Hi,
What I need to do is figure out a way to make my existing DVD back-ups more compatable with DVD players. My back-ups only play on my PS2 or computer. Very few stand-alone DVD players will read them. Some of my original DVD movies have become damaged or lost, so I'm trying to figure out a way to re-encode/reburn my back-ups to be more compatable. These back-ups were made using DVD Shrink xx - 3.2 with DVD43 running in background. The menus and special features have been removed leaving only main movie with little or no compression. They're burned with Nero v5 on a Sony DRU-500a at 4x using dvd+r discs. Would dvd-r discs or slower burn speeds or re-coding or burning with different software make for a more compatable dvd movie back-up (of my existing back-ups)? What is the most compatable way to backup original dvd movies (on one disc)(high quality) from here out?
Thanks
Insaying
BTW: The backups were encoded "region free". Can they be re-encoded "region x" and would it make a difference?

first the reigion free should be fine
your burning speed is fine 4X is perfect
what blank media are you using?
if your using DVD plus R try booktyping them the DVD-ROM in nero that should help make them compatable with all standalone players or just try DVD dash R and see if that works
you could try some different programs ,iam using CloneDVD2 with anydvd it a great combo and you can download both as a free trial before you buy and if you decide to buy type in "afterdawn" and save 10 bucks on the combo making it 49 dollars making it a great deal.
the problem is most likly your media stick with the good stuff
Taiyo Yuden or Verbatium is the best out there. pick up either or
heres some gudies on how to use CloneDVD2 with anydvd if you decide to go with it

What do you mean by "booktyping" with Nero? I'm looking at it now and dont see how I could make my DVD+R say DVD-R. ATM I'm using HP DVD+R 4X. I'm sure all my back-ups are on DVD+R's and think some are Verbatium brand. Nero version 5.5.9.24 OEM.

If that's what you meant...
Or did you mean instead of making "DVD-Video" compilation, use "DVD-ROM (ISO)" and just create AUDIO_TS - VIDEO_TS folders?

you can booktype your DVD plus R to DVD-ROM in Nero yes
when your in Nero getting ready to burn click the options box and you will see a dropdown box click it and set it to DVD-ROM as i said with the DVD plus media only.
the HP blank media usally isnt that good .Whats it code out as? stick with the Taiyo Yuden or verbatium as i said burning at 4X max.

Good advice from aabbccdd. Dvd-rom is the most compatable format and will more than likely solve your incompatability problems with your set top dvd player.

Just a followup question to your reply to Insaying regarding dvd-rom. Everything I burn is DVD-R. I started with this and have not had any problems so not sure if I should change anything at all, but I curious about some of the replies. I assume that if you booktype a DVD+R, it makes a player think that it is a DVD-ROM. Is this correct? I also think I understand that you don't booktype DVD-R's because there is no reason to do so. Wrong or right? I mainly (90% of the time) use AnyDVD and CloneDVD2 and things are just fine. I'm always trying to learn new ways to burn (just in case), but was curious about the booktype step. Thanks.

I use DVD Shrink in combination with AnyDVD and top it off with Nero burning rom (producing 100% quality copys), using a varitey of different brand DVD+R's. This combo has been I'd say about 95% effective for me with the exeption of a maybe a handful of DVD's and a generic brand of media I used once (I don't know what I was thinking when I bought those).
But my humble guess is its not necessarily that the process your using is wrong, but the DVD player your using is not compatable.
Not to hype another site or anything, but videohelp.com has an extensive list for dvd players and what they can and can't play.
I also have found that the cheaper players seem to be more compatable with DVD-/+R's than the more expensive ones

@tssquare43,
Quote: I assume that if you booktype a DVD+R, it makes a player think that it is a DVD-ROM. Is this correct?
That is exactly right.
Quote: I also think I understand that you don't booktype DVD-R's because there is no reason to do so. Wrong or right?
First of all you can not booktype DVD-R media to dvd-rom because the booktype field is already written as a DVD-R where with DVD+R the booktype field is left blank. There has been talk about a work around that enables you to booktype DVD-R to dvd-rom but it is not true dvd-rom because it writes the dvd-rom booktype to a different part of the dvd than the booktype field. It is not proven and doesn't work as it is and does with DVD+R. Dvd-rom is still the most compatable format and will work with more dvd stand alone players than DVD-R. Dvd-rom is most compatable followed by DVD-R then DVD+R.
Dvd+r IMO has the advantage over DVD-R since it can easily be booktyped to dvd-rom therefor being the most compatabible considering that your dvdrw is bitsetting compatable, which most are anymore with exception to pioneers.
If you pass your backups around to family and friends dvd+r's booktyped dvd-rom is definately the way to go. There are still some finicky stand-alone dvd players out there that won't play dvd-r's but will more than likely play a DVD+R booktyped dvd-rom.
So to answer your question, wrong but dvd-r's will work ok for a majority of the people. Main thing is always use good, proven, high quality media. You can also have playback issues with dvd+r's booktyped dvd-rom on poor quality media just like with dvd-r's.

Hi,
aabbccdd is dead right regarding the discs to use. (Verbatim & Taiyo Yuden are tops) also Ritek & Ridisc. I had the same problem - discs play o/k in computer and PS2 but not in my PIONEER DV565A,I paid £250 for it ,if I new then what I know now I would never have . The solution is simple - buy a dirt cheap (£30 - £40 ) dvd player cos these will play almost anything. If and when it goes phut!buy another one!

Very detailed answer. It will probably be a while before I try the booktype action -- I have 3 50-packs of verbatim -R's (thanks to creaky, et al,)and 2 50-packs of Maxell gold top -R's before I need any more media.

tsquare43,
You're very welcome. Just out of curiosity, what make and model dvdrw do you have?

Cool, you'll need to flash it with some modified or bigdog f/w in order to bitset unless you've already done so.

Well, I finally found where the "booktype" option is in DVD Shrink 3.2, but, it's defaulted "on" and cannot be unchecked. So, all of my backups Are already booktyped to dvd-rom yet remain uncompatable with almost all, but a very few, dvd players I've tried.
However, I've re-extracted some of my backups to my hd using DVD Shrink creating hdd files/folders instead of auto burning with Nero. Then I've been re-burning them in Nero as "dvd-rom iso" and all have been completely perfectly compatable with one dvd player tested.
If I burn as dvd-video with Nero they're not compatable. I'm guessing this must be the format DVD Shrink 3.2 has been using for auto-burn that I cannot seem to change. As far as disc media goes, I dunno, seeing as I've gotten them to work. Kind of a pain, tho.
