Ok, when you get to the part where you select the ifo, you will see the file apear in the window next to where you selected it from.Click on it once, then you will see the ADD button become highlighted below it. Click on add. Click on next, and then on the next screen select write. Then all you have to do is leave it for 17 hours :(. Hope this helps.

Oh i forgot to add that it saves the new files to your temp folder in your windows directory, then when its done converting it will automatically write the movie to a dvd-r.

Well i don't know anymore mate, this was my first experience of copying a dvd successfully, so i'm all out of ideas. Are you 100% sure that you've proccessed the correct part of the dvd with IFOedit? And did you rmember to do the Get VTS sectors thing before you tried to open it with instant cd/DVD?

Ok i've tried this method twice now and im sorry to say that i do not recommend any of you to bother with it. On both occassions the quality has been crap, which is a shame. On both occasions i have had 500mb os space left on the DVD so obviously the quality has been turned down too much.
Stube2k,
How has the quality of your dvd's come out?

But the quality you get isn't worth the effort when you use this method, so why bother?

I personally have been unsuccessful at getting a dvd9 to one dvdr. The movie I'm trying to backup is "two can play that game". First off, smartrip & dcryt both freeze around the 4th or 5th vts file. There are 8 total. I forced it to continue and got up to vts7 and it wouldn't go any further. I can't figure out why this B rate movie is giving me such a damn hard time. There are some movies that aren't worth 2 dvds, but even if I were to suck it up and split it, I still can't rip all the files. Anyone have any idea's??? Can I rip x amount of files and then quit and edit? Or do I HAVE to have them all?? The rip where I got up to vts7 won't even burn. Spit out my blank media.
Is the quality different that noticable if you force a dvd9 down to a dvd5??? RMF is right about the media being pricey. I have an HP +r/rw writer and the only media I can get to work on my standalone are the +rw's and a 5-pak set me back $30, so I'm kinda hesistant about what I split or try to fit on one. Damn shame the +r 10-pak was $27, but I can't get'em to work. I'm RAMBLING!!!

phil1191,
I have a DVR-104 so I don't know if this will help, but have you tried ripping only 1 vts_**_*.VOB at a time? that way you can isolate which .VOB is the problem. DVDdcrypter will automatically select the same destination file for each .VOB so you won't have to move them around later.
As far as reencoding, I reencode at 80% or better whenever I can and I can't notice any quality difference. Currently I am reencoding FEAR_AND_LOATHING_IN_LASVEGAS at 78% because I had too, so I'll know if I can stand going any lower.
DVDXCOPY wanted to use 2 discs to backup the movie. Thats my issue with the program, I don't want to use 2 discs if I can just strip out some extra audio and subtitles.

Menmadi, can you point me towards a good guide to encoding with rempg? This instant cd/dvd 17 hour thing isn't worth shit, so i think i'll have to start doing it manually. I need to show my g/f some results soon to justify the money i spent on the burner or i'm out on my ass!! (not really, but i wont be getting any for a while :))Although i did manage to copy from hell last night, but that was a dvd 5, so it was easy.

There is a .txt file that comes with Rempeg when you download it. It helps a little. I figured the rest out by trial and error and a few pointers from some knowledgable people(HomerJ-Neilsue).
Heres a start:
Use 'Bitrate Calculator' in Ifoedit to determine the bitrate or % that you need to reencode. If it's less than 75% I can't promise the quality.
Create a .cffl file list using Ifoedit.
When you fire up Rempeg2, open the .cffl you created, that will read all of your .VOBs
Set your bitrate to the % you got from calc.
If you want the best quality, set 'search' to full.
I set output res to 720x480.
Everything else is usually default.
Click encode and wait.........................
Then remux the resulting .m2v file in Ifoedit.

After you get the files reencoded which just took my machine 29 hours for a two hour movie, You open the relevent .IFO file and click VOB extras, then select remux. It will prompt your for a destination folder and for the .m2v file. Ifoedit will then overwrite the existing .VOB files that it creates using the .m2v file. If you want anything more technical than that you'll have to ask a better man than I.
It's not as bad as it sounds, my machine will multitask(slowly) while I reencode so as long as my wife doesn't TURN OFF THE COMPUTER it's not a big deal.

1.8GHz Pentium 4
80G hard drive
512MB DDR RAM
Windows XP
If you want to sacrifice some quality, you can make it faster, but I didn't buy a 65" HD widescreen tv so I could watch VCR quality movies.

29 hours is way too long for me, there must be a quicker way surely.
How often have you been able to strip down a dvd to the correct size without having to encode it?

Well thats just it, as often as I can I strip out as much as I can to get the movie on one disc without reencoding. You never know, some of the newer films have so much extra bs that the movie itself will fit on one disc.
Some films are so close (4.5G) that its worth the wait instead of splitting to 2 discs for the last 15 min of the movie. While other movies really must be split ie: Lord of the Rings & Phantom Menace.
I'm not sure if the DVD2AVI & Tmpeg route is faster, you'd have to ask someone else.
