On the one hand, I could justify their pricing - a couple of years ago, but since the home MPEG-2 encoder market has opened up so much I don't think it's reasonable now. On the other hand if you consider what it would cost for a comparable hardware encoder (around $3000 last time I looked) it's in line with that. I guess it really comes down to who they're selling it to. If your customers are making DVDs that they make a big profit from it's not hard to justify the price, but that's such a small percentage of the potential market, even for SP, that I think it's short sighted not to lower prices. Eventually somebody is bound to catch up to them in quality, and by that time it may be too late to have competitive prices.

Yes indeed I have no doubts about that. But CCE SP has other major advantages too, for example, the unbelievable speed it manages to encode at!

It is pretty amazing how much faster they are than the competition. I guess that's a result of concentrating on the basics instead of worrying about things like reading MPEG files as input.

I'm certainly hoping so. I'd love it if a completely new encoder showed up and gave everybody a run for their money. Barring that, maybe MainConcept makes some improvements and makes Custom Technology take notice.

They should hand out a few free copies of the CCE SP for all the free advertisement we've been giving the company. I bet they have seen some sales of Basic at least from all the threads on CCE. I pinched myself and woke up... ;D

Ye TMPGEnc, CCE SP and a lot of other programs get a helluva lot of free advertisement from these forums! lol I bet thats why the Basic came out in the first place!
