hi, i have done some reading here but i haven't found any posts that stated a problem similar to mine.

i was backing up some of my dvs last night, they all worked fine, until i tried backing up my dawson's creek 5th season disc 4.

i am using the latest dvd shrink that is available out there...and as i said above, all the other movies worked, but this one.

once i reach 85%, the dvd shrink gives me a message that it can't read the rest of the disc, first message came up saying that there was a read error...cyclic redundancy or something like that. then i tried again, and i got a different message at about 85% again saying something that the dvd being read had some error problems due to encryption security...

has anybody had this issue before? i am starting to wonder if the dvd industry has developed a better security to prevent us from backing up our dvds. am i correct?

thank you in advance.

Make sure that the disc you are trying to rip is clean and free of scratches, fingerprints, etc....
Then try to rip the disc with DVD Decrypter. When it finishes, you can open the rip in DVD Shrink and carry on in normal fashion.
You can follow this guide if you need to......

zippyd...thank you for replying to me.
i installed my decrypter again...and followed the guide you sent me...
i have never used decrypter before...thank you for showing me a different way.

anyhow, i noticed that decrypter stopped at 80% at was having a hard time reading the disc...i could hear also the drive spining and spining...the noise was the faimiliar noise of the drive trying to read the disc...but it just kept on going and the numbers wouldn't go anywhere.

so i guess this disc is screwed up...it is clean...but i noticed that somone has used one of those "clean buffers" or whatever you call it to clean the scrathces of the disc....

but just to make sure with you...so far...the dvd industry they haven't came up with anything fancy yet that DVD Decrypter nor DVD Shrink can't do, right?

thank you again for your help...

There is nothing out yet that DVD Decrypter or DVD Shrink (in combination) cannot handle.

DVD Shrink does not burn (encodes/compresses only) - you are obviously using some other program such as Nero for burning.

thank you for your reply. no for sure i am not using Nero...but maybe alcohol...

but anyhow...this disc that i am trying to back up is probably bad then...because neither DVD Decrypter nor DVD Shrink can read the disc...it stops at 80%. i tried catwoman and it worked fine...but this dawson's creek disc 4 season 5 is not working...weird...

thank you...

I think your disc is a bit messed up. I've noticed that those disc doctor things can remove some scratches but at the same time put more in. Try to get another copy of the disc and see if that works. You could also check ScubaPete's guide (link in my sig) about ripping hard to rip discs.

DVD Shrink doesn't have a burning engine built into the program but.......
DVD Shrink will call up one of three programs to automatically burn your compressed video files.
1) Nero
2) DVD Decrypter
3) Copy To DVD

By default "Enable burning with Nero" is checked in the settings. So unless you choose otherwise, if Nero is installed on your PC, then DVD Shrink is going to burn with Nero.

I use alcohol for internal consumption (in copious quantities).

I use Decrypter or Nero for burning (much more mundane process).
