First off, I hope this already hasn't been posted, but I'm saying it from experience.

When your copying a large dvd movie (Troy for example), you can set the movie's quality down to 59%, check "deep analysis" and check the "sharp" filter...you won't have any noticeable quality issues and the size will be reduced to around half the original at least. I've tested this and 59 seems to be the very limit. Anything around 55 or lower will definitely show some visible artifacts. (If you are forced to use 56,57,58..go ahead. 59 is just to be safe, while the others normally come out ok with most movies. When you reach 49 and below, the movie's quality instant jumps into terrible mode.)

This is after removing the added audio tracks such as foreign languages, director commentary, etc. ( I personally keep the director commentary by compressing the extras to something around 55% or removing them completely)

I agree. You can keep your movie at a good compression rate. When I had a slower PC, I'd try to avoid deep analysis and such at all costs. Movies around 70% turn out fine without them, so I'd shrink the extras like 'behind the scenes' and such because if something were to happen, it wouldn't ruin the (main) movie.

I agree for a normal movie (Gangs of New York was shot because I used 55% - won't do that again) I did South Park (complete first season) at %37, good luck finding other instances where that will work! Troy was a b|^@#.
