc -
Question - If you make coasters out of 3 cheap discs and good copies from 3 Verbatim discs or 3 Ritek G04 discs - which ones then will you say are too expensive ?

Bear in mind, Memorex, Fuji, Sony, TDK, Orange Pack and others are quite good for your MP3 music, picture archives, Spread sheets, Data and your text backups and archives, they just don't work well for DVD backups.
Remember, for DVD backups, purchasing inexpensive media is a gamble, some people win, the majority of people lose, varying amounts but, they still lose :-(

Using good grade media can guarantee you one thing to an absolute certainty, it surely cannot hurt.

STOPGAP FIXES, NOT RECOMMENDED:
1. * There's a little sometimes fix it's to compress your DVD to somewhere around 4.2GB even. For instance when using DVD Shrink, open it and click "Edit", then click "Preferences" on this page we're going to select "DVD Target Size" as custom and set the size as 4200MB By reducing the amount to be burned you can stay away from the edges where the dye tends to be uneven and the discs even may be brittle.

2. You can reduce the numbers of errors while burning cheapo media by burning at a reduced speed. It takes longer but what the heck, you're saving money. Since you're compressing more it might be wise to burn just the movie, the less you burn the better the quality sooo, movie only, please.

A reminder, play your DVD in your DVD-ROM. It's easier for your PC to read the disc and it is much easier on your DVD burner. The constant stopping and starting of your burner required to read a disc could cause overheating and premature wearing out of your DVD R/W drive. Sooo, use your DVD-ROM for reading and your DVD-RW for cooking.

One thing you and I haven't addressed is the life of a backup made on an "el cheapo" disc. Points of fact, inferior discs have a tendency to "Break down" in time. I have had 25 to 30 backups that have refused to play after being stored for a year or more. I test all of my backups when they are burnt to be totally sure that there are no problems. "In olden times," before I knew any better, the Maxell and TDK discs (and any thing that was on sale) was what I used to use before I switched to Ritek and Verbatim, it is the cheap stuff that I have been experiencing trouble with. I noticed that backup DVD's I had been using refused to play in my standalone player and on my PC. VOB files wouldn't play either and other discs that I backed up about the same time would "Jam" part way through the movie. After switching to Verbatim and Ritek s, mostly the Ritek's because the price was right, I've not had 1 go "Flat" in almost 2 years. I still have some backups done on the cheap stuff and as time wears on I lose a few more as I attempt to check them. I say to you, why did a backup play fine in "01"and "02" then "fail" in "03 ?? Some that were done in "01" never made it till "02" and others done about the same time and "Failed" in "04"? All of the backups from "02" and "03", done on the "good Stuff" work fine today - Something to ponder -

And with that statement you'll find that the vast majority of people on this forum are in total agreement with you -

Again, Welcome to the Club -:P)

I purchased Xcopy Express and then Platinum with promises of quality, ease of use and advanced features. The program was usable but madening to use at best.
I was new to the scene.
I spent the weekend checking out the sites for burning. I tested 6 different programs, all of which worked better than Xcopy. I felt sick about the $150 I had spent on 321.

I used 1clickcopy to start but quickly fell for the simple beauty and speed of DVDshrink. All my copies look as good or better than Xcopy and is much easier to do what I want. DVDdecrypter completed the package.
You would have to work pretty hard to make shrink take a long time. Xcopy would take 55 minutes to back up The Big Lebowski complete. DVDshrink/Decryter backed up the same in 40 minutes.(DVDShrink uses both procs in my system as does Recode, but Xcopy does not).
