hello. i have this problem that i just can't figure out and i was wondering if anyone has come across the same issue...and perhaps a solution.
i have various audio/video programs and tools installed...to name a few: dvd shrink, dvd decrypter, various codecs, windows media, winamp, powerdvd, etc...and whenever a audio/video program opens, i have a horrible annoying alarm that sounds through the desktop speakers until the program is closed.
at first i thought it might be an add-on program attached to a codec pack that has to do with a/v sync...but i still cannot figure which it might be...
anyways....if anyone has any suggestions, your help will be greatly appreciated. thanks

Have u tried to look into ur sys sound schemes as in ur defalts sounds.
It mayb the fact that u have alocated a sound file with the opening or loading of a disc...
Do u have any access to the settings or prefrences of the program that loads and makes the sound... There u can find the path of the file and once found u can isolate and or delete or turn off the sound...
Just a few suggestions...

borhan...thanks for the reply
to be honest, i have no idea what program is creating the sound. it just seems to come on with the load of any program that has to do with dvd authoring and/or video/sound, most repeatidly with DVD Shrink and DVD Decrypter. my thoughts are that a secondary program installed with a codec pack (such as nimo or tsunami) might be creating the sound having to do with a audio/video sync problem.
unfortunatly this is only a guess...and i have yet to narrow it down to one specific program. thanks again for replying.

nah...nothing.
the alarm is not a short audio clip that plays a sound and then stops...it is a repeating sound, fairly similar to an ambulance siren. it continues to play until the system is restarted.

i just tried deleting all codecs from my computer. unfortunatly i need them all...so they might be interacting negatively between themselves or even with some of my current hardware. not even sure if it is the codecs...alas!

You could try this I guess.
Open Windows task manager and see what programs are running by going to Ctrl/Alt/Del ->Processes.
Click on "User Name to sort the processes.
End process on everything under your User Name but explorer.exe and taskmgr.exe. Don't disable LOCAL SERVICE, NETWORK SERVICE or SYSTEM processes.
Close Task Manager and open Shrink. See if the noise still occurs.
You might get lucky and disable the noise. If so you should be able to figure out which process is causing it... If that is what the problem is.
Rebooting will restore all the disabled apps.
Can you restore Windows back to a time before this problem occured?
