Glad you've found the solution. You can just put in your blank DVD-R disc in either your dvd-rom drive or dvd burner, open up DVD Decrypter (it will show you the id code/manufacture on right hand panel), or open up Nero InfoTool, click on the small (disc icon) and it will show you who's the manufacture is as well.

You should be ok with those Sony 08D1's. One thing to watch out for,those 50 pack spindles are made in both taiwan and japan and use that same identical mfg code. Sony also does it on some of their 1x-4x dash media,however they'll even slap in some austrian ones with the same code of Sony04d1 as their taiwanese ones. Very confusing,and a drastic quality difference between those 2 countries.Beware of majority of media made that isn't made in Japan+Singapore. Taiwan makes some good media,but they also make some crappy stuff.
Look on the sony spindle label for a brown logo that looks like an american football for the speed rating. To the right of it it will state: Fabrique au Taiwan or Fabrique au Japan. Usually they are mixed together on the shelf. If you find the ones made in Japan,then they are the better out of the 2 countries.I'll only pick up the sony +1x-8x's in the plus format. Taiyo Yuden manufactures them for sony. Taiwan also makes those +1x-8x's and perform great,but for the same price, I feel better when I get the japanese ones.

I only use Sony Media as my sig suggests and for the most part, they are made in Taiwan.
Just so you know, some people like frog legs and others don't, but everyone will like either of the two, Japan or Taiwan Sony Media. <G>
Just had to do that Saugmon... :)

LOL, i personally only use the Sony DVD+R format MADE IN JAPAN, as they are genuine Taiyo Yuden media YUDEN000T02, but, the FEW sony media 1-8x in either dash or + format that coded out w/ SONY from taiwan have been decent too~ :) if i had a choice, i would naturally buy the TYs over the Sony coded ones in a heartbeat, same price, why not right?, but, that is purely MY OWN opinion~ i have had FLAWLESS backups using the TY made Sonys :)

I'm in the kivory camp on this one. I try to stick exclusively with the Sony +R MIJ's. I've used about 100 so far with no problems. They are on sale this week at Best Buy (as they are usually every 3 or 4 weeks). If you don't see MIJ ones on the shelf make sure you ask as I'm sure they have plenty more in stock. My BB has their restock near Cust. Service and I just grab mine there as the MIJ's are usually gone from the regular display.

Hey kivory666, I'm on my last spindle of those sony +1x-8x yuden000-T02's. I've got a new HP computer and I have to make my own recovery discs in either dvd or cd.I only have 1 shot at this,at least that is what my manual says.
I think I will do it with those sony ty's. I also have plenty of hitachi maxells, sony -1x-8x, and verbatim mcc-003 full hub printables to choose from.God I hope few people do their recovery discs with that cheapo cmag crap! It don't get much more important than that aye?
I'm not impressed with the overall compatability of my new hp 640c lighscribe burner,so I swapped out my original benq 1620 to do my future burning on this new machine.

@saugmon
yes, i just recently did a backup of my entire system...all 250gigs worth with all programs and such on TYG01 media~ used Nero backupitup, btw :) i figured, they were the least expensive out of ALL my discs..and at 30 blanks for the ENTIRE PROCESS...i figure it would be ok~ :)
but, system recovery discs should be of high quality, i mean, like you said, if your system setup is not important, what really is?? hehe
i would stick with those Sonys for your sys. backup, should be smooth as silk...and if your system ever goes kaput (heaven forbid it should anytime soon) at least you will have the confidence of knowing your past data is SECURE and reliable to perform a FULL sys restore~ :) good luck buddy~

Gentlemen, it might be easier to do a full backup by using Norton Ghost 9.0 to either another internal HDD or better yet, and external HDD. It only takes about 15 minutes for a full backup and if you ever want to restore just one folder for example, it would take less then a minute to put it back the way it was. For the whole drive, around 20 minutes maximum on average. I do both, internal at 2 am automatically, and external once a week which I then put it in a fire safe.

if i only HAD norton ghost, then i could use it...i paid for my ultra Nero, so, that is the only thing i had to use at the time...but, very good suggestion nevertheless...don't feel like spending more $$ on software as i have plenty of blank media to last me several lifetimes...
also, i like to put my sys. backup on optical media, as in the past i've had a sys. backup on another hard drive and THAT drive died on me...so, i lost everything...not saying optical media is any better in terms of reliability for storage, but, at least it's a burn ONCE application and i know for sure when on good quality media, it will work when i go to do a sys. restore~ :) just my opinion, nothing factual about my claim at all~
external harddrives are still pretty pricey, i'd rather use 30-40 blank dvds since cost-wise, im saving well over $100~ :) i can be excessive, but, some things i am frugal about. i have a 400gig seagate in my other computer, but that drive stays there...
ok...sorry to go on off topic, but thank you for your suggestion.

@kivory666
It's funny but I had just the opposite with backups on optical. Not that the media was bad, just the data on it while being backed up. Sad thing was I didn?t know it until I tried to do a full restore. Thank goodness it was on my wife?s PC and not mine. <G> As I mentioned in my other post, I backup automatically daily, complete, so even one glitch can be corrected on the spot. This gives me 7 complete backups a week to choose from. I only backup weekly with the external and that is for an extra level of protection, fire or theft for example since it is placed in a permanent fire safe. My other 3 PC's are backed up every month or so as a precaution as well.
If anyone else is interested the software can be gotten for less then $25, an external case for $30 and a HDD for $50 or more depending on size.
Just for kicks, how long does it take you to do a backup of that 250 gig HDD and how often do you do it?
Back on topic, I love my Sony media and also use Nero 6.6 Ultra as my burner software of choice along with Recode2 and AnyDVD. <G>

i've used Ghost a fair few times to rebuild mine and other's various computers, it's fantastic & so simple and quick (when it works lol, which is most of the time unless i'm trying to do a linux dual boot thingy, but then my version is old).
i don't backup system myself as there's nothing on here that i can't get back off DVD, ie utils/patches downloaded and burnt to CD's over time.
as for Sony DVD's have no plans to use/buy any but am always watching all the media threads to keep my knowledge as current as i can

well, it DOES take me a few hours to backup my main 250gig setup, yes, it's a LONG time compared to using ghost; but, i just periodically insert another blank dvd when it prompts me every 1/2 hour or so...i just let it run in the background :)
also, i only backup my system once every few months, i wish i had the freedom to do weekly backups like yourself, but, i don't have the time (and currently the resources) to do it more often :)
i will definitely look into the external HD thing and try to get a copy of norton ghost as both you and creaky advised using it...thanks for the tips~ :)
as for sony DVD-R, they are good media, but i will stick to my sony DVD+R made in japans for now...gotta love my TYs~ :) YUDEN000T02~ :)

the MADE IN JAPAN (Fabrique au Japon)Sony DVD+R 1x-8x are the Taiyo Yudens (at least so far i picked up some more today and they are TYs)...YUDEN000T02
the Sony DVD-R 8x speed if MADE IN JAPAN, so far i have found to be SONY08D1, i have yet to find Taiyo Yuden in Sony packaging regardless of Made in Taiwan or Made in Japan~ :) they are decent discs in my opinion, but, i would go to with the TY discs personally~ good luck~

If your burner is capable of booktyping then go with the +R it is a better format. The -R format is more compatible with older standalones, so that is why it is recommended.
