Hi, I'm new to the burning thing, I downloaded DVD Shrink and used it without a problem about 5 times. Now everytime i try to use it an error comes up and it can't back up the movie. The error reads:

DVD Shrink encountered an error and cannot continue
Failed to read file "D:\"
Data error (cyclic redundancy check).

If anyone knows what this could be or how to fix it I will appreciate the help. Thanks.

What movies is this happening to you on? As borhan9 said it could be a scratched/smudge/bad press.
Have you tried DVD Decrypter to rip these movies?

If it is indeed a scratch I have used brasso with great success to "buff" the damage down enough that the laser will read the disk. Use as directed on the bottle wiping from center to edge NOT in a circular motion. This will scratch the disk slightly as Brasso is abrasive but it will be perfectly readable. Also note that I got this same error on some newer movies with latest copy protection I think that I got it with Hitch and Are we there yet? but 75% it is a scratch or other physical damage.

Are you getting this with multiple movies or only one in specific? Does the movie get read at all; if you get this error with absolutely no processing it may well be the copy protection. The odds of a scratch at the very beginning stopping any reading/analysis at all is slim to none usually the scratches are at least part way into the movie. (usually!)

All of the above is simply an opinion; it may be right on or way off but it may allow you to consider certain factors and do a more logical deduction of what may or may not be the source of your troubles.

Hope it helps, Later

@TIGERUK

Why don't you just use DVD Decrypter or DVDFabDecrypter to rip to your hard drive and then Shrink to your single layer disk? Both rippers will handle Sony protection and they are free. Also as far as I know when I tried DVD FabExpress it will encode and compress your disk to fit a single layer you just have to check it in the settings.

You will get this message when the disc is damaged or dirty.
Use a proprietry disc restore fluid then polish with a good disc cleaner, this has worked for me 75% of the time to read bad discs.
Also try to rip using IsoBuster,it may take many hours but you will get a working image file from it.
DVD Decrypter is also good, set the I/O error retry to 0 (disable) or it will take forever on a really bad disc.

Good luck fellow ripper !

Thank you for all the replies. I was trying to copy the movies closer and xxx: state of the union, I tried DVD Decrypter and dvd fab express but they didn't work either, so I guess the dvd's were scratched really bad for all three of them not to work. I guess I will try to clean them really good and try again.
Thank you again.

stealj,
Both of the movies that you've mentioned have given other people problems. If you do a search for each of those movie titles you'll find several threads discussing them. Closer and XXX State of the Union have the newer Sony Copy protections although some say they've had no trouble others say that they have. Try the free trial version of Slysoft's AnyDVD in the settings go to program tab and chck "run in safe mode" I love this product but have had it conflict with a few programs like DVD43 and Nero but safe mode seems to have fixed it no trouble for months.

Make sure your dvd's are clean. Smudges or fingerprints can make your copying inoperable. Use ordinary rubbing alchol to clean discs.
