OUYA shipping on March 28th

article published on 1 March, 2013

Kickstarter superstar OUYA will begin shipping the console on March 28th to backers. The company says the "parts are in the factory and assembly lines are buzzing. We'll gradually ramp up production as we make sure things are working." A full launch is set for June, when the console goes on sale in stores including Target, Best Buy, Amazon and GameStop. Additionally, the company ... [ read the full article ]

I don't have it in my phone. :(

And I think the idea of having a single standardised platform of proven hardware to write for is being lost here. Also the primary focus of the OUYA will be the controller NOT the touch screen... this is what many Android game devs wanted not just techies.

Regardless... I understand you waiting for the OUYA2. It was my decision to get behind the OUYA to help it get going. I believed that the big guys were stagnating... not taking chances. It wasn't about the latest wizzbang graphics for me... just fostering new and creative gameplay. My attitude was that I could easily afford to take a punt... so I did. And if it flops... big deal... we gave it a go.

EDIT: I've discovered that there's a good chance Firefox will be on it... yay:

1. XBMC
2. Cheap/full mini-pc at a fraction of the cost (with the possibility of also running Linux down the line if you want)
3. Netflix/Hulu/etc streaming device for dumb TV's
4. Emulation
5. Android games
6. File Server

This thing does a bunch of crap that many dumber devices that cost $100 do poorly. My only complaint is the cube design...I prefer low profile.

Hey Iggy. There's also the low power aspect. Now you can run your internet radio on a fraction of the power of your PC for instance. Let's hope FF come up with that browser.

Once the community takes off I'm sure there will be plenty of designs for custom hacking the case. Low profile ones. Fancy ones. Ones that incorporate a powered USB hub and a HHD. Nice thing is it won't bugger the warranty.

Yeah...the low power thing is pretty big. I would like to see port replicators for these devices with options like ESATA/USB Hub/sata HD dock/etc. I'm hacking together one for my Minix Neo X5 atm...just waiting for some more parts to come in!

7. VMWare Thin Client
8. CarPC (tho, to be honest...you'd probably need roms that included drivers for common USB things like GPS receivers and FM radio and TV Tuners)

You're really just limited by your imagination on what you can do with these small Android devices.

Minix Neo X5 nice!

I'm not sure that the OUYA will get to do SATA unfortunately... is that incorporated into those A-I-O chipsets? Still I'm certain if the OUYA takes off there may be hacks for SATA AND those specialist device drivers you mentioned... that's the beauty of having a popular, hackable and standardised device. I had a friend phone me today raving about the Raspberry Pi and I'm there saying, "yeah well, that's good... but this thing has the potential to be much bigger imo. And even if there are yearly (yearly?) upgrades there'll be advice as to things you can do with your old OUYA on places- like lifehacker.com to name just one :) It will all tie in the "Maker Movement" hopefully. I have to get onto some electronics courses I can't wait to get up to this sh1t when my little boy gets old enough.

9. Plex
11. OnLive
12. FireFox browser
13. Programmable DIY drone
14. DYI RC device... already with a controller!
15. Robot butler! :D

No developer in there right mind would release AA titles on a console thats open source. the industry as of now seems to be how to maximize profit, reduce ownership rights and stomp out game piracy by whatever crude code (hardware/Software) they decide to spend millions on.

i don't expect any big name games to be on the Ouya, and if i needed a streaming box i could slap 50 dollars worth of computer parts in a box and get that.

I get what you are saying but I do not think this will be it, the Ouya brand might but I do not see this taking over anything.

Besides if I can't hack it and download free stuff on it I can not afford it right now LOL

Copyright infringement is nothing more than civil disobedience to a bad set of laws. Lets renegotiate them.

That's a pretty frequent criticism Dex... and one they claim to deal with.

And plenty of established developers seem keen on it... I really can't be bothered to list them and their reasons... sorry.

It's not gonna be just for emulation Zip. And new game code written especially for it would/could/should be optimised just like on other consoles.
Sadly when I can do everything on the PC and msot games will be on steam theirs nothing worth while about it, when it becomes a real threat to AA gaming and has exclusive titles then maybe around the 2nd one it will be worth wasting time on. Do not get me wrong the PS4Next box are as bad they are just bad in different ways. And Nin is still in la la land.......
steam and other game clients are getting pushed out by microsoft ... that is why so many game companies are working hard on linux clients ( steam for linux has already quite a long list of games that work)and that will help push the success of this platform

Good Luck and Take Care

Ya but if it can not easily bring the DX library of games with it its nothing but a gimmick IMO. MS really needs to let go of DX1-9.x or someone needs to emulate the damn thing. IMO DX is everything in this fight.

Frankly IMO piracy is the least concern expanding the library is everything and getting DX games on it is everything....IMO....

No, do you?

EDIT: Ah I see, there's been a classic overreaction Zip:

Update: Ouya tells us that the console actually will support online multiplayer at launch, contrary to what we heard. "We will definitely be supporting online multiplayer ? developers just need to build in the functionality," a representative said. Ouya PR clarified that online chat, friends lists, and achievements are the items that won't be available until later this year.

It's just a shame that most reporters don't double-check what they copy/paste and won't print a retraction when they get it wrong.
