Someone please help!! I have been having mucho trouble creating DVD's. Sometimes they work, sometimes not. I either get skipping, "pixylation" or the DVD player just plain stops. Could be at the very beginning, middle or end of flick. I've done my homework, and here are the steps I've taken thus far:

I have a new DELL machine, with a boatload of hard drive and memory

Tried both Recode and Shrink - definitely not a software issue. Same results from both.

Switched from Fuji "-" discs to Memorex "+" discs

Tried multiple DVD players, and even bought a new one that claims to play DVD +R, DVD -R and multiple region codes

Updated my firmware (I have a Sony DW D-56A) Did I use the wrong one?

Tried to make "movie only" back ups as opposed to full disc back ups to use less compression

I really hope someone can help me. I've been at this for over a month, and I'm at the end of my rope.

Thanks all for your time

By the way, I have also defraged my machine!!! And my most recent burn did not work in any DVD player (it messed up in two different places, and many times if it skips, and the DVD is re-wound, it won't skip in the same place.

I'm about to perform another experiment - I'm going to disable my screen saver during the burn process.

Also, I use "CCleaner" frequently, a system/registry cleaner on a regular basis. I also use Spy Doctor frequently as well.

OK peeps, you have all the facts. I am at your mercy...............

Really sorry, what I meant to say in the previous thread was that the DVD did not work in EITHER any of my DVD players NOR my PC!! And if re-wound after a skip, it won't skip in the same place twice!!

You all must think I'm insane.....and you are all correct!! This is really giving me a run for my money, and I sincerely thank all who take the time to help!!

I think the problem is in the media quality and/or burn speed maybe.

Memorex is mostly junk, they don't make their discs they just buy them from manufacturers and put their label on them. They tend to buy some pretty low quality stuff, probably because they get it cheaper.

Fuji's are better usually but not guaranteed to be good.

For high quality I'd go with Verbatum discs with the super AZO Dye.

As far as burn speeds go, it's recommended when doing DVD movies to stay at 4x or less to avoid errors. I've had good and bad results burning at 8x and I think it's just insane to do 16x. But never had a problem at 4x after hundreds of burns.

draven; Do you dekrypt first to your hd. Does shrink analyze the original with no problem. If so, I might suspect a problem with your burner. Switching to memorex is probably no help. If you research the media forum at AD, you'll find that almost nobody likes memorex. I would also try verbatum +. You say you have a new computer, so your burner is most likely burns both + & -.

Hey guys-

Thanx for your quick replies.

I only burn at 4x. Every burn I have ever made has been at 4x.

I do use Decrypt to put the DVD on the hard drive. Legend has it it's the best. I then use shrink and/or Nero recode (always Nero to burn) I also invested in the newest Nero 6 Ultra

My burner does support both + and -, so I will try the Verbatims. Should I go + or -? And what is super AZO Dye?

Thanks squizzle & wbfconst for the tips!!

Hey, thanx for the reply. Yes, I just double checked and that is the one I used. Should I re-install it?

draven, generally -R is more compatible with DVD players than +R, but most newer DVD players (like within the last couple years or so) should have no problems with either format. Some burners are able to "booktype" +R discs which makes them look like DVD-ROM to DVD players, thus making them virtually 100% compatible. This feature is not available for -R discs and is only available for some burners and with some software.

Super AZO dye, it should say it right on the packaging, it's something they like to boast.

I would change the media first.
Try verbatim+,TY,Ritek or Sony.
I had the pixelation problem and skipping with cheaper media.
