I have a Vaio Laptop with a dvd burner. I have tried all programs and all methods of burning My DVD's to back them up and i have come to the conclusion that its NOT POSSIBLE.
I uninstalled the Drive, then installed it. Downloaded latest firmware. I can view dvd's and burn Cd's but thats about it. I try to use DVD shrink: (Cyclic redundacy check) error
DVD Decrypter: i/o error
Smart Ripper: file is locked (then i played the dvd with a player, same thing)
i've even tried ISO buster, nothing.
I've tried new dvd's, old dvd's, scratched, unscratched, EVERYTHING.
i just dont think its possible. Could it be the laptop? why can i view dvd's then? i dont get it.
i'm stressing out.

I suppose you could have a bad burner in your laptop, but that's uncommon, especially if it's a new laptop.
CRC errors are usually the result of a bad disc, whether it's scratched or smudged or just plain defective. You say you get this error on every disc you try? I/O errors are also sometimes the result of a bad disc, but it could also be the drive. Do you have access to another computer with a DVD ROM drive? If so try to rip the discs from that. If you don't get any errors, I'd take the laptop in. An external drive would work also to test it out.

Are you sure that you have a DVD burner and not a DVD Combo drive which was quite common with many laptops a year or so ago.
A combo drive will read and play a DVD. It will also read, play and burn a CD. It will not burn a DVD.

Have you been able to rip the movies to your hard drive successfully?
CRC error usually indicates damaged original.
If you can rip to hard drive can you use a program such as Power DVD or Win DVD to view the movie.
What burning program are you attempting to use - Nero?
Need a bit more information here

Huston we've a problem
I. Make sure that your drive is not of those funny combos that read dvd's but writting only cd's. If it is possible to borrow an external cd/dvd burner and attach ot on a 1394 or usb2 adapter it will clarify most of your questions.
II. CRC errors mainly are derived from copy protections and sometimes from defective or dirty discs. If it is the forst case you have to use the appropriate s/w depending on the protection type. Also you can find a lot of s/w detectives which are performing this task. You can find them in www.gamecopyworld.com
III. Try to find out the s/w which is best collaborating with your media and mode to burn. Personaly I've found out that burning .iso images in dl discs the task carries out much more successfully with CloneDVD than Nero, etc...
IV. Did you clarified if your burner accepts only -R or only +R media? This is very common in most cases.
V. did you made all appropriate changes after ripping and before burning in order to use discs in stand alone players?
Good luck!

yeah, I'm pretty sure it's a bad drive. Even if it was a combo drive, you can still rip with it. If you get errors on every disc with every program, I'd call the drive bad.

a defrag is always worth a shot, but I don't think that's the problem here honestly.

i will try a defrag, but the fact that my probems arise when i'm actually rippind the DVDs and not burning them makes me believe i could still burn if i had the correct ISO.
Does anyone have an ISO out there that i could Dwld form to test if i can actually burn it?
i think that would help pin point the problem
Yes, i know.

I think it's your drive. That's the only logical explanation I think.

First of all run Nero INFO tool and see what u have exactly. I get similar errors with decrypter and my girlfriends compaq it says something like i/o fat 32 not supported crc. If u do definately have a dvd burner try using DVD REGION FREE or ANY DVD.

Nero info-tool is a good idea at this point. I also think we then need some more concrete info to go on, for example a simple attempt at ripping via DVD Shrink, with exact error messages...
but until then it looks like the symptoms of a bad drive, or old firmware

you could paste the info from info-tool here. It's a looooong report but it is very detailed and may well have the answers. Of course you may have a duff drive but it's worth checking all the basics..
